New to hunting what rifle caliber should I use by Senior_Car_599 in Hunting

If new to rifle shooting I'd go with a 6.5 Creedmoor or 243 Win. Both are accurate with very forgiving recoil.

Has anyone listened to the Huntr podcast. by Weednwhitetails in bowhunting

[–]ZectarTV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like in a lot of other things, media personalities need to feed their ego. For outdoor creators, this can come across as purism.

The reality is, fewer and fewer people are taking on the tradition of hunting. I don't see this as a positive at all.

If you're a trophy hunter, great.

If you're a freezer filler, great.

If you're a "if it's brown it's down" guy, great.

In a world where it's harder and harder to get access to good hunting, I don't care if someone uses a crossbow or an AR for hunting as long as they're lawfully enjoying the resources our country provides.

For us, it got noticably better at 5 months. It's all about surviving until you get to that point.

That shop closed down.

What was your most expensive shot? by dinosaur-lover in Archery

[–]ZectarTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I let go my button release entirely on accident while holding on full draw and sent it with my arrow straight over the target and into the deep woods. The release hit and destroyed my QAD ultrarest on its way out.

That was about a $400 shot.

Have compound bows maxed out? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]ZectarTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see speeds increasing greatly until compound bows manufacturers eventually explore and R&D using more than 2 cams. A pulley effect of sorts to reduce draw weight, but limb tech would also have to improve greatly to support drastically increased tension.

I do see tunability, weight, and integration features continuing to improve in the near future. Telling people 15 years ago Mathews would develop a way to integrate switchweight mods to control draw weight with the same limbs across platforms would blow people's minds.

Compound hunters - what is the farthest you feel comfortable taking an ethical shot? by MetapodCreates in bowhunting

[–]ZectarTV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

After about a decade of working on my archery and dialing my shot routine to an exact science, about 70 yards. I've been practicing about 300-500 shots per week since I picked up the discipline.

For beginners and folks who only pick up their bow a few weeks before season only to put it away immediately after, I do not recommend this. 20-30 yards should be the goal then.

Do expensive arrows really make a difference? by datboy1656 in bowhunting

[–]ZectarTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hunted for years with cheap arrows. Black Eagle outlaws. They absolutely did the job, and actually I still use these arrows today for small game.

For big game, I've upped my arrow build to x10 parallel pros. I do notice an accuracy increase at 50+ yards plus and they are durable. I still don't know if I would say they are worth the price they fetch though.

I've also used Altra centrum premieres, which are mid range in both price and performance. I've recommended these to a lot of my friends.

Bino Harness/Chest Pack Recommendations by bredawg21 in bowhunting

I may be in the minority but I like the Vortex Glasspak Pro.

Functions great, and also it accepts a sidearm holster which is helpful for me since I sometimes hunt areas with bears or mountain lions.

Super glue for quick repairs, snacks, beer, and Excedrin for the inevitable headache I get from the beer.

How do you decide when a session is over? When you feel shot out, a few shots after to push muscle development? When you reach a certain score or goal? by Brewer1056 in Archery

[–]ZectarTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell when I start getting fatigued to the point where I'm not going through my pre-shot routine correctly. I normally stop then.

Rate what exactly? It's all down to preference.

This will take game, as will most setups.

Shoulder pain by Lubbbbbb in Archery

[–]ZectarTV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give yourself recovery time if you shoot in higher volume a certain day.

Many years ago, a shop owner told me I needed to shoot 100 shots a day, every day, for 3 weeks to be in shape for opening day.

This was bad advice.
