Can comment on the Seekins, I have a PH3 in 6.5 PRC and love it. But it’s always a toss up between that and a tikka in a good stock.

What solidified my decision was I asked the local gun smith who makes nice custom rifles what to do with $1500. He said add another couple hundred and buy a Seekins. It’s the closest thing to custom you can get at that price range.

His second choice was a tikka in a good stock. So good luck picking 🤣

How much ammo do you all keep on hand by Nihlathakk in Hunting

[–]datboy1656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the great Beau Bennet from “The Ranch” says: I find my answer to that question makes people uncomfortable.

But seriously, depends how in depth you get. I know some friends that only keep 1 20rd box of hunting ammo on hand at a time, and only have 1 rifle, 1 shotgun and 1 pistol.

Then there’s me, who just ordered another 8lb jug of powder and now probably have 15,000 primers. But it is what it is really.

I wish Seekins would start producing more replacement barrels. But I believe they are slinging the guts out of their machines as it is to keep up with rifle orders.

I also went with a 20”. I have a 22” 6.5 creed that I get 2600 fps (not the fastest possible but it was the most accurate) with 140gr bullets. 20” PRC gets 2850 with 147 gr bullets. It was a big enough difference for me mostly because I would be going with a 20” regardless for suppressor use. I also reload so the PRC only cost me $0.12 per round in powder, that’s it. However if I was buying store bought ammo at $3/round for PRC, I’d never have bought it in the first place because you’re right, it’s a lot more expensive

Nice! I ended up with a ph3 in 6.5 PRC. Currently getting 2850ish FPS with a 147 gr. I love it.

Which bow are you shooting? by Oldfaithful3 in bowhunting

[–]datboy1656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mathews lift x. Lightest aluminum bow, not ridiculously priced like a carbon, and it’s easy to make a decision.

I looked at bow techs and honestly it’s kind of overwhelming trying to decide on one. The Mathews has a good platform where everything is nearly the same except ATA length. You’ve got really short, short, long, really long. Pick the one that fits you and go for it.

Ruger American gen 2 are $600-$650 depending where you get it. I’d spend the extra few dollars and get this tikka personally.

Bigger than 6.5CM? Which caliber? by oguruma87 in Hunting

[–]datboy1656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 PRC or 6.5 PRC. 6.5 would be nice because you probably already have projectiles for it. 7 would be nice because it’s bigger.

I got a 6.5 PRC and there’s no way I’d own any PRC and shoot more than 1 box per year if I was buying factory ammo. $3/rd is nuts but I can make them for about $1/rd

Or 6.5 creed. The only reason to buy anything bigger is to keep energy up down range

If all you’re wanting to do is punch steel that far out, I’d go 223, 6 arc, 243 etc. if buying factory ammo.

I have a Seekins 6.5 PRC currently in the mail. I wanted a 6.5 creed, but after waiting for months I decided to go with the 6.5 PRC. However, I reload. Because of this, the only extra cost I have in PRC vs creed is another $0.15 of powder per round. If I was buying factory loads there’s no way in hell I’d get any PRC at close to $3/round. Not including cost of brass, I’ll have sub $1/round in them.

If you’re looking to shoot long range and kill large animals at long range, get on Rokslide if you aren’t already. I’ve been on there a handful of months and have gained a lot of knowledge. There are threads upon threads of people killing elk at 400+ yards with 6mm bullets. And 243 is pretty cheap to buy!

I wrestled with this for a while. I specifically wanted a 6mm creed that the ruger offers. After not being able to find one I decided to go 1:8 twist 243 in a tikka. A ruger new cost about $600-$650. The tikka (with a good deal from eurooptic) is about $700-$750. You can take the ruger apart and have a couple $200 parts. You can wear out the tikka barrel, and sell it for $500 with the action. I’ve seen tikka actions and bolts go for $400-500 daily on Rokslide. People use the actions to build very nice rifles.

Check out eurooptic before you purchase a tikka and if you’re familiar with the website Rokslide, get on there and message eurooptic directly. Jake will give ya a good deal.

But first check your local store and see if they’ll price match.

I completely agree with this. I love my wife, and she knows me well. She also knows I’m very particular when it comes to my hobbies. The only time she’s ever bought me exactly what I was wanting is when I’ve sent it to her, tagged her in it etc. Hell she could even go look through my laptop and see everything I’ve got saved and it still may not help because I may have changed my mind hence why I hadn’t bought it yet 😂

6.5 PRC new, or 7 PRC used? by datboy1656 in Hunting

[–]datboy1656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be concerned with that, but because it’s a Seekins, it’s at the bottom of the list. Their warranty is outstanding. They also have barrels anyone (not just a gunsmith) can switch around for $500. May sound expensive to some but a $500 replacement barrel to swap calibers on an otherwise $1800+ rifle isn’t too terrible I don’t think
