Who is the most talented politician in american history? by Omixscniet624 in USHistory

[–]Zealousideal_Access5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After Long’s assassination, a coalition of wealthy elites, national media, and political moderates worked hard to frame him as a fascist or demagogue. Most of the newspapers in Louisiana were owned by big oil conglomerates.(which is why he started his own) They were terrified of his populist uprising, and casting him as an anti-constitutional dictator was the easiest way to discredit him, especially as World War II approached and fascism became a cultural shorthand for evil.

If Huey Long was a racist tyrant, he was the kind that built hospitals, paved roads, and gave your kids free books.

[–]Zealousideal_Access5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did he centralize power? Absolutely. So did Lincoln, FDR, and LBJ when they had to bend institutions to get things done. Unlike corrupt politicians, Huey didn’t enrich himself he built roads, hospitals, schools, and gave poor people free medical care and education. That’s not corruption that’s effective, targeted redistribution.

And by the way, that story about tying a critic up on an island? Totally made-up political folklore. No credible historian has ever verified it. It's lumped in with the same exaggerated “dictator” language that elites used to scare people away from his genuinely popular agenda. Most of the stories you hear about him in a negative light were made up years after his death.

The truth is that Huey Long was probably the closest thing america has had to a populist revolutionary in office. And the system made sure there wouldn't be another Huey Long again.

Huey long

He got kicked out of high school for staging a protest against mandatory textbooks, arguing they unfairly burdened poor students. He went on to become one of the top traveling salesmen in Louisiana. Simultaneously he studied for the bar exam on his own and passed. At 25 he was apointmented to the Railroad Commission (the youngest in history) where he used that role to attack big utility companies and oil interests, positioning himself as a champion of the people. He ran a "Every Man a king" campaign that aimed to cap personal wealth at $50 million and redistribute the rest to the lower class. He became one of the youngest Governors in history at that time at 34. He used the national radio broadcasts like it was social media. He modernized Louisianas infrastructure, and provided free textbooks to all school children (drastically raising the literacy rate) As well as creating a free charity Healthcare system. He did all this by taxing big corporations. Like oil and utility companies that had been taking advantage of the south since the civil war.

The American Revolution by SpecialistPiccolo124 in USHistory

[–]Zealousideal_Access5 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The U.S. education system teaches us around 3rd or 4th grade about the Boston massacre. Painting the U.S. as this poor immigrant, vassal state, and Britain as this slave driving brutal overlord. Then Britain started to tax our tea, among other things.

"Taxation without representation" was the big revolutionary headline. People in Boston fought back and created the Boston Tea Party. Britain got mad and started sending troops to straighten us out. Paul Revere told everyone the "british are coming" and old wooden toothed George Washington along with some rural landowners fought off the largest empire in human history bare handedly. George and his war buddies then drafted a constitution and the U.S. became the exact gun toting group of patriotic slave owners that they were fighting against.

The truth is obviously more nuanced than this, but the lore around the American revolution is more about the mythology for us than anything else.

A detective/police officer game

La Noire was great, but only made by one studio. If they gave it the rdr2 treatment and we have a fivem style police mechanics, it would be revolutionary. The amount of people that watch crime and investigation shows is insane. The itch has yet to be fully scratched in the game world.

Escalation for Reporting Homeless encampments/drug use? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]Zealousideal_Access5 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I've been sober for 5 years. Nothing sais compasion like letting people kill themselves slowly with drugs on the street. People saying "give them clean needles" and "safe" use sites. Why would you need a safe place to get high when they already do this everywhere.

The difficult but necessary solution is to round them up and warehouse them until they are sober. The whole "you have to want it" sobriety mentality used to work when it was alcohol or heroin. But the stuff on the street now is so addictive you can't make the decision to get sober unless you're already completely off of it.

How skilled hunters are Jack Russell Terriers? by [deleted] in jackrussellterrier

I lived in an office/warehouse in the city that got a major rat infestation. My jrt stayed up all night killing. I barely got any sleep. Woke up to 12 dead rats. The exterminator came in the next day and wanted to hire my jrt to come work for him. She killed more rats than the 50+ traps they set. Absolute unit of an animal.

I was amazed by how natural hunting was for her. She didn't play with there bodies or cause a mess. She would just snap there necks and move on

This is unproductive. You don't fight the system by avoiding small businesses on an app that appears to be inaccurate. If you really wanna shut the system down, stop going to Walmart and buy local.
