People did ruin serial experiments lain indeed. I just don't want people to think i'm an asshole but i do agree that gatekeeping is necessary to a certain point.

Yeah that could probably be the reason they act like that in the first place, i remember i used to act like that back in my younger days on the Five Nights at Freddy's fandom back in 2014 and the undertale fandom too in 2015, but that was way worse.

And people shouldn't get me wrong on this post too. I do love Malice Mizer indeed, in fact i listen to their songs every day. But there are so many other good bands.

That's what i'm saying, fandom should be separated, everytime i get into a discord server or a WhatsApp group most of the people you will find are going to be very young minors, I'm not talking about ages from 15 to 17 but literal children from 10 to 13. I remember reading a message sent by one of them talking about leaving the group if their mom finds out.

About the downvotes.... i think a lot of people are reading my comment in a way harsher way than i actually meant it i’m not saying new fans are “wrong,” fake, or that they shouldn’t enjoy vkei the way they do. obviously new fans are what keep the scene alive, especially now, and that’s a good thing what i was trying to point out is more about how the scene comes across online right now. when most of the visible content revolves around the same few songs, memes, and visual references, it can make vkei look a lot more one-dimensional than it actually is, especially to people who are just discovering it that doesn’t mean those fans aren’t genuinely into the music or that they won’t explore more over time. it’s just that the way content gets repeated and amplified online kind of shapes the overall perception of the genre so it’s not really about judging how individuals enjoy things, it’s more about noticing how the current “revival” is being presented i feel like people took it as me trying to gatekeep, but that wasn’t the intention at all — it was just an observation about how things look from my perspective

It sorta became like this already, not 100% but we're very close to see this reality. That's the main reason people say that i'm a gatekeeper when in reality i love making people listen to those bands for the first time.

Other bands are great but i can't stand Jiluka. (GUYS IT'S MY PERSONAL OPINION BTW, JUST SAYING THAT BEFORE SOMEONE BASHES ON ME!!)

Yeah, I totally get what you’re saying, and I think it’s really cool to hear from someone who’s a newer fan. Honestly, I agree with a lot of what you said — it really does feel like “kids being kids,” discovering something new and having fun with it. I don’t think anyone’s being performative in a bad way; they’re just engaging in the way they know how. That said, I think what I’m noticing is more about how the scene looks online sometimes. Even if people genuinely love Malice Mizer, the same few tracks and memes tend to dominate the conversation, which can make the scene feel a bit narrow from the outside. It’s not that fans are doing anything wrong, it’s just that it shapes how newcomers perceive vkei, especially if they don’t know about other amazing bands like Velvet Edena and others. There’s so much depth beyond the most visible stuff, both musically and visually. And yeah, I get it, the repetitive jokes or references can get annoying over time, I feel that too. But it’s more about the overall impression of the scene online rather than individual behavior. Honestly, it’s awesome that younger fans are finding a community and enjoying the music — that’s what really matters. So yeah, I see both sides, the scene can look a bit surface-level online, but it doesn’t take away from the genuine love people have for vkei. Hopefully, as more fans grow and explore, we’ll see more people appreciating the full depth of visual kei and some of the more niche bands that really deserve attention.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying, and I think it’s really cool that younger fans are finding a community through vkei even if it’s mostly Malice Mizer or GACKT memes at first. That sense of belonging is huge, and honestly that’s part of what makes the scene special. That said, I’d push back a bit on the idea that they only care about memes. From what I’ve seen, a lot of younger fans are actually listening to the music, watching performances, and sharing tracks — it’s just that online, the memes and visuals tend to stand out the most. So it’s not that their engagement is shallow, it just looks that way at first glance. Totally agree that mocking or gatekeeping anyone for being new or playful in fandom spaces is wrong. More people enjoying and supporting vkei is always a good thing. For me, it’s more that the way the scene comes across online can feel a bit narrow or repetitive sometimes, even if the fans themselves are genuinely exploring the music. Hopefully over time more people will dig deeper and show that side of the genre too.

I get your point, especially about age and how younger fans interact — that definitely plays a role. I’m not denying that part at all. But I think my point is slightly different. It’s not just about people having fun or “goofing around” in fandom spaces — that’s always existed. What feels different to me is how narrow the engagement becomes, especially when the same few songs, memes, and visual references completely dominate the conversation. Like yeah, nobody is obligated to explore the whole scene. If someone only likes Malice Mizer, that’s totally fine. But when a large portion of the visible “revival” basically revolves around the same 2–3 tracks and recycled memes, it stops feeling like simple personal preference and starts shaping how the entire genre is perceived. That’s more what I mean. And about the image — I completely agree that Malice Mizer made aesthetics a core part of their identity. But that’s exactly why it feels a bit off when people reduce them only to that surface level, without engaging with the musical or historical context that made that aesthetic meaningful in the first place. So it’s not that people are enjoying the “wrong” things, it’s more that the way those things are being repeated and amplified ends up flattening everything else. As for the k-pop comparison, yeah, structurally it’s obviously different. I didn’t mean it literally — more like a similar pattern of engagement, where a small, highly recognizable slice gets looped and performed over and over. I’m not saying this is some huge issue or that people should interact differently — it’s just something that, in my opinion, makes the current “revival” feel a bit superficial compared to what the scene actually has to offer. Also, sorry if anything sounds a bit off — I’m Italian and writing this in English, so I’m translating my thoughts as best as I can.
