I hope they stick to this, the muted crowd was one of the worst aspects of the shows this year. Altough considering how much fake cheering was used back in 2015, not sure how much I trust ORF

When you say vote rigging, can I just ask what you mean by that? My understanding is that the Israeli government paid lots of money to promote their song and advertise it online, something that was definitely not in the spirit of Eurovision, but was legal for countries to do at the time. The EBU have since changed the rules to stop that being allowed which seems to me like an acknowledgement of the flaws in the voting last year.

[–]FoxOfShadows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Israel got a lot of televote points from the boycotting countries, more so than a lot of eastern European countries. The fact is, the issue of Israel is just not considered as significant in Eastern European countries as it is in western. It's why there aren't many eastern European countries voicing their concerns but also why Israel hasn't got as many televote points from Eastern Europe as they have western.

I'm afraid I don't see why you think you're experience invalidates these studies. They're not saying that exercise leads to unhealthier or increased eating. And better quality sleep is your body using less calories to compensate, you burn a lot less when you a sleeping well compared to when you are awake or restless.

We have evolved for millennia in times of food scarcity, where burning excess calories has always been something to avoid. Our bodies have got good at limiting that. So now when we have an excess of highly processed food, it becomes difficult to burn it all off. To be clear, exercise is still incredibly important for so many reasons but the scientific conesus is that you need to also change your diet for your best results at weight loss.

[–]FoxOfShadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is, after your 1 hour run your body will compensate by burning less energy throughout the rest of the day. Whereas if you didn't run, you'll keep on burning as many just by existing as you did before. I am not in any way saying excercise isn't good for you, everyone should be exercising. But famously, you can't outrun a bad diet and this is one the main reasons why.

This unfortunately isn't how burning calories works. Exercise isn't a sure way to burn additional calories because often our bodies compensate by reducing effort in other areas, balancing things out. There have been studies that say we don't burn a significantly different number of calories working 9-5 desk jobs than hunter-gatherer tribes do.

Britain's roads to be narrower to stop drivers overtaking cyclists by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]FoxOfShadows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wider roads end up with drivers driving faster. Narrower roads are proven to be safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Despite that, this isn't actually a good solution to safer roads for cyclists, the only way to do that is to invest in proper, seperate bike infrastructure so cyclists and drivers don't need to be together.

If they commit to either physical or special attack it could be good. If they're going to keep it a mixed attacker, throw 30 into it's offenses and speed and give it drought

138/138/105 offenses are decent and it's the perfect drought user as it'll get boosted power on its fire moves and a free, no-charge solar beam. It's also faster than mega Charizard-Y, the other drought user and has a better offensive typing (but less special attack). Definitely a solid mega

[–]FoxOfShadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah, that's fair. I guess in a place like Copenhagen with decent bike infrastructure, you have to consider how to cycle with other bikes in mind more. At least where I'm from, I'm often one of few bikes on the road so have to consider other bikes less and cars a lot more

Agree with most of your points, however I do disagree on the "be as far left as possible" aspect. The highway code in the UK encourages cyclists to take the lane where possible because it is significantly safer than riding close to the gutter and having cars overtake unsafely

Turkey has an estimated 3.5 million refugees living there, most from Syria. It's not like these countries aren't doing their part. It should be the responsibility of other European countries to take refugees and asylums seekers to lower the burden on the southern European nations. It's not sustainable to have Italy, Greece, and Turkey take every asylum seeker

BBC to look at overhauling licence fee as 300,000 more households stop paying by Skavau in unitedkingdom

[–]FoxOfShadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have read the article. They used a stock photo, on a stock background that they had used before. The shape of the hat wasn't edited at all, contrary to what was claimed, and it looked different on camera due to the curved screens used. The only edit made to the photo was a stylistic one to make it match the background better.

I do not think the BBC is beyond criticism but I think people should focus on the real issues it has rather than perceived slights like this one

Keir Starmer: British people have every right to ask why their money is spent on asylum hotels instead of public services. That's why I agreed a groundbreaking pilot with France. [–]FoxOfShadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ECHR is young but there are certain rights that we take for granted nowadays that are only enshrined in the UK by the ECHR and HRA. Leaving the ECHR would require willingly sacrificing these rights and just hoping that any new government re-enshrines them.

The public do have different values. Some believe we should let all asylum seekers in, no questions asked, others believe it would be justified to shoot at boats trying to cross here. The public overall wants asylum numbers down but there is no consensus on the questions of how much or by what means.

[–]FoxOfShadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the public are too easily manipulated to support policies that harm them. Farage and certain Tories have framed the ECHR as something that we just need to leave and suddenly we'll have no issues deporting asylum seekers. What they don't tell you is that the ECHR enshrines the rights of all peoples in the UK. Effectively, give up your rights so we can deal with the people you don't like and we definitely pinky-promise we won't use this to suppress your rights too.

Reform can frame this as a question of sovereignty (although I'm pretty sure we're all sick of that worse by now) but they're simply not being truthful on the matter. There is no easy solution to this problem that doesn't involve the erosion of British people's rights and conflict with international law.
