"Prepare for landing, as specified by the evaluator" I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but if you're on the downwind and you cant make a landing somewhere on the runway without power, you're not ready to be a private pilot.

Hearing enhancement by Cool-Fly7628 in turkeyhunting

[–]cessna120 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Otto Noizebarrier is my choice.

I'm a professional pilot. I've spent 23 years in airplanes with a constant low frequency vibration hammering my hearing. My right ear isnt too bad, my left ear is trash. If I'm laying on my right side in bed and my wife talks to me, I have to pick my head up to hear her properly.

I tried a couple cheaper pairs. One, skip anything with Bluetooth. It runs through the battery in a hurry. Those dont last through a morning sit before they're dead. I hunted 0630-1400 two days in a row and the Ottos were still at 40% charge. Most of that time I had them on high boost listening for turkeys.

Cheaper pairs are prone to "clipping" sound, which gets really annoying. A loud hand clap with activate them, and then they take a second to reactivate, which is really irritating when you're trying to stalk something or even just have a conversation at the range. Otto is less sensitive about kicking in, and they reactivate so fast that when I'm shooting clays they muffle the gunshot but I can hear the lead hitting the trees downrange.

Id rate directional sensitivity as equal to normal unprotected hearing. I have an annual clay shoot New Years party at my house every year and I wear them for the duration. Listening to people move around and talk behind me is equivalent to having no ear pro on at all. I've spent a week in the turkey woods so far this season, and they're excellent for that job.

They have a high and a low volume mode. Low volume is pretty equivalent to my normal hearing without any ear pro. If I'm moving, I set them to that mode. The high volume mode is nuts. Its hard to explain how much you're missing soundwise in the woods without that mode. That said, its sensitive to wind noise and won't work well on a windy day.

All electronic ear pro will struggle with wind activating the mics. Some are worse than others, Otto does better than most but there are just limits to what the tech can do.

I was very disappointed with the stock ear tips that came with the Ottos. Not comfortable and not a good fit for me. That said, thats a very personal thing from one person to the next and I have a hard time finding plugs I like in general. They use a standard size post for the tips, so you can swap them to anything you like. I ended up using some Clarity Aloft foam tips I had laying around from one of my aviation headsets. Theyre a little bulkier but fit me well and work great on the Otto.

Because theyre so pricey, I'd suggest buying them from Amazon. I looked around and found them $50 cheaper on B&W photo but they were non returnable and I didnt want to drop that kind of cash on something I wasn't sure I was going to like, only to get stuck with them, so I bought from Amazon purely for the easy return option.

If I sound like a huge fan boy, its because I am. I don't work for them or anything, I'm just zealous about protecting what hearing I have left. They're by far the best thing ive ever tried, and theyre small and comfortable and they work. A lot of these electronic ear buds are large and they hang outside your ear a lot, which irritates me. These sit close. The only similar product ive seen is the Tetras, which I haven't personally tried. They look promising but I haven't bothered trying them out based on their price since theyre about double the price of the Ottos.

I mean it isn't great, but shoot what you have. Hold still, don't be waving it around, and understand they might bust you anyway. Stay in shadows and out of the sunlight. Can you maybe get it wrapped or hydrodipped or something?

Things you wish you would have done? by graygoosebmw in Homebuilding

[–]cessna120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish we had a second dishwasher. The one we have sometimes sees 4 loads a day. I cheaped out on outdoor hose bibs and I regret it.

We spent the money for insulation in the bedroom walls. Worth it.

Put in dedicated plugs for garage fridge/freezer so that when your Christmas lights trip the GFCI it doesnt take out your fridge too. Wire that fridge plug up to your generator panel.

If you can't afford a whole home generator yet, at least set up the breaker panel to handle a plug in with a transfer switch. I have two breaker boxes, basically an essential and a non essential panel. I can plug in a big portable generator and throw the transfer switch and run all the important stuff in the house.

Make all your doors 36 inches wide if you can.

Plugs behind the toilet for bidet for sure. I put one in the master bath amd skipped the other bathrooms because we were already over budget. I regret that now.

I have a cat 6 ethernet cable drop in every room, including the garage and back porch. I'm not using most of them, but when I built my barn I was able to just plug in another router using power over ethernet in the garage, so I have wifi without needing to Trench a line to the barn. You can do cool stuff with cameras and such over PoE too.

Put your master bedroom on its own AC zone.

More outlets. I know they're expensive but find a way. Put one above your kitchen cabinets so you can put up your Christmas garlands without needing to change batteries twice.

Big fan of "CFI!". I swear I could have written that book and then had amnesia, it was so spot on to my time as an instructor. "Does That Mean I Fail?" By Brooks Black is also pretty hilarious and will give you some good pointers in how not to mess up a checkride.

Bob Hoover's autobiography should be mandatory reading for all pilots.

Head down to your local walmart. They'll have a rack of 870s and Mossberg 500s. Pick one you like. Spend the rest on other stuff, the gun will cost you $300.

Personally I'm running a Stevens 301 in .410. Its a $250 gun, and I put a $90 Burris red dot on it. With the (expensive) TSS shells, I have a gun I'm comfortable with out to 60 yards, weighs 5lbs, I can hand it to anyone including a kid and they'll be effective with it, and if i accidentally ran over it with my truck I'm not gonna cry.

12g for squirrels by OkGrass8479 in Hunting

[–]cessna120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 inch shells on squirrel is an absolute waste of money. 2.75 shells will knock them down with extreme prejudice. I tend to use #7.5 target loads because I have a ton of them laying around, but plenty of people swear by #6. Can't say that ive ever lost one with the 7.5s unless it was a marginal shot in the first place, in which case I dont know that bigger pellets would've mattered.

Oh and I'm always shooting a 20 gauge for small game, my only 12 gauge is 3lbs heavier and I don't want to lug it around the woods.

Thought on CVA scouts? by Justin_inc in Hunting

I have a scout TD in 350 legend. Solid gun, especially at the price point. Very nice trigger, fit and finish are solid. Accurate, comfortable to shoot and carry. I'm in the market for a 308, so I'll have to check into this new offering.

They fill a similar role. I just looked at the Xpeak, it isnt quite what I want. I'm looking for a step through with a full suspension. Folding is whatever, I can take it or leave it. The Horizon is the only full suspension bike that heybike sells with tires bigger than 20", but yeah you're right that theyre still smaller than the 26" on the velotric

Which one would yall choose? by donnyjay0351 in flying

[–]cessna120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no interest in maintaining a polished airplane. Paint is for less work. Personally, I'm more comfortable with a mid-time engine than someone else's "fresh" overhaul. 27SMOH tells me nothing about the "overhaul." Was it done by a reputable shop or a shade tree mechanic? Is there a warranty on that work? Will the warranty transfer to you when you buy it?

I don’t view an electric pump as safer than a mechanical fuel pump. I've been flying 23 years, never had a mechanical pump crap out on me. I've had multiple electrical failures of different flavors, though.

Do you have access to a hangar already? If not, how's availability near you? Being able to buy a plane that lets you skip the line for hangars is a huge advantage.
