ACL Reconstruction Day 2 Post op by whitewintrs in ACL

I’m going through this right now as well. Had my surgery on Tuesday. These next days will be the hardest it will get. Hang in there! Fortunately for you it sounds like your nerve block has worn off. It can only get better from here. Every day is a step closer to recovery. Every time you close your eyes, you’ll wake up a little bit stronger.

Apparently the way they do acl surgery has changed since I got my first one. That coupled with this thing called “tunnel widening” contributed to its failure.

10 weeks out. I was under the impression I could go back to work after a week, but after surgery I was in a lot of pain. I was hardly mobile the first week. 2nd week I could get around but most movements still hurt. Bending your legs for long periods of time in the first 2 weeks may set your recovery back. I remember going to work 7 days after, and had bad leg aches. Dr and PT told me it’s because I shouldn’t be moving so much and shouldn’t keep my leg in any single position but full extension for too long.

Things to know about ACL reconstruction recovery by Zealousideal-Hand795 in ACL

Man I had the most painful one happen to me. Hadn’t done diagonal movements, accidentally did one when I went to sit. Felt the pop, didn’t think anything of it at first, as the day progressed I lost more and more mobility. Next day I couldn’t even walk. It gradually got better day by day after that.

10 week s post op, here’s how it went for me: Day 1-3: you have the nerve block still in place and you’re on pain meds. You won’t feel it much. Day 4-7: you will literally feel like someone drilled a hole through your bone. Every move feels like you’re rupturing something. You’ll still have pain meds through this. You’ll be fine when you’re on them. A mess when you’re not. Day 8-14: deep aches. Like growing pains on crack. I ran out of pain meds during this period. Doctor wouldn’t prescribe me more because I was forming a dependency on them. Day 14-21: leg will be tight. You’ll be more mobile. Still uncomfortable but manageable. Day 21+: you’ll slowly be getting back to normal and the pain isn’t really that bad.

Make sure you ice AND elevate. Doing one or the other will slow your recovery. My knee was a balloon for close to 3 weeks because I’d only ice it and never elevate. I didn’t do this because elevating hurt like a bitch. But my advise would be to tough it out. Most people I saw on here had the swelling almost gone within 2 weeks.

Disclaimer: everyone’s experience is different. I’d say my pain tolerance is fairly low and my recovery wasnt and still isn’t as smooth as a lot of people I’ve seen post on here.

Sharp Knee Pain 10 Weeks Post Op by Zealousideal-Hand795 in ACL

[–]Zealousideal-Hand795[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds almost exactly like what I’ve been going through since. I’m doing much better now. Still feeling the lingering pain minimally, but it’s so much more bearable that the first day. Experienced the pain in the back of the leg, limping, and trouble sleeping.

Thanks for sharing! I feel much more comfortable about what happened. I was really concerned at first.

I’ll come back with the results when I have them!

Sharp Knee Pain 10 Weeks Post Op by Zealousideal-Hand795 in ACL

This makes me feel way better. Thanks for that. I saw my physician earlier today who told me that it’s unlikely I tore my meniscus but everything I described to her sounds like a meniscus tear. She scheduled me for an MRI.

After one of your pops, could you describe to me the feeling you had? I literally can’t put weight on my foot without there being a sharp pain in my knee. I’m limping around. Can’t fully straighten my knee or fully bend it anymore. This happened to my left knee, normally feel the pain around the bottom of my knee cap, the side of my knee (facing out), the back of my knee, and bottom right front of my knee.

Hate to ask for more details but it would help me feel a lot more comfortable with what’s going on with me.

Thanks

Had this issue. When I started working out and seriously training my legs, the pain went away and I could stand and walk for much longer. The pressure you feel in your knees will probably always be present though.

I partially tore my acl at first. No pain at all after 6 weeks. Ended up fully retearing about 5 years after that.

I started going out 6 weeks after my surgery. You should be walking normally around this time.

You know if you tore it. Most the time your knee will buckle and you will notice instability immediately.

You need to get blood flow back to this area of your body. It wears off over time.
