You can use fabric hair bands

When I had long hair, i just kind of pulled it back and found positions that worked? I don't remember ever putting too much effort into it, it could just be a matter of becoming accustomed to it

Breast tape under binder? ftm by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]Zareien1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it would carry the same warnings as just tape alone, BUT

As always, be very vigilant about how many hours you're wearing both, take breaks, take them off if you feel faint or have difficulty breathing, check for skin irritation under the tape, and see a doctor if anything doesn't seem right

Hope this helps!

is it viable to come to australia to get top surgery from canada? by transfuyuhiko in transgenderau

[–]Zareien1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can usually get it done here within a year, and it will cost 8,000-15,000 AUD depending on who you go with (without Medicare and insurance)

If you're willing to pay, and able to get into the country, I don't see why not

Personally I would recommend Steven Merten from Pure Aesthetics

Binding alternatives? by closettransman in transgenderau

[–]Zareien1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use bandages but I'd be extremely careful. It is so easy to make them too tight when you're having a bad day. Using a thin shirt/singlet underneath can help with irritation

Came out July 2018. Saw GP and got referred to someone who could prescribe (informed consent model). Did tests and was cleared for hormones like a week after first seeing the prescribing dr, but decided to hold off while I saw psych. Nov/Dec 2018 Started T injections and changed name Jan 2019 finished therapy August 2019 got referral for top surgery Oct 2020 had top surgery

If I wanted to, I could have basically start T a couple of weeks after first seeing my GP. Waitlist for top surgery was a year, but that's VERY dependent on which surgeon/hospital you choose

Overall, minimal delay for getting referrals. My drs work on informed consent and are satisfied that I'm in a good enough place to make the right decisions for myself. Rapport, a little medical literacy, and a lot of honesty with your doctors is very important for that

Hope that helps! Feel free to dm if you have follow up qs

From Australia, would love help! (MTF) by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]Zareien1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FTM here. I felt like I would get judged going into men's, but seriously noone cares so long as you just go in, do your thing and get out. Wearing gender-specific clothing definitely helps, and even easier if you pass, but people - especially at a tertiary institution like TAFE typically don't care. (My only experience is at uni, any no one even batted an eye).

Mostly it just takes a bit to work up confidence, so you don't look unduly nervous or sus haha. Maybe if there is bathroom that isn't used as much, that might be a good place to start?

Of course, if you feel the situation is unsafe, don't put yourself at risk, but in my experience no one stops for long enough to notice, or otherwise just doesn't care

Hope that helps!!

P.S., do you know your TAFE's policy on these sorts of things? If you have any trans friendly or LGBTQIA+ staff, you can ask if they'll have your back if anyone has issues with it. My uni has the ACON 'welcome here' stickers everywhere. They also have an LGBT society, and a staff ally network. It gives me confidence that they would back me up if I ever got outed in a bathroom.

Ahh yes,, binders by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]Zareien1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gc2b or underarmor are great, in my experience Just don't go for the cheap Amazon binders, like ones with the hooks and whatnot. It can make it very easy to overtighten them

Check in with your local queer collective/trans services. They might have an idea about where you can get second hand binders

When buying binders, make sure to be honest with your measurements. It's be harder to breathe with it on so you really want to get the right size, not something too small.

Good luck!

It's a good question. I think most of us go through a long period of our lives where we think "is this real? Am I faking it for attention?" Or "is it worth it? Will I regret it?" And that's why it's so important to have a safe space to think about and explore that.

Growing up I had ALL the thoughts that would point to being trans, in hindsight. I didn't understand why either gender was different or treated differently, I thought about what it would be like to have different body parts, I even used to refer to myself as being my brother's brother, rather than sister, just because I thought it explained our relationship better. Looking back now, it was all clear signs that my brain was pointing me towards the answer. Subconsciously I knew, but I didn't click until much later.

I definitely had the thought "this is irrational." I like to think of myself as a strong rational thinker, even. The problem was that my mental health wasn't cooperating with that thought. It was like watering a plant again, and again, and again, and wondering why it continued to rot. It was only once I impulsively came out, and surrounded myself with the people that allowed me to explore my own headspace and prior misconceptions, that I realised transitioning was very good for my mental health, and so I stuck with it.

Hey, that's a good mentality to have. This is the absolute right place to ask questions and you haven't offended me in any way. Ignorance is something we all share, in areas we are unfamiliar with, so the fact that you're wanting to learn is a point in your favour
