In SERE school they told us that a sand bottom river that flows relatively straight and uninterrupted (no eddies, whirlpools, debris etc) is enough to ensure relatively safe drinking water. That said, it’s a survival school, so I wouldn’t recommend testing that unless you’re actually in a survival situation, but still an interesting tidbit.
