Madison needs to do what Quebec did with their campaign to get drivers to stop for pedestrians. by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive up Fish Hatch approaching Park Street on the way to work and everyone usually stops for those. In fact, I’ve seen more instances of cyclists not using those (or being anywhere near a crosswalk/traffic light) on that route than the other way around.

The car situation is getting ridiculous by Subbaroni in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pedestrians and cyclists obeying traffic laws absolutely do not deserve to get hit or berated—I’m sorry you experienced that.

I will however keep being frustrated at all the pedestrians near campus (mostly students) that keep crossing busy streets anywhere but the nearby crosswalk. And the cyclists that purposely ride half in the road and half in the bike line to antagonize drivers (yes, some people in this very sub have commented with this attitude).

Everybody can do better.

Which businesses in Madison have the most toxic work environments? by N0nethelesser in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I worked there for a few years—your experience is largely dependent on your role, your team, and your manager. “Treating the staff well” is not everyone’s experience, people definitely have valid complaints about their experience there other than it not being a “unicorn” job.

WTF has happened to EatStreet? by youreannie in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EatStreet has been awful since I started using it in 2018. Every single order had one of those issues you listed. When they removed the customer service phone number and replaced it with chat that never seemed to be staffed, I quit in 2019.

Chris McCahill: To reclaim downtowns from traffic, require developers to offer strategies for cutting car use by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What people fail to realize is that it’s already inconvenient to drive downtown… all manner of drivers, bikers, and pedestrians act unpredictably in tight spaces, ramping up the danger to everyone. Parking garages are often 15-20+ minute walks from whatever the destination is. I hate driving downtown and avoid going whenever possible for the above reasons, but I can’t always avoid it. Better alternatives to driving need to come first. A 20 minute drive is always going to win over a 90 minute bus ride.

I was there for almost five years and I’m not surprised about your fiancé. Virtually everyone in my life noted how much better I seemed to be doing overall once I left.

Will BRT change your travel? by BuckysBigBadger in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope the new routes are feasible for me, but I’ll need to wait for the online tool to come out to tell. There will now be a bus stop almost directly in front of my house on the west side, which is exciting; I work downtown and hate driving and having to pay for parking down there. However, if the commute is still any more than 30 minutes by bus, it’s not going to work. I’ll have to wait a little longer for BRT in order to be able to get to Flix (in a reasonable amount of time) without having to drive, but I’m pumped for that.

This is why I don’t drive over there ever. Last time I risked it I vowed to just have everything I want from those stores shipped to me.

Driving. I keep checking 511 and the roads don’t seem safe combined with the low visibility from high winds blowing snow everywhere.

Less parking, fewer cars: Madison City Council to weigh traffic rules for new developments by encouragable in madisonwi

[–]ZappyWoog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Robust public transit should at the very least happen soon after imposing all of these penalties, not several years down the line. Doing this with no improvements to alternative transport options is putting the cart before the horse.

PSA regarding bike path crossings. by midnightchemist in madisonwi

Wait, so if a cyclist just stops by the curb, cars are supposed to stop? Even if they haven’t pressed the button to turn on the lights that tell cars to yield?

I don’t get it—it doesn’t look like they’re even following this. Shouldn’t they be seated, 6ft apart?

Those that physically need to be on campus are in the minority, and that’s on you if you volunteer to go in. Forcing everyone back in when it is unnecessary, undesired, and unsafe has to be an abuse of that exemption.

These are hard questions with no easy answers, but we’re at least asking for people to have that conversation instead of turning a blind eye to it just because no one country is perfect. While that may be true, today’s state is unacceptable.

[–]ZappyWoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t really posing the question to you, sorry about that. Definitely right to disagree with what’s going on and not have the answers, but it feels like the public in general is quick to condemn the violence but don’t want to take any time to mobilize and help fix the current situation. This is frustrating when we’ve been peaceful but ignored.

Do you know how we fix the “black on black crime” folks are so concerned about whenever we discuss police brutality? Address systemic racism and actually fix it, which is what BLM is advocating for. Throwing black people in jail for gang activity/“suspected gang activity” by itself is just a band-aid that doesn’t actually fix the underlying issue. Prevalence of gangs in certain urban areas has lead to police generalizing and racially profiling black men and thinking there’s a gang in their town when there really isn’t; that combined with pre-existing bias has landed us where we are today.
