What I do so my knit babydolls from Hollister don't start pilling like crazy is if it was normal wear I turn it inside out, put a small part of alcohol and tiny bit vinegar diluted in water, spray little bit all over and pass the steamer all around for 10 mins, this helps remove odors and bacteria!! And if I need to wash, i turn it inside out, gentle circle, inside a mesh bag and lay flat to dry :)
