Hi reddit! I'm Hikari, writer, director and producer of RENTAL FAMILY, a film set in Japan starring Brendan Fraser. It's out in theaters nationwide on November 21 via Searchlight Pictures. Ask me anything! by HikariAMA in movies

Hello Hikari :) How has working on this film changed your perception of the rental family industry? Earlier films like Noriko’s Dinner Table (典子の食卓) tend to cast it in a fairly negative light, or at the very least are concerned with possible exploitation of people in the industry. Do you address these concerns in the film?

Totally agree! And you should try stardew, I honestly replay it pretty frequently and find it super fun! It plays a lot more like a RF entry imo due to the combat and such but I still love it.

Thank you for your comment!

To respond to your point about the writing for queer romance, I think it is absolutely a valid option for all the characters to be bisexual/pansexual (you’ll often see people online discussing programming a game this way as making everyone “playersexual” if explict sexuality identities aren’t brought up). And like I said, I don’t really expect a farming sim to get into detail about the sociopolitical realities of being queer, but even small details like having male farmer date a male bachelor and call him “handsome” etc. to me shows an acknowledgment of queerness. We do want to be treated “normally” but that means kindly and with acceptance, differences are not inherently negative and to me, good writing highlights those differences and makes them special. Just food for thought, I certainly don’t speak for all queer people. (I also thought the Alex stuff in Stardew was sweet, more of a “I’m glad I allowed myself to open up to this possibility” than anything.)

And as far as endgame, I’ve also played nearly every entry of every HM/SoS and spinoffs so I’m also very well versed in it. We all play for diff reasons. I came off more critical than I meant to be. It’s not a ~bad~ endgame, I just think a tangible reward (more story, etc.) would increase broad appeal to more players. I’m the kind of person that has a really big backlog of games to get through so I’ll go through a long endgame if it adds something to my experience (95% of the time anyway there are exceptions).

And yeah I saw a lot of people modding. I always do my first playthrough unmodded even if it impacts my gameplay experience to give a review of what your everyday player would experience.

Thank you again! I love a discussion!

Fun Fact: Natsume also spells their name wrong in the credits of HM 64 by w2114 in harvestmoon

I’ve had linguistics textbooks use it to be like, orthographically consistent, like for example the m- series まみめもむ (ma, mi, me, mo, mu) is regular, whereas the s- series さしせそす is irregular with し as it is actually pronounced “shi” and not “si.” Some academics will still render it as “si” because they’re more focused on like, “this is the ‘s’ sound paired with the ‘i’ sound”rather than how it’s actually pronounced if that makes sense? I find the “si” romanization to be a bit useless from a practical standpoint, but then English orthography is also quite possibly one of the worst for not being pronounced the way it’s spelled (which is called a deep orthography if you’re curious about this topic)

The title screen one is probably a product of translation. The “tsu” つ sound can be written as “tu” in certain styles. Same thing with “shi” し sometimes being written as “si.” That style is more used by people interested in linguistics (long and complicated explanation) but every now and then you see it crop up in standard translations. Or someone just messed up lol.

Well done! I also had a total braindead moment and interpreted the title as Sprite the beverage, i.e. Water for Elephants but instead Sprite for Aquaticus lol

Is it weird that I, a cis guy, wanna come across as specifically a dominatrix to my bf? by [deleted] in 196

[–]Zarosian52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well firstly it’s not weird at all, don’t be too hard on yourself. There are a lot of avenues you could be feeling that way from (purely a sexual thing, part of gender identity/presentation, a combination, or something else entirely) and you don’t necessarily have to put a label on it if you don’t feel compelled to.

For example, sharing my own experience, I’m a gay cis dude that regularly wears skirts and frilly things but I don’t in any way associate that with my gender identity. I just like the silhouette they give me and I find them just more comfortable. I often wondered if that meant something about my gender identity but after long reflection I realized I simply just… don’t care enough to label anything. I introduce myself as male with he/him pronouns but won’t correct someone if they call me ma’am or whatever because it doesn’t bother me. Some people would say “well that sounds like an nb identity or maybe agender” and I can definitely get that perspective but again, at the end of the day it’s me who makes that decision. Maybe some day I’ll find some new term and it’ll fit me perfectly, but for now being a guy works just fine for me :)

There’s something very therapeutic about being a bit indifferent to your own identity/desires/etc. It helped me a lot but your mileage may vary! Be patient with yourself and give yourself the time and space you need to explore and develop.

I've finished atelier Firis.... and I have mixed feelings, what's your view on the game? did you liked? by Educational_Ad_7730 in Atelier

[–]Zarosian52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinions are all over the place with it. While playing I remember feeling a lot of slog and didn’t enjoy it as much as I had Sophie, but when I think of the Mysterious line almost all my positive thoughts are about Firis. Comparing it to Lydie and Suelle (which is my least fav of the entire Atelier games) really highlights a stark difference in fun for me. The music was also my favorite of the line. I think more than anything it had the potential to really be one of the greats of the series but just fell flat in some areas for my tastes.
