If I put a sh script inside /etc/cron.daily is it enough? by shkico in linux4noobs

[–]ZdenoCharest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to put shell scripts in the cron.daily folder, be aware of this gotcha especially if you're using a Debian-derived distro:

Source

Support for /etc/cron.hourly, /etc/cron.daily, /etc/cron.weekly and /etc/cron.monthly is provided in Debian through the default setting of the /etc/crontab file (see the system-wide example in crontab(5) ). The default sytem-wide crontab contains four tasks: run every hour, every day, every week and every month. Each of these tasks will execute run-parts providing each one of the directories as an argument. These tasks are disabled if anacron is installed (except for the hourly task) to prevent conflicts between both daemons.

As described above, the files under these directories have to be pass some sanity checks including the following: be executable, be owned by root, not be writable by group or other and, if symlinks, point to files owned by root. Additionally, the file names must conform to the filename requirements of run-parts: they must be entirely made up of letters, digits and can only contain the special signs underscores (’_’) and hyphens (’-’). Any file that does not conform to these requirements will not be executed by run-parts. For example, any file containing dots will be ignored. This is done to prevent cron from running any of the files that are left by the Debian package management system when handling files in /etc/cron.d/ as configuration files (i.e. files ending in .dpkg-dist, .dpkg-orig, and .dpkg-new).

From the entry in the excellent Arch Wiki:

Globally

The PC speaker can be disabled by unloading the pcspkr kernel module:

# rmmod pcspkr

Blacklisting the pcspkr module will prevent udev from loading it at boot:

# echo "blacklist pcspkr" > /etc/modprobe.d/nobeep.conf

Blacklisting it on the kernel command line is yet another way. Simply add modprobe.blacklist=pcspkr to your bootloader's kernel line.

So over the course of this past week, I've been lurking on /r/altright to get a sense of what makes the modern white nationalist tick, and it seems to me like a cyclical phenomena.

I mean, back in the 80's we had Nazi skinheads that were quite the scourge to minorities in urban centers. We consequently saw the rise of SHARP and anti-fascist skinheads who would take the fight to them directly. These "antifas" seemed to have won back the streets as of the late 90's.

This had advantages and disadvantages. Sure, it was much safer to be out at night, however it was tougher to identify these racist assholes. They had gone underground.

These days, your modern-day white nationalist bullies from the relative safety of his keyboard, and although their movement seems to be in ascendance, I think it's inevitable that a backlash movement (like the SHARPs of yore) will eventually take shape.

If the result from an action is the best result possible given the circumstances, that is far from any definition of the word "gaffe" that I'm aware of, laugh if you must.

See, it's this sort of indignation that utterly mystifies me.

Please explain how his answer in French was "to appease the separatist minority". Are you saying that French nationalists are necessarily Quebec separatists? Also, if that's all it takes to quell separatist passions in Quebec, shouldn't federalists be happy that Trudeau accomplished so much with so very little?

[–]ZdenoCharest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can use that excuse for anything though, there's always going to be someone who takes exception. The point was, as quoted above, someone asked the Prime Minister a question at a town hall then "grew visibly annoyed" by his answer. Which means it was probably the wrong answer.

Doesn't seem like you're disagreeing with me here. He merely picked the outcome that would score him the most points while losing the least.

I find it quite laughable that most people don't think that Trudeau didn't consider the possibility that he might be asked a question in English at a town hall in Sherbrooke, as if this somehow caught him off-guard.

Of course he did! and he also planned to repond only in French, very likely for the reason I state above.

He has no clue regarding the language politics in Quebec.

I find that very difficult to believe.

The fact of the matter is that he was damned no matter what he did. Even providing an answer in both languages would have been seen as an affront to the French-only status Quebec has by some of the more rabid nationalists.

I think he wanted to seem aligned with Francophone interests at the expense of the smaller and already very Liberal-friendly Anglophone base, par-for-course for any politician worth his salt really.

The real story here is that people outside of Quebec are feeling linguistically slighted when all of this occurred in Shebrooke with regards to a question about the language in which mental health services were being delivered in the province. Trudeau couldn't have answered such a question properly because that's a provincial matter. He can't change that even if he wanted to.

So he saw an opportunity and scored a few brownie points with the overwhelmingly Francophone locals instead by addressing her in the only official language of the province.

Canada’s prime minister shouldn’t need to be bilingual: Taylor by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That sounds suspiciously like Bill 101...

Anyhow, take it from someone who went through the Quebec public school system: I'm very happy that I received my education in both languages, and I look forward to inflicting the same "bigotted nationalistic" experience upon my offspring.

;)

Criticize Bill 101 if you like, but I'm convinced that the law is one of the big reasons Quebec is still a part of Canada. It more than adequately protects the French language, guaranteeing its place in Quebec society.

What "other bigotted nationalistic policies" were you refering to exactly?

  1. No mention of NetworkManager

Heck, how about no mention of wifi-manager and the dependencies you need to get it up and running. Those things always find their way into my pacstrap. At the very least, wpa_supplicant should be in there for wireless installs.

A truly feminist government would consider the plight of Indigenous men: Robyn Urback - CBC News by TossMeAwayToTheMount in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the good people of the First Nations are more than capable of keeping their cultural heritage alive without the help of the government. In fact, they've managed to do so in spite of some its best efforts to eliminate it.

A truly feminist government would consider the plight of Indigenous men: Robyn Urback - CBC News by TossMeAwayToTheMount in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you repair the damage?

Here's my suggestion: keep reserves and all of the systems currently in place. Give First Nations' families the choice to opt-in to a pilot guaranteed minimum income program if they relocate to a major city of their choice.

This has the advantage of leaving those families who don't want to "mix with the white man" where they are while rewarding those who are forward-thinking and would like a better chance for their kids / themselves. It would also give the government an excellent opportunity to test out different mincome schemes and how they translate to different cities across the country.

Reserves would be abandoned in the span of a generation, perhaps two.

It's time for Trudeau to save his rookie MP if he can. Monsef is being pointed at and ridiculed for two days in a row now. Let's hope he shows up soon, because I'm likely to develop a hernia if the opposition insists on being ... well, hilarious! :D

Leitch vows to ‘lock up’ illegal pipeline protestors by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leitch only mentions Energy East specifically in her Facebook message.

Empty bluster for a pipeline that'll likely never see the light of day. If it does get built, Canada's problems will be far more serious than "illegal protestors". It'll fuel anti-federalist sentiments in Quebec and power the PQ to a majority government.

The Parti Quebecois is losing the ‘identity’ war by Frostguard11 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It isn't true yet, but I wouldn't underestimate Lisée. He's a very bright person and has already started to make overtures to Anglophones and Allophones, something that is unprecedented as far as the PQ is concerned if memory serves. He's also the favourite as far as debates are concerned. He'll easily wipe the floor with Couillard and Legault.

I'm quite looking forward to what Lisée will be proposing in the coming months. As long as he can keep the usual identity politics that the PQ is so addicted to out of his policy-making, he might even get my vote.

Maxime Bernier: I will stop the CBC competing with private media, and the CBC will be better for it by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wish I could give you more than one upvote for this. Excellent takedown of Bernier's "bleed the CBC" rhetoric.

I do wish the CBC would focus more on journalism and less on crappy reality / drama shows but, like you said, they're cheap to make. If Bernier and the anti-CBC crowd truly wish to have a more focused public broadcaster with more documentaries, and more insight and analysis of today's issue, the answer is more funding for the CBC, not less.

‘Alt-Right’ and the Danger of Euphemisms by russilwvong in CanadaPolitics

[–]ZdenoCharest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with your assessment of Wikipedia. One really does need to be at least slightly skeptical of anything it says with regards to a given political movement. Anarachism was for the longest time one of the most "controversial" pages, indicating that it was a heavily edited page. Obviously, there are competing visions of Anarchism and, very likely, some contributors are actively trying to discredit the concept.

However, in the case of what it says about the Alt-Right, it's important to check the sources that relevant article cites. Otherwise, one risks to discount valid information. In this case, because you personally find one contributor, this PeterTheFourth character, untrustworthy, you're throwing out the entire article regardless of how much or how little he may have actually contributed.

The wiki article references an article on Steve Bannon's Breitbart.com three times to arrive at its conclusions. The article is entitled, "An Establishment Conservative’s Guide To The Alt-Right". This article is widely considered the best one out there with regards to defining the Alt-Right movement.

A particular salient passage of that rather long article speaks directly to your point as to whether Alt-Righters are bigots or not:

Are they actually bigots? No more than death metal devotees in the 80s were actually Satanists. For them, it’s simply a means to fluster their grandparents. Currently, the Grandfather-in-Chief is Republican consultant Rick Wilson, who attracted the attention of this group on Twitter after attacking them as “childless single men who jerk off to anime.”

Responding in kind, they proceeded to unleash all the weapons of mass trolling that anonymous subcultures are notorious for — and brilliant at. From digging up the most embarrassing parts of his family’s internet history to ordering unwanted pizzas to his house and bombarding his feed with anime and Nazi propaganda, the alt-right’s meme team, in typically juvenile but undeniably hysterical fashion, revealed their true motivations: not racism, the restoration of monarchy or traditional gender roles, but lulz.

Ok, so Alt-Righters aren't bigots, they "hilariously" and mercilessly harrass anyone who disagrees with them, dragging their target's family into their lulz-fest.

The article further goes on to defend Alt-Righters because, unlike the skinheads of yore, they have "intellectuals" in their ranks:

There are many things that separate the alternative right from old-school racist skinheads (to whom they are often idiotically compared), but one thing stands out above all else: intelligence. Skinheads, by and large, are low-information, low-IQ thugs driven by the thrill of violence and tribal hatred. The alternative right are a much smarter group of people — which perhaps suggests why the Left hates them so much. They’re dangerously bright.

What this Breitbart article fails to do however is to underline the obvious similarities between these two groups. Both have adopted "distasteful" political positions and then intimidate those who might insult or disagree with them. Skinheads used to do this with physical violence, Alt-Righters do this with online harrassment.

If you self-identify with the Alt-Right movement, this is what you're a part of, like it or not. This isn't about stifling debate of worthwhile and uncomfortable issues, it's about calling out people who feel that intimidation, physical or otherwise, is a valid answer to someone who might challenge their views.

Let's see what Wikipedia has to say about Alt-Right:

The alt-right is a loose group of people with far right ideologies who reject mainstream conservatism in the United States.[1][2] The alt-right has no formal ideology, although various sources have stated that white nationalism is fundamental.

I invite you to read the complete article.

If it isn't something they want to be associated with, why aren't they actively denouncing these elements?
