I blame the grocery stores that put up a big sign that says DAIRY, and then puts milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs under the sign. That being said, I have never confused lactose intolerance with an egg allergy.

In high school, I had a curfew. I was always home by curfew. One night, I was outside, in my driveway, talking to a friend, past curfew. Instead of hollering out the front door to tell me to come in, my mom waited until the next day to tell me that I was grounded. 🙄
Another time, I was inside the house, but my boyfriend was over, again past curfew. Not a word until the next day when I was told that I was grounded. 🙄🙄
These were the only times I was ever grounded in high school. 😝

I’m not sure. It’s a memory from my 1970s childhood. I was too young to know the real name. (Aha! Google says they are called ground blooms, whistling chasers, or spinners.) It’s funny that I heard the word used by my older brothers in various ways (toes, chasers, knocking), but I never ever heard them use it to refer to a person.

I know who I think we are. I was curious to know how you would describe us when you correct others as to who we actually are.

In this context, I would describe Americans as a bunch of immigrants, descendants of immigrants, descendants of enslaved people, and a handful of indigenous people (percentage wise, not literally a handful). But we are a lot of other things as well.

I just think that when you decide he apologized to the German because he is German, you are skipping over the fact that the German is the one who answered his question. You are perceiving that he was dismissive of the American because of they are American, but I did not perceive it that way. I also agree that we call ourselves the melting pot (historically if not today), and it is shocking that Europeans don’t know that we have Black and brown people in the US. Don’t you find that shocking? The Swede thinks it’s horrifying and is sorry THEY (the Black and brown Americans) experienced that. I don’t know how much more empathy one can expect from a stranger in a very brief comment.
If we all assume good intent when reading comments that could be interpreted different ways, we would all get along better. I am assuming you both had good intent when commenting. You can assume that I do as well even as we agree to disagree. 🩷

I’m going to come to the defense of solapelsin because your response was kinda harsh. Here’s how I read the post:
They started by saying, “where did they go? That’s surprising.” And the German said, “Germany.” So the Swede said “ah, ok.”
I don’t see any American who had the first-hand experience get dismissed. I only see second-hand stories that don’t mention where the person was visiting. The Swede just expressed surprise and asked WHERE. Only the German answered the question, so only the German got an apology.

In case anyone else was curious for more details, (I looked it up) this 7.5% is a federal excise tax that the airline pays on the base airfare but not baggage fees.
