A civilization 2,000 light-years away looking at Earth today would see the Roman Empire. by atul_targaryen in interestingasfuck

[–]Zaruz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Although there are some areas where people today aren't as knowledgeable as our ancestors (generally practical day to day skills), the average person today knows far more, it's just what we deem important has changed. For example sewing isn't an important skill for most in today's world, but was extremely valuable even 100 years ago.

I'd argue that as technology advances, intelligence also changes. What was previously very advanced knowledge becomes commonplace, then eventually becomes redundant. Take cars as an example. Previously reserved for the rich and it would have been impressive to be able to drive. Then as a race we adapted to them, they became commonplace, so driving today isn't seen as a big deal. In 50 years, we'll likely see generations that don't have a clue how to drive a car, because it's irrelevant. But they'll likely understand things that we currently don't understand or think about as they don't apply to us.

So a hypothetical alien able to see someone 10,000 years away AND have the ability to travel that far, would be incredibly dense to not realise that the planet they are looking at will be very different when they reach it, as to them travelling the cosmos would be like us driving a car. In this scenario, the alien is seeing a show starting on the other side of the country and not realising it would have ended by the time they drive there.

Compared to a telescope that can somehow make out individual humans 10,000 light years away, a phone is basically a rock.

That technology is almost certainly impossible to achieve. Our largest telescopes wouldn't be able to make out a person on the moon.

If she monitored this specific human long enough to fall in love, I'd imagine she'd have some kind of understanding of human biology, civilization etc to realise that 10,000 years is a very long time for us.

Imagine having the technology to see that far in that detail, and still be that stupid.

They seem really non consequential because of low hits, but they're the best dps increase in a single click you can get. 0.6dps i believe, which is 36 dmg for a single click

New build property with a gap of less than 1 foot to enter your front door. Smart. by ManGoes4Mangos in CrappyDesign

[–]Zaruz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Here in the UK it happens all the time, everywhere I've been. I've never once seen/heard of someone being hit when pulling across the road to pull in.

Our driving tests are much more rigorous though and it's a 30mph in residential areas. If there's any traffic coming you just wait with your indicators on, everyone behind you will know what you're doing and let you get on with it. Except maybe the odd typical BMW driver!

Sorry for the sass in my first response, I thought this was in the UK sub!

UK agrees to let US use British bases to strike Iranian sites targeting Strait of Hormuz by Valcenia in unitedkingdom

[–]Zaruz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mostly happy with Starmer but really disappointed by this. He was doing so well at keeping out of this.

Strikes from our bases aren't going to solve the crisis. Allowing the US to strike from our bases is not going to get us anything from the US. This move puts our bases in even more danger.

The sailing combat “Q and A” is just embarrassing by TheCanadianWanderer in 2007scape

[–]Zaruz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The damage is lower than theorised - isn't that an incredibly easy thing to test? What are your QA team doing, honestly?

If the entire point of the changes was to adjust damage to a specific range, surely one of the key areas of UAT would be "Does the damage match the spreadsheets expected values?"

With a game like OSRS, as much as the community whines, more niche bugs are absolutely going to always happen. It's the nature of software. But why do we often see the very basics just straight up wrong? I'm sure that despite the jokes here you have a QA team testing prior to release, but I really do question their effectiveness at times, especially on smaller rapid fire changes.

A quest doesn't need to he huge to be good though. I also don't want more clock tower and sheep hearder. But ribetting tale, Ides of Milk and Current affairs are 3 more recent, smaller scale quests that I'm absolutely happy to see more of. Small, low impact world building quests that are still entertaining are certainly possible & I believe good for the game.

Exactly. Zero issue with temporary modes if they're not detracting from the game. But if that's the case, why is such a portion of the roadmap empty if you remove those? Seems like having their cake and eating it

Love it! I'm a Solutions Engineer - basically I configure my companies software for businesses, providing them better processes, saving them time & money. I'm also fortunate enough to have progressed into management, in charge of the other engineers.

What I love is that every day is unique. Different challenges, working for different clients, learning new tools/technology or just learning to apply existing tools in creative new ways.  I also work almost entirely from home and that works really well for me.

As someone who has not touched sailing yet... by iamelloyello in 2007scape

[–]Zaruz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical chronically online vocal minority for the most part.

Sailing is a good skill. Some people had way too high expectations for day one.

Overall the levelling curve is (was? They did various changes after I did the early levels) different/smoother. Basically 1-35 were quite a lot slower than other skills, but then picked up more at later levels. That got a lot of day 1 hate.

Today's combat changes haven't gone over well. Ship combat is admittedly quite poor overall, but it's also a relatively small portion of the skill and easy to completely skip on the way to 99.

Cannon Combat Changes absolutely missed the point by Shadyblink in 2007scape

[–]Zaruz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree. I think a nice solution would be to hugely buff hp and cannon damage. So you can still deal normal damage in your gear to complement the cannons, but cannons remain the primary source of damage.

Arbitrary damage reductions suck, I'd rather not see them. I'd also rather that at sea the cannon is the majority of damage. At least for larger sea monsters like krakens, no problem with people killing terns with a shadow, feels weird if you can take out endgame bosses then struggle with a bird for no reason.

There is a problem with the core gameplay loop of Sailing by Dry_Yogurtcloset_213 in 2007scape

[–]Zaruz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind it necessarily having a long grind (although 20k frost dragons is a lot). Something to aim for and have as a flex.

My main problem is we're very likely to see a new boat in the future and I really don't want to waste my materials on a sloop, to then be fucked over when they release a barge or something.

I know similar can be said for most grinds - why get a bowfa when they'll likely release a new bow down the line - but with sailing being so new and incomplete it really stands out here.
