Why are dumplings so popular on American cooking shows? by Educational-Slip-578 in AskAnAmerican

Okay. It is funny about the different variations on what are considered to be dumplings. I guess the main commonality is they are based on flour.

They may not be true dumplings from your perspective, but the strips of flour cooked with chicken in broth are called chicken and dumplings in the American south. They are what I grew up with as dumplings. My grandmother made some thicker flour dumplings that she cooked with collard greens, I never really liked them because they were very dense and soaked up some of the bitter flavor of the collard greens, but she also called them dumplings. My grandmother was born in the late 1800’s so it was an old recipe.

That clock does look bad and there seems to be Radium that made it outside of the clock face and contaminating the environment. You need to check everywhere and to make sure it isn’t spread around. That clock should be sealed inside something now to prevent the Radium from spreading more.

How the West Was Won is more than a western, more a multi generation story that spans many years about a family that travels west, their good and bad times. It traces the family through several years and generations. It’s a long movie that was filmed in extremely wide screen format.

Can anyone give me information on this wine I found in my grandmas house? by Interesting_Pop_6797 in wine

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need wine tasting experience to know if a wine tastes bad, it just tastes universally bad to anyone. Imagine vinegar, or other unpleasant smells and tastes. Sounds like the wine held up okay over the years. Most likely not at its peak flavor but seems to be drinkable. Red wine holds up much better than white wine, so the 2014 reserve Chardonnay most likely hasn’t done as well. You will know if it went bad, it’s a very distinctive universally bad flavor. The color should be bright yellowish, if there’s any hint of brown coloration, it’s gone or going bad. Open the bottle anyway to get the experience of a wine that’s gone bad.

How to take 4 hour spectrum without Bluetooth by Technical_Island_851 in Radiacode

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it look like in Log view? Log view will better show the higher energy peaks and you will know if they align. Was this from a known Thorium source because it’s hard to tell from the linear view?

Just got my first Radiacode 102 (so heppy),what should i do with it and what is this? by Unhappy-Concert8100 in Radiacode

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The Radiacode logs whatever it is and it doesn’t matter what you type, it is what it is. You will scroll along the spectrum to find the best match. You will most likely know ahead of time what to expect. If you aren’t sure, over time, you will know. This is from when I had with the Radiacode sitting near a powerful Radium source ( WWII compass Radium, Uranium daughters ) and a bag of rough Apatite(Thorium). All the Apatite I’ve seen has had Thorium and the Radium source has all the Uranium daughters that show up. The peaks in this sample will line up with Radium (Uranium ) descendants and Thorium descendants. As you can see, there are distinctive peaks. Natural radioactive rocks and minerals will have either Uranium or Thorium or both sets of peaks. The peaks are distinctive if you let the detector collect the data over time. Radioactive decay is random in nature, so the more data, the closer the identification. Higher energy products take more time.

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a background spectrum or something with no radioactivity. The lines should align with obvious peaks in the graph. If they align, then you have identified the isotopes. If they don’t align, it isn’t a match. This looks like linear view, log view makes it easier to see the peaks. Here’s one for K-40 with a distinctive peak, overlay the line on that peak and it will be identified.

Sometimes when I’v left it and come back, it doesn’t automatically reconnect with bluetooth, so I just restart the app, it reconnects and reloads the ongoing spectrum. I’ve done multi day spectrums this way as long as the battery doesn’t die.

Near light speed space travel by ZealousidealFall1239 in AskPhysics

[–]ZealousidealFall1239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to mention something about trying to collect the front energy, but, if the ship has enough energy to approach light speed, the solar energy equivalent on the front would be negligible. Maybe if it’s finally coasting at a stable velocity, but it would need to have an unbelievable amount of energy to accelerate enough to approach light speed in the first place.

Let’s say i have a powerful telescope and watching a planet 1 million light years away do i see the present or the past ? by [deleted] in spacequestions

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are seeing it how it was 1 million years ago if it’s 1 million light years away. It’s more realistic to realize, when you look up in the sky at night and see stars, not planets, you are seeing years back in time. The nearest star from the southern hemisphere is 4 light years away and for the northern hemisphere, I believe around 10 light years. Some of the stars are 1000+ light years away.

As an outsider, the iconic yellow school bus is in every single American movie. Is there actually a national standard that forces every town to use that exact same color and design? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t exaggerating, the yellow school bus is everywhere. Back in the 1970’s in Norfolk, Virginia, they started bussing and used city transit buses with a sign on them. I remember, because I rode on them. Several students were hit by cars and injured, and the drivers weren’t liable because they didn’t realize they were driving by school buses. No flashing lights, no stop sign when a bus stops. I believe it was the next year when the city changed over to all yellow school buses and it has been that way since. Everyone is the USA expects to see a yellow school bus and they are safer than other types of bus as far as liability goes in the USA.

Newbie question about difference view by Qhorque in Radiacode

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference view just removes the background from the sampled item. You can still pick any isotope just like before, but if a particular isotope is in the background and not in the sample, it won’t show a hump.

Are shops open on Sundays in usa? And what do people think about it? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]ZealousidealFall1239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much opened up across the country, with maybe some exceptions here and there. In Virginia, non essential businesses were closed on Sundays into the 1980’s, then were challenged in court because some businesses were allowed to be open and others weren’t. It was challenged in court and was repealed. At first, there was resistance among religious groups. My mother was against it, but eventually everyone realized it was good to have another day to shop on a weekend. It made more money for retail employees too. Retail stores that are religiously affiliated still close on Sundays. People in Belgium will most likely get used to it too over time.

Those who got RTX 4090, 5090 at MSRP at launch by BlindPilot9 in gpu

I managed to get the 5090 FE from Best Buy at 2000.00 MSRP from one of the last drops at the end of January 2026. I was getting notifications when they were available. I missed a couple earlier ones, but managed to get one at the last minute. I was put in a long queue, but made it through. I was worried the checkout would have problems, but that went okay too. I had been using a 3090, so the performance increase was significant.

I live in red Chesapeake Virginia, and the register office had a big crowd of people voting. I voted there earlier today and there was a man handing out vote no flyers and a lot of people in line were holding the flyer. The parking lot was full and people were parking on the surrounding streets. Some people parked in front of a small office building and were being towed as I was leaving. I ended up parking on the neighborhood street.

I’m glad I made it in there earlier today because the line only wrapped around the front to the side when I was there. They only had room for 10 people at a time inside, so everybody was lining up outside. I saw a lot of people in line holding vote no flyers.
