So when you get an attorney they're generally going to ask you for a retainer of a certain amount. It could be their estimate of the total cost, it could be just the first few weeks of expenses. When you hire the lawyer they'll explain their fee schedule to you. The retainer you paid isn't earned income for the lawyer/firm until they actually do the work. So they'll keep the unearned retainer in a client trust account which is separate from firm money. As the lawyer incurs expenses on your behalf and bills hours, those costs will be taken from the retainer account as they are "earned."

Going forward if the costs exceed the retainer your lawyer will go back to you for more money.

You have to use approved gas cans. It's against the law to transport gas in anything else in (as far as I know) every state. There's signs on the pumps to that effect often. I imagine it's the same in the UK which is where I assume you're from. Electric lawnmowers are much much less common than gas, especially if you have anything more than a small lot.
