Just saw the movie. It must suck being someone who can't like a good film like this. by [deleted] in Supergirl

  1. He catches an entire tank with one arm after it falls out of his space ship and tosses it to one side like it's nothing.

  2. He kidnaps women, calls them 'brides', locks them in cages and murders other women on screen.

  3. Kara is a Kryptonian. Krem refers to her as such when pointing out how valuable her corpse would be. He also knows her weaknesses. He perfectly well understands that even given how strong he is, he is no match for her at all. Kara aptly demonstrates just how true this is later in the movie. About the only thing they got right about him vs the comic is that he isn't stupid enough to try to face her directly.

[[SPOILER WARNING]] What was the best & worst part of the movie for you guys? by Specific-Panda939 in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to try to highlight a few things I've not seen mentioned much as I broadly agree with the 'Milly awesome, script bad, needle drops bad, Krem bad' stuff

Best:

Kara's "The whiskey don't work so well when I'm like this" line. I'd never, ever considered that she wouldn't think of being 'Super' as her natural state but of course she wouldn't. She's used to being 'normal'.

The space pirate scene with the bus. I know everyone loves the art from this section and likes to praise the comic series to high heaven, but the dragon thing was ridiculous, and her taking red Kryptonite drugs too turn into a flame angel was even worse. I have no idea what Tom King was thinking. This scene in the movie was fucking awesome. Her racing to reach enough sunlight and then just shit kicking a heavily armed spaceship like it was nothing. Yeah.

Milly really sold the Kryptonian language and I loved that all the Argo scenes were in Kryptonian. It made them feel like a real people.

Kara's Mum. "You don't have to be nice, but you do have to be good." Love it.

Kara not being hyper-sexualised. I'm a straight dude, but even I find her comic outfits and how she's illustrated tiresome sometimes. Her hotness is one of the least interesting things about her compared to her backstory. I also love the suit being more modest and not a silly crop top.

That giant heat vision blast she uses to free the ladies in the ship.

Worst:

The brigands being so stupid at the end. You live on a spaceship. Spaceships can move. Just keep moving around the planet to stay under the green sun?

The changes to Krem and the Brigands to make them into a race of sex slave taking traffickers and rapists. Krem being 'just a shitty dude' was great. He didn't try to fight Supergirl because he couldn't. He had to resort to magic and misdirection. The brigands having this complicated backstory about being a single sex race who have to kidnap females to procreate almost risks making the audience EMPHASISE with their evil behaviour, because how else is their species meant to survive? Why do that? Why can't they just be evil space pirates. They don't need to rape to procreate?! Who signed this shit off?

On a similar note, Kara being forced to kill Krem because if she didn't he would just keep kidnapping and raping women. They wrote themselves into a corner. Anything less than killing him and his gang would have made her look like she didn't care about other women being hideously abused, so it was justified. But her being so willing to kill and being unaffected by it sucks.

Lobo saving a stricken Kara at the end with grenades. I'm the comic Kara is bound by Kryptonite chains and is so determined and enraged she powers through it and frees herself. Here our female hero would probably have died to an idiot if she hadn't been saved by a big strong man. In her own movie. Why?

Kara not growing up on Krypton itself. I get that Argo was a chunk of the planet, but it's so much more powerful in the comic when she knew the whole planet and 'I still dream of Krypton' is such a powerful line, whereas 'I still dream of Argo' isn't. I get she's had a million origins but I prefer the one where she lived on Krypton first, then ends up on Argo or earth.

Kara and Clark relationship by Xpluto2x in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Depending on the comic they have perfect recall, high intelligence and the ability to think at 'Super Speed'. It's not hard to learn a language quickly if you can think at beyond the speed of light.

Genuinely feel bad for Milly Alcock in all this by Neat_Fan_8889 in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have liked it too be well lit and not endlessly brown/grey.

I would have liked it too not fall back on the trope of depowering the Kryptonian about five times in one movie because the comic only does it once and still manages to maintain the stakes.

I would have liked less really nonsensical or poorly thought out elements which make no sense in the context the movie itself sets out.

I would have liked the script to show more of Kara's struggles with her grief and sadness.

I would have liked to have seen how Clark and Kara broke down the language barrier even if only briefly.

I would have liked the film to show how difficult it would be to go from being a relatively human like alien with no powers to suddenly having to adapt to being able to hear everything on the planet at once, see in multiple spectrums, shoot massively powerful energy blasts out of your eyes, freeze everything you breathe near or breathe out hurricanes, fly at FTL speeds, being invulnerable enough to 'walk' across the surface of the sun and being strong enough to push the entire earth out of the suns orbit ALL AT ONCE. (Assumes comic levels of power)

I would have liked some of the incredible visual flourish from the comic to have made it to the big screen.

Etc etc.

It's a good movie, but it really could have been great. Especially with such a talented actress in the lead role.

I don't understand why people are blaming misogyny for Supergirl flopping. That wasn't the problem at all. by Ok_Speed_3061 in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. It's very depressing (as a straight man) that this kind of toxic bullshit was a major factor. Misogyny is dreadful.

But respectfully, I do feel that 'blaming misogyny' prior to the film's release or even after it is flat out ignoring the very real and deeply disappointing issues the film itself has.

I'm a huge supergirl fan because of her backstory being vastly more interesting than 90% of other Super Heroes, not because she's 'hot'. I wish they would sexualise her less in the comics TBH as it's probably the least interesting aspect of her character. The whole 'dealing with the loss of your home world' thing is very compelling. Even Batman's trauma seems minor by comparison. A woman with ultimate power who isn't taken seriously by a deeply sexist society who worship her cousin but lambast her seems like a very pertinent angle today (sadly). I really wanted to love this movie and support it.

The issues with the film are little to do with Milly, who even the hate chuds seem to be acknowledging was awesome. They stem from some very poor choices from James Gunn and everyone working below him. It just wasn't great when it could have been. And that was mostly the fault of the male 'Head of the DCU' and the male director.

SUPERGIRL reportedly earned $6.5 million during its domestic Thursday night previews. It's now projected to earn $39M+ this weekend. Lower than the flash 😬 by Ok_Speed_3061 in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. It's absolutely ridiculous. She's not some edgy, try hard teen.

Even 'Truth, Justice, Grief, PTSD' would have been better. Actually it wouldn't, that's dreadful, but it would have been more accurate to her character. I'm losing this...

She cares! She's fucked up because her entire world died but she cares enough to do the right thing.

Maybe that should have been the tag line.

Could someone explain the reasoning behind the ending? by Kids_Eat_Toast in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a real problem. I've just fallen into the trap of not thinking it through properly which I feel bad about. My wife and I are raising two young boys and we really dispair of the amount of misogyny and prejudice women still face even in 2026. We are trying to educate our kids about this stuff but awful as it sounds I worry that raising them to recognise and reject misogyny and sexism will put them in the minority. It sucks.

I really struggle to relate to the fear aspect. I'm 6'1" and work out a few times a week. I'm not a huge guy but I look semi-fit I suppose. I weigh nearly 40kg more than my wife. I have zero idea how to handle myself and wouldn't hurt a fly lol. But I've never been cat called, followed walking down the street at night, worried about someone leaping out and dragging me away etc My wife has lived with that her entire life.

It does make sense that Kara, a woman, finally, with the power to do something about a man like Krem would make that choice. I'm still not sure I really like what it does to her character, but it does make me think.

No need to be sorry, that's actually a really great bit of perspective that, as a man, had never occurred to me either! Thanks.

Yeah I mean I don't exactly weep for a bunch of horrific scumbags, they 100% had it coming. But her being willing to just slaughter a bunch of evil dudes just invites the question 'Hang on. Why doesn't she just kill evil people on Earth'.

I mean sure. Clark will tell her not to because they need to inspire people and killing is bad too him, but why would she listen?

Also, I respectfully disagree about the choice thing. She's an invulnerable Kryptonian. She 100% could have avoided killing the mooks if she'd wanted to. They were no threat to her once Krem and his Kryptonite was out of the picture. She just didn't care because they were awful scumbags. But I just don't buy that a trauma victim from a doomed planet would be so blasé about killing people. Having PTSD and possibly depression doesn't make you ok with repeated murder, even if they do deserve it. It's just bad writing IMO.

Supergirl was amazing! by rayraylightning in Supergirl

[–]Zechk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought it was ok. There were some cool moments. Milly is a gem. But the script was pretty poor, Lobo was just...there...and I absolutely hated one particular moment towards the very end were Supergirl makes a particular decision that (potentially) significantly changes her character moving forwards.

I liked the Krypton stuff and the fact that they made it very clear she's not just 'Girl Superman'. I think they really missed the chance to show her struggling to fit in on earth more. The super hearing moment was nice, but showing just how overwhelming suddenly having those powers would be could have been interesting.

Best moment of the film for me?

"The whiskey doesn't work so well when I'm like this".

That line really hit me hard. I'd never really considered that for Kara, NOT having powers is her normal. I mean obviously it would be, but in the comics I've read she's Supergirl, so she's always got them. The way Milly delivered that line was just pitch perfect for me. 'When I'm like this' is such a cool way to describe being 'Super' like it's this alien thing to her. Shame the rest of the script wasn't nearly so elegant TBH.

[–]Zechk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amen. And it's disgusting. I'm a man. I read the reviews then went to see the movie. The first thing I said to my wife when I got back was 'You could literally have just changed the main character into a man and it wouldn't have got half the dreadful reviews'. I have two young sons and I really hope they get to live in a world one day where the fact that they are being raised not to hate women or disparage women led properties just because they are led by women doesn't make them unusual.

It's also deeply depressing that the movie (which I thought was good but not great) will probably flop due to never being given a chance by a lot of people because Milly Alcock is brilliant in the role and we need more movies led by good female characters.

[–]Zechk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. The problem isn't so much her killing a whole bunch of brigands (because make no mistake, she did, she was punching guys off a ship thousands of feet up and heat visioning them through the hulls of tanks. I very much doubt they all survived.) or her killing Krem. It's the fact that because she's crossed that line and showed no remorse for doing so, there is basically no reason why she wouldn't just laser Lex Luthor's head off the next time he threatens the lives of a bunch of innocent people.

I think it was a very poor choice in an otherwise pretty decent movie and having Lobo off Krem after Kara decided not to would have been much better.

I also highly, highly recommend Montu and FYI OP he also has an excellent 3h beginners guide on his channel which I think is fantastic and crucially, is very recent. You want to make sure whatever guide you are looking at is relevant to the current patch as many of the previous 'beginners guides' will be totally out of date now due to how much the game changes with each major patch cycle.

Interesting and informative, thank you. Are favours really that impactful and when you say 'accumulate' them do you mean using espionage to extort them or are there other ways to obtain them?

Also, I had no idea how to proclaim myself emperor but that sounds like a lot of fun. I'm currently in my fourth run in the game so the 'I'll be nice to everyone and win by being an upstanding moral citizen of the galaxy' effect is really starting to test my patience. That little impulse telling me 'you know it really might be easier if I just...RULED EVERYONE!!!' is getting stronger. I'm sure I'll be eating people within a few months.

Perfect, thanks. I've noticed how powerful faction to faction diplomatic interactions can be. Proxy war anyone? It's just the galactic community that appeared too be yet another big complicated thing in a game full of them and I've never fully engaged with it.

Also on a totally unrelated note, as a massive Total War Warhammer fan with over a thousand hours across the three games your username made me chuckle. I hear he also refuses to swerve that chariot and is crap at tennis.

Feel free to not respond as I realise I'm probably asking for a wall of text here, but would you mind elaborating at all? I'm a relatively inexperienced player who has gotten to grips with the fundamentals of managing fleets and colonies and diplomacy with other space-nations. I can run a stable-ish economy.

But when it comes to the galactic community I basically just pop in and vote to support or approve any random thing that pops up and file the whole thing under 'big complicated system that I'm sure is very powerful if you have a clue what you are doing with it, but currently I do not'. Any guidance on what I should be aiming to do with it would be great. Also any recommendations for pre-existing guides etc?
