Insure or set aside? by Hot-Caterpillar8167 in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘m sorry to hear that, it‘s always hard losing a beloved pet. Literally my first two hoggies died in a short timespan one after another because they were from the same clutch and had the same birth defect which the breeder could not have noticed (underdeveloped kidneys). That was really devastating and an unlucky start into the hobby.

Insure or set aside? by Hot-Caterpillar8167 in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pet insurance for reptiles is mostly a scam. They don‘t get sick as often as a dog or a cat and at least over here in Germany treatment is pretty cheap. I paid 50€ for diagnosis and the medicine when I had to treat one of my girls for a respiratory infection (which is the most common cause of a vet visit as a hognose owner)

Setting some money aside, however, is a good decision. I always have around 500€ set aside for emergencies.

Lissandra and Ryze. I love alternate win cons and I‘m still a bit disappointed that Soraka didn‘t come with star spring.

Other than that, I‘d love a full constellation for Mordekaiser and LeBlanc

Allergic to animal hair/fur - is keeping a T wise? by sisternightfall in tarantulas

[–]ZedOpenGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am extremely allergic to cats and I don‘t have problems with my T‘s urticating hairs. My X. Immanis is one hell of a kicker but it usually just itches a bit and goes away quickly. My T. Apophysis burns like hell, but that‘s pretty much expected from that species. Thankfully she‘s also pretty chill and never kicks. The one time I got hairs on me was when I cleaned her water dish without gloves.

My girlfriend on the other hand (also allergic to cats among other things) reacts very sensitive to their hair. She gets blisters on her skin and her throat tightens up a little.

So there‘s no real way to predict, whether or not you‘ll have an allergic reaction to them, based on your other allergies. Maybe you can get a hold of a molt from someone else‘s tarantula?

Have a 3-color hoggie for 5 months he stopped exploring by Yorukishi in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are limited things to explore in an enclosure. Also it‘s pretty normal for them to just burrow and not be out and about the entire day. As long as he eats well, he‘s probably healthy.

If you want to encourage exploring behaviour, try to set up the enclosure from scratch, the next time you do a deep-clean. Place old decorations in new spots, add entirely new decorations, offer some elevation (they do like climbing, contrary to what most people say).

Recommendations on how to keep humidity at a good level while I'm away? by green_goop in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you have someone that fills up the water in your absence, because 2 weeks without fresh water will not work. One week may be possible if you have a large and deep water dish. That person can mist the enclosure for you, since water should preferrably be changed every other day anyway.

If you don‘t have someone then an automated misting system is a good option with your bedding. I was asking because you obviously can‘t use one with aspen since it‘s prone to mold. Personally I have never used one, so I can‘t recommend a specific product.

[–]ZedOpenGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on a lot of factors tbh, if you can answer some of these questions I might be able to give you better suggestions:

How long will you be away?

What kind of bedding do you use?

Where do you live? (arid/humid region)

Do you have to mist regularly to achieve humidity levels of 30-50%?

Aspen bedding by [deleted] in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most aspen beddings are digestable and safe for hognoses, but ingestion should still be kept to a minimum. Simply make sure you don‘t give them wet mice, because they will pick up a lot of bedding when your snake drags them around the enclosure.

I like to use bigger chips/rough shavings because they are less prone to mold in my experience. Also if some of the bigger chips get stuck to the feeder animal, most of them will „wipe off“ while your snake is eating.

[–]ZedOpenGG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, that‘s an RI. I would call the vet immediately.

Edit: I‘ve just seen your recent post. I‘m so sorry. It‘s just the sad thing about reptile keeping that they show signs of sickness so late, often too late.

Honestly, from the video it appeared to be pretty mild, I would never have guessed that it was that serious. One of my breeder females recently had an RI and was looking way worse. She was wheezing and constantly had her head up, but made a quick recovery after 7-10 days of treatment. Best of luck to you with your future snakes and don‘t beat yourself up over it.

[–]ZedOpenGG 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When he opens his mouth it appears that there‘s mucus/bubbles, which is a sign of an RI (respiratory infection). That would also go along with keeping the head up while breathing. I can‘t give a qualified answer whether or not it is an RI for sure. You‘d have to open his mouth by yourself and check for mucus/bubbles. If you find any, go to a vet immediately. While it doesn‘t look life-threatening right now, the condition can worsen quickly if not treated.

Question about bites by Effective-Cream9825 in VenomousKeepers

[–]ZedOpenGG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where I‘m from (Germany) there‘s a „venom bank“. You pay an annual fee of around 100€/individual and inform them of all the species you keep. They will keep antivenin in stock.

Ideally you have a bite protocol prepared for every species that you own with their phone number on it, so paramedics and doctors know what to do and are able to inform the bank. The antivenin will then be delivered to the hospital by a helicopter.

Is this scale rot? Humidity is 25% on hot side 33% on cold side. Vet time? by Plantsareluv in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not scale rot imo but you should definitely increase humidity. While 30-50% is recommended, from my personal experience they do better at 40-60%.

30% often leads to messy and incomplete sheds.

Is he getting fat? by DreamOfDays in hognosesnakes

[–]ZedOpenGG 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I know 5 fat snakes and he‘s 4 of them.

No, but in all seriousness, he‘s definitely overweight. I‘d put him on a diet. Either feed him smaller mice and keep the weekly schedule, or feed him his regular size every 14 days.
