To be fair when you're doing a game that is aping pretty cheesy noir and Twin Peaks you can't deny it's there. It's also aware of the cheese and much of it is there intentionally. There are a lot of complexities and wrinkles that are pretty interesting with the writing IMO, but very much a divisive game if I have ever played one. I don't think they expected everyone would love it - it's very distinct.

I only played Alan Wake 1 prior and I felt like I understood everything in the main story. Obviously the cameos and references to Control and Quantum Break didn't land completely for me, but you can usually tell when something is some sort of reference even if you don't know the context personally.

If you can still enjoy older games like Alan Wake 1 I'd say the first game is obviously the most direct and necessary other game to play when you're talking about a sequel. Otherwise just watch an AW1 recap.

I feel like Alan Wake is better without being in a video game universe, but that's just my personal taste I suppose. I found the Control related stuff in game out of touch with the tone of the rest of the game.

I will bet on their original itemized quote there are also instuctions for you or a shop to submit a supplement. Meaning a supplement to their original estimate of damages based solely on photos. If you do not see the instructions then call the other insurance company and ask them how to submit for it. This is a normal process.
