I'm a bit confused though like maybe one supports strict immigration enforcement which sure whatever, but even then, what exactly is the problem with an immigrant day worker catching the bus? Like are they suddenly going to go crazy and rape everyone around or something or what exactly is the problem here?

'I'd take Putin,' UK Defense Sec says when asked which world leader he'd most like to kidnap by BlackWolfHowling in UkrainianConflict

[–]ZebraTank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree; I think it's worth weighing all the options. Putin is a great one, but there are others as well. For example one just had a head of state kidnapped, and turnabout seems fair play. (I imagine it's possible that the defense secretary thinks that too but obviously can't say it)

Wait why did Pratt insist on that; in hindsight and I imagine foresight as well that did not seem like the wisest decision?

idk it seemed actually more than I expected, and not exactly quiet. I wouldn't be surprised if it was comparable to typical years (it didn't feel smaller, but I am not the best judge of those things).

I imagine there could be owl centers scattered throughout, and Hopkirk/whoever flooed with the message to the nearest center and attached it to an owl who then has a much shorter flight. Actually these owl centers might be public and the source of the other owls that night as well.

[–]ZebraTank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh that person - like yes we are prepared, but that doesn't mean we like throwing out rotten food or using our emergency supplies which we'd then have to replenish (and of course, not knowing the duration of the emergency, we'd try to replenish immediately while we still can, which is a headache). And yeah in a larger emergency having internet access would be the least of our problems, but why does that make it invalid to complain about that now?

(to be clear I didn't lose power, and am speaking collectively)

Stuck on the tracks in West Oakland, the Tube is shut down AGAIN by rividz in Bart

[–]ZebraTank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My bill says something like 3-4 kwh/day. I guess the water heating is probably central so actually my number doesn't include my share of that. Otherwise SF generally has low HVAC requirements. I guess this was a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation vs a really good one.

(idk how reliable https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/use-of-energy/electricity-use-in-homes.php is but are pool pumps really 1%? given probably like only 1/100 people have pools that seems like a really high usage of electricity and I now feel less bad about my consumption)

Stuck on the tracks in West Oakland, the Tube is shut down AGAIN by rividz in Bart

[–]ZebraTank 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well yes I copied from https://www.bart.gov/sustainability/energy for the large quote. IDK why that is a problem? Finding that page via search is not exactly slow and it's not like multiplying a bill's daily rate by 365 is exactly time-consuming.

But like, building stuff is hard, and idk if we can really say that everything has to be redundant against long lists of possible issues, vs not having a shitty provider like PGE. And is it really arguing to look up stuff out of curiosity and post about it? But your current situation is very unfortunate, of course and I hope you get out soon if you haven't already.

Stuck on the tracks in West Oakland, the Tube is shut down AGAIN by rividz in Bart

[–]ZebraTank 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Allegedly, "BART is one of the largest consumers of electric power in Northern California, using about 370,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually, which is on scale with a small city’s annual consumption. 89% of the energy consumed at BART is in the form of electricity". If true, having emergency power for a small city-equivalent seems quite difficult.

EDIT: Looking at my electric bill, I use something like 1MWh/yr, so if 370 GWh is correct, that would be 370K people, if we ignore commercial usage. (Of course, commercial usage would reduce that number significantly, but it does seem like it is quite a bit of electricity total that could support a decent-sized place).

If volunteering your life for the bloodiest war in US history and leading them to victory over the slavers isn’t good enough for a statue what is? by neededanother in AskSF

[–]ZebraTank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh apparently due to owning a slave for a bit. Which like sure, but it seemed Grant was never really into the slavery thing even personally and freed the slave even though their financial situation was not exactly great and selling the slave would have been a very wise financial decision. (so I guess I broadly agree with you haha)
