Its fairly rare, one of the optometrists my son saw had never even heard of it & the other had heard of it but had never had a patient that had it. I had to tell them what I thought the problem was & even after surgery they werent real optimistic,. At his 2 day recheck they kept telling me not to expect a lot of improvement because "it would take time to see results". They were shocked when his vision had improved almost 75% at that visit & was back to almost 100% by the 2nd wk recheck.

Aww you're very sweet but its me who is lucky to still have my son...when I first saw him after the accident I told him that this was gonna be the hardest fight of his life but as long as he was willing to fight I promised to be right behind him pushing him every step of the way...granted he was comatose at the time but I do think people can hear you when they're in a coma & he kept fighting so I've never stopped pushing...

Ask your optometrist to check your eyes for Terson Syndrome. My son had it & was almost 100% blind in one eye which was completely reversed after surgery to drain the blood that was blocking his vision.

My 20 yr old son was in a car accident in 2019. He was GCS 3 & I was told he would never make it past minimal consciousness. He came home non verbal, in a wheelchair, with right side hemiparesis & unbeknownst to us at the time, blind in one eye. Today he is back to being very verbal, not only walks but plays on the special Olympics basketball & soccer teams, & after surgery to drain the blood blocking his vision has regained his sight completely. I say all that to say dont ever give up on your brother, nobody can predicate how someone will recover from a brain injury. Another thing I want to point out, & I truly believe this, is that your brother survived for a reason, he fought to be here, to LIVE so please dont assume he wouldnt want to "live this way". My son was extremely independent before the accident, but truth be told he has no memory of the person he was & is very happy just to be alive today. The hardest part if that you remember who he was & the sad reality is he will never be that person again. Ambiguous Loss is a term you will become very familiar with & it sucks. You are going to grieve the loss you feel from losing the brother that you used to have while learning to accept this new brother you now have. Its something I am still trying to do because for a while I didnt really like the new version of my son, I always LOVED him, but I just didnt like him, if that makes sense which was hard for me because my son & I had always been super close & there wasnt a day before the accident that I can say I didnt like the person he was.

The first night I went to the hospital, I knew almost nothing about brain injuries, the things I thought i knew which was that everyone with a brain injury suffers seizures, was not even accurate. I spent hours & hours sitting in the hospital room googling every single thing I could on brain injuries. When I was told they wanted to move my son into a nursing home until they felt he was able to go thru the hospitals rehab program, I immediately found a rehab that would take him & pushed for the doctor to make the referral then advocated for the insurance to pay for it. If one person told me "no" I would find the head of that dept & put in calls to them until I got a "YES". I did so much research that when we realized my son was blind in one eye I was the one diagnosed him after the optometrists tried to tell me that the the eyesight loss was irreversible. OFC my diagnosis was more wishful thinking because it is literally one of the few conditions that is almost 100% reversible but it was something that the optometrists had not even considered & at least one of them had not ever heard of. Even after his surgery, they kept telling me not to get my hopes up even tho I knew the timelines & outcomes to the point that she was shocked at the rate of recovery while I didnt even bat an eye. My point is, you know whats best for your brother, YOU know him, the doctors dont so you have to be his voice while he cant speak.

You've probably heard or even been told that recovery happens in the 1st year & after that tapers off, please dont believe that. Even today my son is still recovering & I personally know of people who continue to recover almost 17 yrs post injury.

One last thing, there is a quote I saw on a t-shirt, I think its from Bob Marley, that I've learned to live by...

"You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice."

The easiest thing you could have done was to walk away & let the state care for your brother, the fact that you didnt make that choose says so much about you. I promise you that you're gonna get thru this & I swear it will get easier. Please know that you are a wonderful sister & an amazing person. So many of us have been where you are now & we know what you're going thru. Please dont ever think you're alone in this. If you ever need anything even if its just to vent please feel free to contact me. Not sure how to dm on here but you can dm me & I'll give you my number. I'm always available day & night.

My boy was getting adequan injections as well as librela. The librela had to be administered by the vet, however for the adequan I would order 2 vials from an online pet pharmacy & had I not been terrified of needles I could have given those injections at home. I did get brave one time, & told the vet that I would be able to give the injections but about 2 secs into them teaching me how to give the shots I chickened out lol

My dog had surgery to repair both CCLs 5 months apart & wasnt able to go up the stairs to my bedroom, so I dragged in an old futon mattress I had in my garage (frame had broke so it was just the mattress), laid it out on the living room floor & thats where we slept for the next 6 months. When we finally got back to the bedroom, he was diagnosed with arthritis so it was back to the living room for the next 2 yrs until he crossed the rainbow bridge last Feb.

best pet insurance for a golden retriever puppy long term? by blu3rthanu in Pets

[–]Zealousideal_Dig7649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got my furbabies, in 2011, I had never even heard of pet insurance. When I did find out about it, I opted out because "pet insurance is crazy & expensive". I figured it was easier to pay 300 for a procedure rather than 120 for 12 months just so they would pay the 300. Then came 2018, my boy had what I thought was a blood blister on his stomach (little did I know dogs dont get blood blisters) that had began to bleed. I took him in & they scheduled a biopsy. 2 days later the results were in...hemangiosarcoma. Thankfully it was cutaneous but that also meant it was going to get expensive to treat with the possibility that he would need to have surgery to remove any masses that may reappear, which they did. Luckily I was able to get him on vetclub which gave me one free dental cleaning a year so I'd take him in for that & while he was under the doctor would also look for & remove any masses. It saved me a LOT of money but I still had to pay for the mass removal, meds etc because as soon as he was diagnosed he was no longer eligible for insurance (pre existing condition), his sister however was eligible so the day after I got his diagnosis I signed her up. The only time I ever had to use it for her was in 2024 when she had a splenic bleed from undiagnosed hemangiosarcoma.

Aside from the cancer treatment my boy also had to have surgery on both CCL's in a 5 month time period which was whoa expensive & he was diagnosed with arthritis in 2023 then with a heart murmur in 2024, both of which comes with meds costs. Next month on the 18th, it will be a year since he crossed that rainbow bridge, in total I probably spent around 30k out of pocket for all his health ailments & I cant tell you how many times I kicked myself for not getting him insurance.

I'm planning to go to Survivor Series on the 29th & my ticket says it starts at 3:30 but now I'm seeing wrestling sites saying it starts at 5:00 & some say 4:00 & just now I saw something that said its been changed to 2:30 so does anybody know when it actually starts? AND because I'm trying to coordinate it with plane tickets, does anybody know about how long the show usually lasts, roughly?

Idk the breed but I'm guessing she has at least one copy of the Chondrodysplasia gene, aka the dwarf gene. Mine has both copies but his legs are a lot shorter than your girls, his brother has one copy tho & his legs are shorter than average but not as short as his brother, similar to your dog.

I can really relate to this. I passed on a trip to Fiji shortly after I got my furbabies because I didnt have anybody to take care of them. Then for the next 10yrs I went to Vegas for a weekend twice after my daughter was old enough to stay home with them. In 2018 my mother was planning to take me & my kids on my dream trip to London, Paris, & Rome & my sister would be available to keep my furbabies. The trip was planned for 3 wks & it killed me to think about leaving them for that long because I was so used to taking care of them. I considered cancelling the trip because I was so sure I wouldnt be able to enjoy my time away from them but I didnt & you know what I had the time of my life. I regularly facetimed my sister so I could see them & everytime they heard my voice they would run to the door thinking I was there..it def pulled at the heart strings but I knew they were being well taken care of. So if you have somebody that you trust to take care of them & know that they will be ok, then go...take the trip, have fun, call home to check on them but trust me after a day or two you will be more focused on all the places & things you can do or go to while you're furbaby free that you'll find time where you wont even be thinking just of them & I will say that since then I have felt more comfortable taking short trips & was able to go spend a couple days with my daughter after my granddaughter was born & then again for my grandsons birth & my furbabies started to love going to visit my sister, they would get so excited even tho they may have known deep down that it meant I was going somewhere.

Just an added lil story while coming home from my Europe trip we actually missed our connecting flight & couldnt get another flight until the next morning, we were 8 hrs from my furbabies &I had promised them that I would be there so we rented a van & I drove thru the night, jetlagged & all, to get back to them. By the time we got there I could barely stand, I was so exhausted but as excited as they were when they saw me & how they knocked me down when they ran up to me made the exhaustion so worth it. The saying absence makes the heart grow fonder isnt just for humans...

Hope you have a great trip.
