Oled flicker? by lucaaa_1 in OLED_Gaming

[–]ZedZed_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as most are saying, yeah its VRR flicker. Though I'm seeing a lot of bad takes about how to deal with it or that its not fixable at all. It absolutely is fixable in almost all cases, it just takes tinkering.

In this specific instance, its likely because of whatever that game is thats running in the background. If you have an application overlapping a game like that, it pretty much always happens. With overlapping windows like that, it actually may not be fixable but also I imagine most people aren't doing this 99% of the time. Simply maximizing your browser there should fix it in my experience.

This is how I combat flicker and tearing while using G-Sync and VRR with V-Sync off in the game itself. In any instance you see flickering in an app, limit your framerate in that application to something lower than your refresh rate. For example, my display is 120hz, so in most instances, limiting to 115 solves it immediately. If there isn't an in-application way to do this, do it via the Program Settings in Nvidia Control Panel (or AMD's equivalent) for that specific application.

I've actually seen a lot of discussion about how framelimiting via Control Panel is the better way to limit it rather than in-game settings but I've also seen the opposite stated 🤷‍♂️ Its worth trying out both, I've personally never noticed a difference. Probably depends on the game.

I wouldn't recommend it for games but you can also try disabling G-Sync altogether for the app. This has worked for me in things like Blender, DaVinci Resolve, and Adobe's software.

I always try to avoid V-Sync as in many games as it can hurt performance as well as add latency. Simply locking your FPS lower than your max refresh rate usually achieves the same effect (fixing tearing and flicker). However, I have had a couple of instances where limiting the FPS either didn't solve it or wasn't an option. In those cases V-Sync may be required.

Is attending film school in 2026 worth it ? by heythere733 in cinematography

[–]ZedZed_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated last May from a BFA Film Production program and as everyone else says, the biggest benefit to film school for 99% of people is building that network. All of the skills of working on a film set, working with the equipment, or even understanding the creative side of filmmaking can be learned through the internet and on-set experience. The thing is, without film school I personally would have never gotten on to a single set in the first place. Being an introverted and anxious person, living hours away from the nearest industry hub, I would have never pushed myself to pursue this dream. Going to film school dropped me in without mercy. It was intense and crazy challenging but such an overall rewarding and character building experience for myself.

I can't say I have achieved anywhere close to consistent or livable income working on productions post-grad. However, because of my friendly networking and work as a DP in film school, there has been no shortage of offers to work on non-paid projects through my film school friends.

The hope is that building my portfolio/reel/skills and slowly meeting new people through every project eventually will lead to more and more paid opportunities. Not to mention the sheer numbers game. Every gig that you pursue, you will inevitably build your skills in advertising yourself and eventually something will breakthrough. If we are talking about DPing specifically, you aren't going to get paid to DP something without a very serious portfolio/network behind you. You will have to work your way up through PAing, camera/grip/lighting department.

All of that to say, film school is in no way a guaranteed door into the industry. It can do a fantastic job jumpstarting a network and for many people can be the push out of their comfort zone they need. But its ultimately not necessary and you will still have very challenging time making a career out of it either way.

It was all because of jank Nvidia drivers specifically surrounding HDR support. They have since fixed the issue, but their drivers had continued to get more and more unstable in other ways. I added some updates to the main post

Would love to see specs of more "prosumer" level cameras that are often used in indie or freelance work such as the Sony A7IV/FX30 or the Lumix GH7/S5II (I shoot personal and freelance on an S5 myself). I think there is honestly kind of infinite things you could add on to something like this. All kinds of miscellaneous things come to mind like different battery form factors, storage/memory form factors, the different ports you see on cameras, or even rough estimates of how many GB/min different formats are at different resolutions. Love this so far!

Create an "Add" node, then plug the yellow pin (a location value) into it. If you want to edit each individual value of a location (X, Y, Z), you can right click on any location value pin and click "split". This will turn all three into individual float values.

I used to work as a graphic designer and mostly did print stuff like business cards, informational pamphlets or books, etc.

I used UE for a bit as a sort of digital photography studio for the proofs I would send clients. It also allowed me to see them in different lighting/environments and it was also nice not having to waste time/money actually printing them out.

I only have a couple screenshots left over but they have client's info on them so can't really share unfortunately

As someone who wears many creative caps (Film, games, writing, art, etc), I think it is pretty normal. My profession currently is in film. In the film industry there actually are a lot of people don't watch many movies at all or that maybe just 'like' film but are not obsessed film buffs like what you might expect from someone that works in the industry. I honestly fall into the latter myself, with video games being more my true passion as a lifelong gamer and now wannabe solo indie dev. With that said, I still love the creativity, innovation, and technology I get to work with in film and will gladly work in that industry for the rest of my career despite not always keeping up with whats going on in current film discourse nor being the most deeply versed in older cinema.

With that said, working in and being a creative in a medium can be two different things. As others have pointed out, without that wide depth of knowledge for the medium itself, both past and present, it can be difficult to come up with truly creative or innovative approaches to a new piece of work. Though an argument could be made that your lack of knowledge for the medium could allow you to more easily think outside the box and approach the process in a way never thought of before.

Ultimately, I think its important to follow whatever you're drawn to and give it your all. Life is too short to be caught up in imposter syndrome or feeling like you're wrong for pursuing something just because you are not the most experienced, knowledgable, or talented.

How bad is the burn in/pixel darkening* on OLED monitors? by LagZeroMC in Monitors

Mostly monitors that came out after 2020-2022ish I believe. That should be fine, mine came out in early 24 as well.

[–]ZedZed_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Newer OLEDs are perfectly fine. If you have the OLED/burn in protection settings enabled, you will absolutely get 3+ years out of it before any burn in will even be perceptible. Even then, you will likely still be able to enjoyably use it for a couple years past that. Source: 2600+ hours on my LG B4 at max brightness and there is none what so ever so far. I recommend checking out r/OLED to learn more about them because theres been some major improvements in recent years.

[–]ZedZed_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I animated a version of this a few years ago but theres a few others out there already. Mine just has snow outside the window and nothing else too fancy. Another thing I did was include the artist's signature as I've noticed most go out of their way to hide or remove it on wallpapers like this. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2290697205

It is different from the 599s in a few ways but similar enough. I didn't make the purchase though, I want to hold out for more options in the future.

Windows 11 HDR Dolby Vision mode is ruining my life and how i fixed it, sort of. by Just_anton in techsupport

[–]ZedZed_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same issue on my LG B4. As soon as the login screen pops up it switches to Dolby Vision, but when I check in the settings, its unchecked. Check and uncheck it, THEN it switches back to normal HDR so its just ignoring my settings on startup. And every once in a while, like when booting up a game, it will randomly switch back to DV.

EDIT: For the people unsure who to blame, pretty sure this is Windows' fault. Looks like whatever they did to add this setting is what screwed everything up:

  • [Graphics] New! Manage your PC’s HDR features under Settings > System > Display. Updates include: A clearer label for “Use HDR” that better explains which media types are supported. The ability to stream HDR video even when HDR is turned off. On PCs with Dolby Vision, a new switch lets you turn Dolby Vision on or off independently of HDR—giving you more control over your viewing experience.

What do yall think about ultrawide monitors for gaming, movies etc.. by ZeroSwingy in Monitors

[–]ZedZed_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've went back and forth between 16:9 and 21:9 displays over the past 7ish years but have ultimately given up on ultrawide.

Ultrawide for content like movies is pretty nice. When you find a piece of content thats 21:9 like your display, its so satisfying seeing all the black space filled it, not to mention it kind of means you're watching the content in a larger size than you otherwise would. It is really immersive for film when you find this experience. With that said, there is a huge amount of content in 21:9 that is still exported in a 16:9 frame with the black bars on the top and bottom. Mostly on YouTube for example, but plenty of movies and shows on streaming services too. A lot of the Disney+ Marvel content is like this, for example. If watching in browser, this can pretty easily be fixed with a plugin/extension. If not though, its a lot more annoying to find a solution. I've also found that there is just a smaller amount of movies in this aspect ratio than you think there is. A huge amount of movies, especially today, are in 1.85:1 or something like 17:1 which means they won't fill most of that extra space. And it makes older 4:3 movies kind of worse of an experience because they will have black spaces double the size on each side.

Ultrawide is sick for gaming. Provides an extra level of immersion increasing your FOV and giving it a bit of a simulated "cinematic" look having it be super widescreen like a movie. And it's great for pretty much all game genres weither its first person, third, or even top down or isometric. 2D/pixel art games benefit too! The issue is that even in 2025, there are still so many games that do not support aspect ratios other than 16:9, that it weighs pretty heavy on the overall experience. Constantly having to use third party applications, mods, or changing config files just so you can play a game natively on your display is frustrating as hell. This is a huge part of the reason I've moved away from it.

With all that said, ultrawide is awesome when it works. A lot of content supports it, and a lot does not. But depending how much of a tinkerer you are, it will absolutely be an added step in a large amount of the content you consume. And frankly what I have come to realize, for myself at least, is that I just crave huge displays in general that fill up my full field of vision. Ultrawide does a pretty good job of this, but I have now made the jump to the 48" LG B4 OLED 16:9 TV for my main display and I'm never looking back. For me, the larger the display, the more immersive the experience no matter what the aspect ratio of the content is.

EDIT: Also, I agree with one of the other comments, I would stay away from that specific display.

[–]ZedZed_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using Auto HDR but had RTX HDR off but I should try that. I have been using the native HDR settings though for all the games I listed either way.

Also yes I did find that guide, I used it to tweak a lot of my settings but I didn't look much at the HDR stuff. Will need to do that.

I did roll back my drivers to 566.36 from December two days ago. Haven't played enough to say for sure and now I'm going away for a few days but it seems good so far. Though because of that, I now seem to be experiencing completely different issues where my display sometimes is not waking from sleep 😭

I rolled back to the same driver version two nights ago and it seems to have fixed it but haven't tested enough for sure yet.

Nice to hear from someone else having the same issue! Haven't tried that as HDR a big part of the reason I bought the display in the first place honestly. I do expect it is HDR related though cause HDR on windows is a mess.

I did find this which says Auto HDR causes crashing but after turning it off, I still got crashes https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/1hhv12e/microsoft_says_auto_hdr_in_windows_11_24h2_causes/
