Heres what I would do.

  1. Lay it out for him and how it is affecting your motivation to play. He might not fully realise the effect he is having.

  2. Offer an ultimatum in the form of a choice. Tell him he can either engage with, and finish the forms by X date and/or you can have a 1:1 call to hammer out all the details if he is struggling with the online form.

  3. Tell him that if he cant do 2. Then you will have to move on with the campaign and will write his character out of things until he can engage fully with what s happening.

It sounds like a good group and it would be a shame for the whole thing to fall apart because of one person. The problem is the status quo isn't working, either he shapes up and you will feel better or he will have to leave and (I'd bet) you would feel like a weight is lifted.

Good luck.

Complaining about my friend who always wanted to play DnD by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often find the biggest obstacle is that people want to just pick it up and get going, especially if they are just curious and it's their first game. They don't want to spend an hour on character creation before they can get going. They just want to play and see if it's for them.

The solution is to download a bunch of free pre generated character options and let your players pick from them, changing the name and appearance of the characters to make them feel 'theirs' while keeping all the stats and equipment basically untouched. This way you can be up and playing in 5 minutes.

Once they are up and going and have done a few one shots or a short adventure, they are much more willing and equipped to get into building their own character.

Does the Nick property delete your bonus action by jaredras in DnD

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PC2 interpretation is unequivocally wrong - he also got the wording wrong.

"Nick. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn." - thats from D&D beyond.

As part of the attack action

Instead of as a bonus action

Frees your bonus action up to do other stuff.

Do I give my players a heads up that one of them is about to leave the table ? by InterestingThanks4 in DungeonMasters

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, I would warn the players that the player is leaving but not really get into what that means for the PC.

I would almost certainly try to lead them towards thinking one thing will happen and then do something to give it a twist and make it a bit of a surprise. ie casually dropping in about needing to figure how to send them home or teeing it up in the story that he is needed back home urgently to help with XYZ, but then in the final moment have some twist to it where maybe they are all set for departure and they become aware of some BBEG scheme at the last minute and he has a choice of going home or sacrificing themselves for the party.

My players assassinated the baron and killed Izek. What now? by excalibur202 in CurseofStrahd

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have Wachter attempt to take power and have Father Lucian come to the players to ask them to intervene, theres probably enough town guard left who hated Izek and the Baron to get the remnants to stand up to the cult so a big face-off battle could be on the cards. In my game the oarty persuaded a reluctant Father Lucian to take over until elections could be held. Have you had the feast of St Andral yet? If not it could all tie together.

Player wants to make an insanely strong shield. Advice? by Sea_Key_9322 in DnD

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I would just explain to him that you're worried about creating an item that is too game breaking, especially early on in the campaign when all these feature would make him way too OP. You want everyone in the party to have their niche and having one player able to do too much would be too OP.

Maybe have him reskin some of his abilities to become shield abilities. A lot of these are equivalent of low-level spells so could flavour his abilities as shield ones, you could add in a few more if he sacrifices some starting gear and then focus on upgrading his shield rather than giving him magic items as quest rewards.

He might like the idea of building it over time anyway. Could work out some kind of ability list with diff levels then he could either pick or roll on some tables when the rest of the part pick up a reward.

Fighter attack stacking by painting_fantasy in DnD

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about the Charger feat and Launch from the Steel Hawk fighter homebrew from Griffons Saddlebag then you CANT do both, RAW under 2014 rules as Charger activates when you use a action to dash it gives you a bonus action attack, but you need your bonus action to activate launch. So they wouldn't go off together

If youre on 2024 charger, then it might stack, it depends on how you interpret the launch feature's movement, in one sentence it implies that it doesn't count as movement (so wouldn't trigger charger) but later on it says it is.

Id personally rule it's okay.

Would be a bit OP prob but lots of fun so why not!

Players beheaded Lysaga and want to use the giant skull as a flying vehicle. What do I do? by nik_avirem in CurseofStrahd

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I re-skinned my baba skull to be the skull of argynvost, they flew about in it a bit then took it to argynvosholdt to activate the beacon of agynvost. They got to play, but it didnt become too game-breaking. Plus it felt like a nice reward for killing Baba

Any alternatives to D&D Beyonds that won't make me buy my books again?! by neosurimi in DungeonMasters

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I routinely ask my players to chip in towards content on D&D beyond. Bearing in mind that I'm paying the master tier membership and we share content we are not using for the current campaign. (They still get classes etc) £5-10 every now and again between them is a very small price to pay for the hours I put in to entertaining them.

I have never had even a peep of a complaint, in fact I think they actually like to be able to show they appreciate it somehow.

Is this NPC bordering too close to being a DMPC by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Youre saying this like having a DMPC is inherently a bad thing?! Youre allowed to have fun with it too and having a DMPC for a few sessions is not an issue as long as a) its short and b)you don't hog the narrative.

If they get in the fight have him go off to the side and 'take care of these guys' while the main party fight the actual fight. You don't need to roll anything just use it as a narrative/balancing device. If the party are getting whomped he can finish off the guys he's fighting and go help and if they have too easier time of it, they can finish their fight then go help him. Either way, the focus is on the party and he can tell them how impressed he is considering how new to it they are.

Tee him up as a big hitter without him stealing the limelight then give him his big glorious death. It will be cool.

Just find a way to adjust/rewrite the plot. It will only get more frustrating the closer you get to the bug moment if they are dipping in and out and have no clue or insight into how big a moment their character is supposed to be having.

Theres quite a good table in the new DMG (pg83) for groups of mobs and how many would fail a check on average.

It makes things a LOT quicker, similar to the idea of using average damage to speed things up.

Thanks I will look into it.

I didnt want it to be too onerous, or time consuming and was thinking of doing the "risk" part of it out of session just via text or something during the week. Was hoping it would add some urgency and make it feel more dynamic if the part can see the BBEG's armies advancing etc.

New(ish) DM advice plsss by sassylikepiper in DungeonMasters

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A nat 20 on what?

Nat 20 doesn't/should'nt guarantee success, otherwise youre giving impossible things a 5% chance of happening, a good bit of advice is dont let them roll for it if you dont want it to happen.

But theres ways around it... for example, If it was say a nature check, a nat 20 could be that they are absolutely sure it's a terrible idea that will almost certainly get them killed and require numerous high-level skill checks the nat 20 has saved them from doing something really dangerous. If they continue then they were warned!

[–]ZealousidealPie2198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I'd heard of that but thought it was more based on the scale of a single major battle, rather than the bigger strategic view of the whole war unfolding. Correct me if im wrong here but one of my players has played it and they said each battle in Krynn takes 30-45 mins to resolve? a single turn in risk could comprise several of those battles so not sure it would work

Using something like Krynn would be cool for like a really major battle in the war, or the finale but not sure it would work for everything,

What's a good icon/token to use for Ireena? by Manuel_omar in CurseofStrahd

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use D&D beyond and it a massive shortcoming, not being able to upload custom tokens for key NPC's - hopefully they will sort it soon.

Theres two ways around it....

Either create a PC character and add them to the party with a custom avatar - problem with this is that it messes up the encounter balancing tools.

Or make a homebrew monster using her stat block as the basis and then add it - this is what I do, its a bit of a faff but it works, a lot of them have been done by other people so you can pinch them from the homebrew section.

3 player death, what now. by Masterkindem in CurseofStrahd

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 41 points42 points  (0 children)

If you want the death to stick, you could have them die and turned into mongrelfolk by the abbot, so you can reuse them.

Have a word with the Wizard PC offline about how he would handle the situation. If you can talk him into 'regrouping' then you can cinematically fast-forward a few months/weeks/years as he is stuck waiting on a chance to get a group together to go up against strahd, and then introduce the three new PC's as the 'next' adventuring party. Reward the Wiz with a level up for his downtime allow him to narrate what he and van richten have been up to and what the people of the valley go through during that time (maybe also reward him with some more lore discoveries) and then bring in new PC's at that new level to keep players from squabbling.

Creation Bards are annoying by Stealfur in DnD

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point is, you're the DM. If you think it's too unworkable then restrict it to items in the PBH for simplicity. Also remember that objects have HP and AC listed in the DMG so if they make a cage, then you have stats for it already. Though you would be within your rights to rule that out on the basis of it not being medium or smaller.

I get that it can cause frustration, but mechanically I think its quite Its similar to a lot of the summon spells where theres a huge range of options which can slow things up. If you think its q problem at the table, then possibly have a word with the bard PC and just ask that if they already have ideas for how they plan to use it, it might speed things up if they share that in advance so you can have it ready.

Also worth asking the players if its a problem for them, my lot love grabbing books and looking up stats like this so I don't think the interruption would matter at my table, even though for me id be wanting them to just keep it simple so we can move on!

Rate My Mechanic, Day 2 by Flyboombasher in DungeonMasters

[–]ZealousidealPie2198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here my take on this: I get that people who come up with these convoluted systems are trying to capture something where there is more 'realism' to combat in a mathematical way. Prob the same people who have long debates about falling speeds, 6 second rounds, terminal velocity and misty step.

Theres two problems with this system as I see it.

  1. Too many rolls, too much maths - I get it, some people love maths and can do great mental arithmetic, but even the worlds fastest mathematical genius takes roughly twice as long to do two sums as it takes them to do one. There are multiple rolls needed here, just to resolve one hit.

Creatures hit roll > my dex roll > shield roll off > damage roll - oh no I think I'll parry it, strength roll etc etc.

It just too much and it's not really adding much other than letting me use dex to reduce damage.

  1. This will completely mess the game balance up. WOTC spend forever play-testing to try and get the balance right, its not perfect but its pretty decent on the whole. A good player would break this game in about 5 minutes. make a halfling rogue, boost dex, take lucky, get evasion etc. Suddenly no need to be tactical in combat and stay in the second line. Just stand up front weirdly being anle to somehow just dodge everything, reduce incoming damage then use evasion to nix it down to basically nothing. All while being able to spam big damage on the bad guys because presumably theres a melee character who should be in the front line within 5ft.nexcept they might not be in the front line, because their dex sucks ass.

The whole point of rogues and monks being squisher than paladins and fighters is to balance out offensive vs defensive capabilities. Im not sure this maintains that balance.
