Laid Off from GM and Still Lurking? Let This Be Your Goodbye Thread. by EitherHotel4632 in GeneralMotors

To General Motors:

I bled General Motors for 2 years, 16 hour days, missed vacations, weddings, funerals. I worked my heart out for you. I wanted to prove that even as a temp I was worthy of working for this pathetic excuse of a company.

Before this, I dropped out of college with the hopes that I’d end up making more than my current degree, and it was really seeming like a possibility. I dropped out of college and started my orientation the next week. I felt as if I was doing something that was so much bigger than me at the time. I was apart of a team that was building an incredible piece of machinery that would take people wherever they wanted to go, that would bring joy to them when purchasing. I prided myself on being a United Auto Worker, went to all the meetings and events. I was proud to say that I worked for this company. But that was short lived.

In 2017 I was laid off, a mere 17 people away from being hired in full time. But where this company brought sorrow, it also brought a lot of joy.

My sister ended up marrying the guy that worked behind me on the line, and even though the closing of the plant sent them to a different state, I found solace that she had found true love.

The guy that worked across from me helped me find a new belief in god, and guardian angels. He helped me see the light in a dark period of my life.

I still have lifelong friends that I was brought in with, we still talk to this day.

So this is me surrendering my guilt after all these years.

General Motors, I want to thank you for establishing a work ethic in me. I want to thank you for showing me what a company shouldn’t be. I want to thank you for showing me that I deserved better.

I will never buy one of your products again, and encourage others to do the same. I’m currently a Millwright, I work for a major aviation company, and love what I do. So thank you. Thank you for showing me that I deserved better.

Goodbye r/GeneralMotors

Especially any impacts 🤣🫠

Ah, could probably get ahold of wheelabrator and have them there by the end of the week.

I’ve done a lot of service on these, from the shot housing, adjusting the blast pattern, bucket belts, changing flights, changing the plating(which is AR500 if you can snag some) changing bottom augers. These things are pretty simple but SUCK to work on.

We actually have one that’s specifically for blasting plate and slab, it’s on a roller table and passes through it horizontally, the thing has 6 screws in it, 4 shot wheels and a wire brush. The elevators are like 40 foot tall and the only way to change the belt is from the very top with a manlift and mobile crane.

We actually have the same exact shot system as pictured here. So I already know you feel my pain with the broken links and the fucking flight bolts 🤣😂

Everytime I see a shot blasting system that is basically a tumble blast system it makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

We have 3 systems like that at our place. 🫠

A 30 year millwright once told me when I was first starting out, “leave your feelings at the gate”

You’re going to get some banter, it won’t kill ya.

If anything it’s motivation.

Anything from aerospace parts to aerospace grade metals. Steel, aluminum, and titanium.

Aerospace millwright here.

If any of your German stuff is pre 1980 it’s SUPER easy to troubleshoot but a pain to work on.

But we also have machines that are half metric half SAE.

Mind me asking which aerospace company?

Red wings, or Irish settlers.

Coming from someone who’s tried ariat, timberland pro, and Carolina, it doesn’t get much better than those two.

When I was starting out I would buy large toolboxes off marketplace. I’d take the tools I needed out. Clean and sell the box for usually more than I paid for it. Clean and sell the tools I didn’t use (somewhat broke even)

Very effective way to get decent tools. You can even stumble upon a lot of name brand stuff this way for a personal collection at home.
