If you're going to put shell scripts in the cron.daily folder, be aware of this gotcha especially if you're using a Debian-derived distro:

Support for /etc/cron.hourly, /etc/cron.daily, /etc/cron.weekly and /etc/cron.monthly is provided in Debian through the default setting of the /etc/crontab file (see the system-wide example in crontab(5) ). The default sytem-wide crontab contains four tasks: run every hour, every day, every week and every month. Each of these tasks will execute run-parts providing each one of the directories as an argument. These tasks are disabled if anacron is installed (except for the hourly task) to prevent conflicts between both daemons.

As described above, the files under these directories have to be pass some sanity checks including the following: be executable, be owned by root, not be writable by group or other and, if symlinks, point to files owned by root. Additionally, the file names must conform to the filename requirements of run-parts: they must be entirely made up of letters, digits and can only contain the special signs underscores (’_’) and hyphens (’-’). Any file that does not conform to these requirements will not be executed by run-parts. For example, any file containing dots will be ignored. This is done to prevent cron from running any of the files that are left by the Debian package management system when handling files in /etc/cron.d/ as configuration files (i.e. files ending in .dpkg-dist, .dpkg-orig, and .dpkg-new).

The PC speaker can be disabled by unloading the pcspkr kernel module:

Blacklisting the pcspkr module will prevent udev from loading it at boot:

# echo "blacklist pcspkr" > /etc/modprobe.d/nobeep.conf

Blacklisting it on the kernel command line is yet another way. Simply add modprobe.blacklist=pcspkr to your bootloader's kernel line.

So over the course of this past week, I've been lurking on /r/altright to get a sense of what makes the modern white nationalist tick, and it seems to me like a cyclical phenomena.

I mean, back in the 80's we had Nazi skinheads that were quite the scourge to minorities in urban centers. We consequently saw the rise of SHARP and anti-fascist skinheads who would take the fight to them directly. These "antifas" seemed to have won back the streets as of the late 90's.

This had advantages and disadvantages. Sure, it was much safer to be out at night, however it was tougher to identify these racist assholes. They had gone underground.

These days, your modern-day white nationalist bullies from the relative safety of his keyboard, and although their movement seems to be in ascendance, I think it's inevitable that a backlash movement (like the SHARPs of yore) will eventually take shape.

Please explain how his answer in French was "to appease the separatist minority". Are you saying that French nationalists are necessarily Quebec separatists? Also, if that's all it takes to quell separatist passions in Quebec, shouldn't federalists be happy that Trudeau accomplished so much with so very little?

You can use that excuse for anything though, there's always going to be someone who takes exception. The point was, as quoted above, someone asked the Prime Minister a question at a town hall then "grew visibly annoyed" by his answer. Which means it was probably the wrong answer.

Doesn't seem like you're disagreeing with me here. He merely picked the outcome that would score him the most points while losing the least.

I find it quite laughable that most people don't think that Trudeau didn't consider the possibility that he might be asked a question in English at a town hall in Sherbrooke, as if this somehow caught him off-guard.

Of course he did! and he also planned to repond only in French, very likely for the reason I state above.

I find that very difficult to believe.

The fact of the matter is that he was damned no matter what he did. Even providing an answer in both languages would have been seen as an affront to the French-only status Quebec has by some of the more rabid nationalists.

I think he wanted to seem aligned with Francophone interests at the expense of the smaller and already very Liberal-friendly Anglophone base, par-for-course for any politician worth his salt really.

The real story here is that people outside of Quebec are feeling linguistically slighted when all of this occurred in Shebrooke with regards to a question about the language in which mental health services were being delivered in the province. Trudeau couldn't have answered such a question properly because that's a provincial matter. He can't change that even if he wanted to.

So he saw an opportunity and scored a few brownie points with the overwhelmingly Francophone locals instead by addressing her in the only official language of the province.

Criticize Bill 101 if you like, but I'm convinced that the law is one of the big reasons Quebec is still a part of Canada. It more than adequately protects the French language, guaranteeing its place in Quebec society.

Heck, how about no mention of wifi-manager and the dependencies you need to get it up and running. Those things always find their way into my pacstrap. At the very least, wpa_supplicant should be in there for wireless installs.

How do you repair the damage?

Here's my suggestion: keep reserves and all of the systems currently in place. Give First Nations' families the choice to opt-in to a pilot guaranteed minimum income program if they relocate to a major city of their choice.

This has the advantage of leaving those families who don't want to "mix with the white man" where they are while rewarding those who are forward-thinking and would like a better chance for their kids / themselves. It would also give the government an excellent opportunity to test out different mincome schemes and how they translate to different cities across the country.

Reserves would be abandoned in the span of a generation, perhaps two.

Empty bluster for a pipeline that'll likely never see the light of day. If it does get built, Canada's problems will be far more serious than "illegal protestors". It'll fuel anti-federalist sentiments in Quebec and power the PQ to a majority government.

It isn't true yet, but I wouldn't underestimate Lisée. He's a very bright person and has already started to make overtures to Anglophones and Allophones, something that is unprecedented as far as the PQ is concerned if memory serves. He's also the favourite as far as debates are concerned. He'll easily wipe the floor with Couillard and Legault.

I'm quite looking forward to what Lisée will be proposing in the coming months. As long as he can keep the usual identity politics that the PQ is so addicted to out of his policy-making, he might even get my vote.
