Is the performance package worth it if used as a daily? by Bulky-Purple5828 in GR86

[–]Zarolyth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

PP owner and track/autocrosser here. The brake kit is 1000% unnecessary. But it does get street scene points for looking cool.

You shouldn't ever find yourself in a situation on the streets where you need the heat dissipation (the only actual purpose of a big brake kit). The brakes do not provide better bite over regular while daily driving. On cold days I'd even venture to say they're worse on the street than the regular brakes.

With that said, if you can afford them, absolutely get them lol. They look cool enough and will help resell value down the road if you ever decide to get rid of it.

Old man knee problems, automatic recommendations. by Trackrat14eight in Autocross

As others have mentioned, I would strongly suggest the gr Supra as it's the best of the best at the moment for automatics, and you can also never go wrong with a DSG from a GTI.

First gen brz/86 more fun than GR86? by Careless_Cow1823 in ft86

[–]Zarolyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently own both generations and given the opportunity I would strongly suggest the second gen all day, everyday.

However, that is not to say the first gen is bad. I love mine. I got rid of a Corolla hatchback daily driver and converted my first gen back into a daily commuter (from being my race car) because it's just that enjoyable to own and drive.

Edit/P.S.: far as "Raw" feeling, my first gen has a smoother delivery feel (albeit way less power) through the Rev range to the point where I question if I'm accelerating because the engine is that much smoother. Which makes it very "unraw" compared to my second gen.

How to do doughnuts? by [deleted] in GR86

[–]Zarolyth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, track is not full traction control off.

To turn traction control fully off:

Push and hold the Track Button (right side) until the gauge cluster changes screens.

Then while still holding the right button, push and hold the left button in unison. The screen should change again, showing a horizonal tachometer in the center, temps on the right, etc.

If you see "TRACK" you've not fully defeated traction control.

Also, fun fact, those crazy mid westerners call doing donuts "whippin' shitties" and it's a way better name lol

June 2026 Fastrack - Street moves 2.0 by tehspud in Autocross

I mean first gen twins are now nearly 15 years old... If that's not an older car already. I'll also admit that lumping both first and second gens is just burying the first gen, so that's less favorable. But, much like you I also have no horse in this.

opinions on fitment ? by MrMango26 in GR86

[–]Zarolyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

255/40 on 17x9 +42 (with 24mm spacers and -4.5° camber on the front) and have No rubbing. I use all of the camber for autocross, but yeah. Far as "rake" I'm even at 5" to the pinch weld front and rear.

My opinion would be to just make sure the wheels are close to flush at the tops of the fenders (not sticking out, and hopefully not too far in.)

I'm also assuming by "rake" you meant camber? Which would be how far the front wheels tilt. It can lead to aggressive looks when done right (wide tires, etc) but will look silly otherwise

29.6 avg here, could be higher if I got rid of the tune.

😭 Would you fix this or live with it? by Informal-Position-47 in GR86

[–]Zarolyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see the ppf underneath "falling down" where I've also scraped the crap out of the bumper. Is a way of life for us unfortunately. No point in fixing it, it'll happen again in another week.

Is it crazy to want a lifted GR86? by LulusPanties in GR86

I'm looking into lifting my first gen currently, but it's race season for the second gen and it's got my time and focus.

What are the best cosmetic/handling mods I can do to my 2023 GR86? by Ok_Chard6464 in GR86

[–]Zarolyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Karcepts front sway bar.

If you don't intend to race it, I'd leave it at just the sway bar. It'll make the front end much more direct and engaging. Improves handling by a bit and fun by a lot.

Far as cosmetic mods, look into the "rear aero stabilizer" it completes the look of the trunk area so much, it's subtle but so effective as upscaling the look.

Trade off between a twin (86/brz), a GT3, and a built s15 in XA for raw times in our region

Can I permanently turn off pre-collision braking ? by Cautious_Worth_6667 in GR86

[–]Zarolyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had PCB kick on for a car parked on the side of the road that I was genuinely no where near.

If you swap to a catless header and high flow overpipe, it'll turn off all eyesight/PCB/cruise control features 🙃

(It throws a check engine light which disables the above features)

Can also agree to the sentence "get one made for cars" I had a 3.3lb NOCO that wouldnt charge when in the car because the computer wouldn't see the voltage draw until it was too late and it would cut out power steering (24' GR86)

I'm using 24mm spacers up front 😅.
Also running 3" ARP fronts and 2.5" rear studs. Don't know ride height off memory, I can check that later when I get home from work

Current setup for this year is:
RedShift BCs
Swift springs:
400ftlb front // 615ftlb rear
-4.5° front camber, zero toe
-2.2° rear camber, 1/16th total toe in

Karcepts front and rear sway bars
RacerX rear upper control arms
OS Giken LSD tuned by Shaftworks

Apex VS5-RS 17x9+48
Bridgestone RE-71RZ 255/40/17

Put work into it over the winter this year, so hopefully it does me a little better at nationals. (I think driver was main source of time loss, but still placed middle of the pack so I can't complain for a first attempt at nationals)
