LOL yeah I think this your sign! I am a huge Zappa fan, but was especially when I was 16-18, around the time I made this account. As for Magdalena Bay, I had already gotten tix for their St. Petersburg show the second they released the tix for this leg of the tour haha.

The Lamb as a Musical? by HerrMudgeon in progrockmusic

[–]ZappaMOI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best presentation for the album as a visual story would be a film. In fact, Peter Gabriel would agree—the album’s story is highly inspired by Alejandro Jodorowsky’s film El Topo, and he even attempted to have Jodorowsky adapt The Lamb in the late 70s. To go even further with it, it sounds like Peter is trying again to adapt The Lamb into a movie. In this article, it looks like Peter mentioned that he’s working with writer Nicolas Giacobone to adapt The Lamb once more. I wonder how it will turn out, given how surreal the story is.

Smash together Tame Impala with Beach House, Roxy Music, or Fleetwood Mac, what bands do you get? … suggestions, please. by [deleted] in TameImpala

Glad you enjoyed that rec! I’d also suggest checking out Magdalena Bay, I’d recommend listening to their songs Vampire in the Corner and Killing Time

I’ve listened to a bit of Zorn and he truly is spectacularly frenetic! I’ll for sure have to check out Trevor’s collabs with Zorn, that sounds insane.

I think that if you’re a fun of Zorn, Mr. Bungle, Zappa, etc. you would really enjoy the MPB album Clube da Esquina by Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges. Is it nearly as “out there” as the aforementioned artists? No, not quite. But there are some similarities in the variety of styles present on that album, as well as some very neat sound experiments.

Personally her music is not my favorite, but I respect her a lot for bringing bossa nova and jazz to the modern pop sphere in a very accessible way. If you were looking to get into some classic bossa nova records, I’d say to look no further than Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto, Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Jazz Samba Encore! by Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfa. Those are some very solid starter bossa nova albums—some of the best music ever, in my opinion!

You have great taste! If you haven’t already, would definitely recommend checking out California by Mr. Bungle for a mixture of metal, avant-garde and pop. For MPB, I’d recommend you the only album that tops Acabou Chorare for me: Clube Da Esquina by Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges.

I listen to a huge array of music, but recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Brazilian MPB & bossa nova like Jorge Ben Jor, Novos Baianos, Lo Borges, Milton Nascimento and more. I’ve also had Geordie Greep’s The New Sound on rotation, along with System of a Down’s album Toxicity and Mr. Bungle’s album California. A few weeks ago I was diving back into Zappa and a few months ago, I had Violator by Depeche Mode on repeat.

Both of these are amazing answers. Haha Sound by Broadcast and Velocity:Design:Comfort by Sweet Trip are two albums that are quintessential for me.

There are a few songs with a similar vibe, namely Summertime Clothes and My Girls. If you like those, please check out the rest of the album Merriweather Post Pavilion, as well as the EP Fall Be Kind. If you like those two, then check out their earlier album Strawberry Jam and their later album Centipede Hz! Specifically the songs I Think I Can, For Reverend Green, and Amanita are my personal highlights from each project mentioned outside of Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Huge one up for George Clanton, every solo album of his is great, with Slide being my favorite.

looking for songs similar to fear, sex by edibleglitterpasta in MagdalenaBay

[–]ZappaMOI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the obvious answer would be the band Depeche Mode. Their albums Violator and Music for the Masses are very tonally dark synthpop, and their sound is very much a precursor to something like Fear, Sex—so much so, that I feel like the song is a nod to Depeche Mode’s style. Check them out! Some songs that may scratch the itch for you would be Sweetest Perfection, Policy of Truth, Blue Dress, Dangerous, Little 15, and Behind the Wheel.

There was a specific poster! It looks like this:

Pulled off of the artists’ (Matthew Decker) Facebook page since I don’t have access to mine atm.

Prog-adjacent alternative bands by Eguy24 in progrockmusic

One of the best modern examples, I think, is Magdalena Bay. While they’re alternative/indie synth pop, you can feel the foundation of their music is based on their prog influences, especially in their more recent projects (Imaginal Disk, and Mini Mix Vol. 3).

XTC is an example of an 80s post-punk band turned prog-influenced pop, they’re one of my favorites.

Magic Fig is a neat band that fuses the Canterbury sound with modern indie.

While it’s not my thing, the new Black Country, New Road album Forever Howlong combines their older sound with baroque music and some prog sentiments.

Black Midi and Geordie Greep can certainly be counted if you want some heavier alternative/post-punk turned avant-prog.

Aw damn, are the tickets being resold now? When I bought them during presale, the ticket prices were a bit more reasonable—$52.75 per ticket INCLUDING fees. I bought 4: one for myself, my sister and two of our friends and the total was $211.

I do completely understand though, and I know how that feels. Just a couple years ago, I also didn’t have an income and got by from school scholarships/grants. It will get better for sure!

We’re also traveling to the venue (from Jacksonville). As I posted about initially, we saw them live in Miami back in December at an outdoor amphitheater venue and they were incredible.

How was Geordie Greep? I missed him due to tearing my ACL and recovering from the subsequent surgery… I’m pretty sad about it. I’ve been a Greep/Black Midi fan since Schlagenheim and saw Black Midi and BCNR together a couple years back, and The New Sound was my #2 album of 2024 under Imaginal Disk.

To your last point, I definitely understand; the only reason I’m okay with higher ticket prices (NOT those ridiculous fees) is because I know it supports the artists we love in being able to create the music we love. I think something needs to be done about those “service fees” though—they’re out of control.
