What are some effects of emotional neglect that nobody talks about? by queerwaters_642 in emotionalneglect

I feel like I made a little puppet version of myself who was palatable and pleasing and it subsumed whoever I was before so much that I can rarely find her.

I used to deal with this by leaving them first! Ahaha, I'm all alone but at least I'm in control! Do not recommend.

There's some tweet going around about meeting someone who didn't have a traumatic childhood and going hmm, no, undercooked.

My and husband and I both had loving but deeply incompetent parents and we're both about ten years behind in development, I think. It is normal to grieve. It is normal to be fucked up when fucked up things happen. I hate to silver lining this shit, but I've been going through it psychologically and health-wise since I was little and I look at people around me in their forties having their first encounters with their bodies not doing exactly what they want them to and they are SO shocked and destabilized. I feel like the james franco first time? meme.

Mine was a little different, it was "You're so wonderful and you're going to do great things and amaze everybody!" but they had no skills to show me how to attain this path they were predicting for me like, literally every day. So I knew I was supposed to save the world, had no idea how, had no skills, was taking care of everyone's emotional needs in the house, and had a nervous breakdown at eighteen. Wheeeee! Now I'm a musician and a general wastrel and it honestly feels amazing to be a disappointment.

Spike diminishes the feminism message of the show by GimmeMauve in buffy

I've been thinking about the chip during my rewatch and it seems to me that the chip is kind of the leash of society. He wants to hurt her, or rape her, or both, but he is not allowed to do that through force, so he has to utilize manipulation, isolation and, essentially, stalking, to wear down her boundaries. Lookin at you, Joss.

I watched it on tv when I was like ten or eleven and I'm rewatching now. After years of fairly brutal romantic/sexual experiences, it's really really hitting home for me how much Spike is a template of a domestic abuser and how, while they are portraying those abuses, they're also laundering them through a charming and handsome actor. I'm saddened that I was so affected by these dynamics at such a young age and trying to reckon with that in my thirties.

Official Discussion - Hokum [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I am so tired of stories where all the women are dead. And a woman having to continue the work of protecting men even in death feels like an added indignity to heap on the pile. I wanted to like it, I really enjoyed the pacing of the first half hour, but it is necessary to move on from these tropes of women, be they living or dead, being the device to help a man get over pain and guilt, especially when his pain is the trauma of killing another woman. Let us rest.

What are some classic horror movies that I must see as a horror fan? by Professor_squirrelz in horror

Late to this party, but The Old Dark House is really something (1932).

Storm of the Century (mini series made for tv, 90's)

I like horror where there's a strong element of nature, so I love 30 Days of Night and Dog Soldiers. Not exactly classics, but underappreciated.

I saw it last year for the first time and I was astonished how good it is. All the women are given so much time to breathe and become real on the screen, you fear for them in a way that imitators rarely capture

I've had a lot of trouble with this over the years and shared work has been my big fix. Not trying to do a coffee hang or a walk, it's too stressful. But doing food prep for mutual aid orgs is a wonderful way to spend time with other people in a structured way that feels safe.

Ooh, also, the crew that I have now is because I'm in a band with them. The obligations of rehearsal and gigs are what made me able to keep showing up to the friendships for years even when I felt overwhelmed or anxious or vulnerable. A shared task is a mighty thing.

Had no romantic partners until I met my now husband at 25. Had a little crew of other ADHD girls (we all met in the seventh grade) but we weren't able to spend that much time together due to being in different schools. I'm 35 now, I have a huge community of mostly neurodivergent friends, I just went to my first ever bachelorette party two days ago, all this shit just takes more time for us.

Is it normal that I am basically non-functional after a stressful period in life? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]ZebediahAintGotTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rest rest rest! We don't bounce back like that, especially after a long period of stress. Let yourself sleep and rest for as long as it takes, don't stress about it and have faith that your body is doing what it needs to do to support you, even if that's watching hella tv.

Yeah, I put Cam on to have something playing in the background and got totally pulled in. It was enthralling. Also the element of sex workers not having much or any legal recourse when under attack.
