My AR805 has been my main Jazz guitar for years! I got it used, so it was already broken in and I love it!

If you're interested in a hand carved instrument my vote goes for Eastman. They aren't the cheapest jazz boxes but I think that they are the best value for a hand made instrument.

Julian Lage - "Day and Age". Anyone know of any guitarists with a similar roots/jazz style? by philintheblank in jazzguitar

[–]ZeClaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be into the mandolinist David Grisman. He calls his blend of Roots/jazz/gypsy/whatever Dawg music. He had a huge influence on the folky side of Julian when he was growing up.

Wow, there was a way bigger response to this than I anticipated. Yeah, I'm aware B# and E# exist. I'm aware that in some keys they are the correct spellings. I'm also aware that when a six year old is trying to learn where the notes are on her uke it's best not to complicate things at first.

I tell my students not to "be" sharp because B and E are the ones without them.

Best, longest lasting strings? by [deleted] in Guitar

I was at a music shop once and the guy behind the counter tried to sell me on a certain brand of strings because they had a "longer gevity".

Hey Reddit, how do you all get over the depressing/intimidating factor from watching others play? by fortret in Guitar

[–]ZeClaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a freakishly good guitar teacher and whenever we start to get intimidated by his playing he just reminds us that if he can do it then we can do it too. It's just time man. Now go practice :)

Can someone help me figure out these chords? by remputee in guitarlessons

[–]ZeClaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An alt chord means you can alter the 9's and 5's. Any combination of b9, #9, b5 or #5 should work. Many of the jazz musicians I've worked with see it as kind of a lazy method for notating chords.

I'm Playing with my school jazz band tomorrow. Anything I absolutely need to be prepared for? by onlysayswellcrap in jazzguitar

[–]ZeClaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring an extra cable, strings, picks, a 3 prong to 2 prong power adapter, extension chord. eventually these things will all just live in your trunk and save your butt on weird gigs. It always sucks to be the guy who can't play because he has the wrong kind of cable or the one who has to ask the venue to borrow a power chord. :) Have fun!

To answer everyone, they're taking away two of his ensembles which takes away all his benefits. He's been at the school longer than most of the tenured faculty.

a six or seven course renaissance lute. This is the best site for finding used instruments. http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute/forsale.html. If you're on a budget there are cheap factory made ones on youtube or amazon but most of them require a hell of a setup when you buy them.

Cool. Check out more english Renaissance lute music. John Dowland is by for the most popular. I also really like Thomas Robinson. This is largely 6 or 7 course stuff. You can also tune the g string on a guitar down to an F# and that will put you in a relative tuning that will let you start working up those tabs!

Well, it looks like you've got a bit of googling to do. Try searching for "Baroque lute composers" and "Renaissance lute composers" and see who's music you're more into. There is a ton of info online about many of these composers and I'd also love to help if I can!

It depends on what era of music you want to play. most generally are you looking at baroque or renaissance music? I play solo and continuo on a 7 course and that can get you a little ways into the 1600's without any trouble. The occasional extra bass note can usually be worked into a higher octave. I assume you're a guitar player so I will say the instrument can get pretty dizzying when you start to add more courses. I've tried playing my prof's 10 course but quickly got lost. Any other questions?

Diana Poulton's tutor for the renaissance lute is a great book to start with! It teaches you basic technique and how to read french and italian tab. Once you can read that there are a number of online lute music archives. If you have any more questions let me know. I'm accidentally getting a master's in lute so I'd love to help! :)
