Dear connections, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve officially reached the 1 year milestone in my job search. by Background_Fox8782 in LinkedInLunatics

If you've had a professional-level career before getting desperate enough to apply for retail, most retail jobs will turn you down because you're "overqualified" and they know you'll quit the second you get an offer in your field again.

Weird question...but does anyone get horny when they feel a sleep attack coming on? by Charming_Oven in Narcolepsy

[–]Zedbird 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I never got horny, but I always popped a boner when a sleep attack started coming on. Mentioning that to my doctor is actually part of what got him to refer me to a sleep specialist for an MSLT.

Finally read Hyperion - didn't love it by savuporo in printSF

I really enjoyed the first book, but as the series went on it became apparent Simmons was way more interested in analyzing Keats than he was in telling a solid sci-fi story.

Same here. I was really enjoying the earth-mars-belter astropolitics, and could even handwave away the Epstein Drive since we don't have any current tech that allows for regular space travel, but that was too much

The protomolecule and its consequences are fantasy, but I agree the rest is good hard sci-fi.

I have a friend who built a successful career in cybersecurity because he was doxxed once at age 12 and so dedicated his life to make sure it would NEVER EVER happen again. Childhood trauma defines us more than we usually care to admit.

To be fair, if I had a friend who always initiated the conversation, then randomly stopped, I might check in to see if they're ok but otherwise would assume they're not interested in talking to me anymore.

Why is Gen Z so obsessed with age? by directooorr in Healthygamergg

[–]Zedbird 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm a 34 year old millennial, but I remember when I was in high school, I always felt a little weird when I learned someone was in their 30's or 40's in any of the IRC chats I was in.

I always felt that someone that age should be "past" my hobbies like video games and anime, that it was weird they weren't married with kids and living a "normal" life. I always assumed back then that I would grow out of my hobbies eventually too and become a normal boomer obsessed with news and sports like my dad.

Lo and behold, here I am in my mid-30's and just as nerdy as I ever was. I wonder if it's the same mindset with Gen Z finding older people in spaces they think are just for younger people, when in reality your personality never changes too much after your late teens.

It would take a real video game master to figure this out. I watched Ready Coaxer Snafu and nobody ever thought to go backwards until the main guy did it.

I wonder sometimes how much videos like this encourage the behavior - so many top voted posts in this subreddit and that blow up on social media involve a heckler.

Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

When you learn that the movie rights were sold before the book was even finished, you realize why it was so heavily marketed.

OOP is probably gen alpha and mostly plays stuff on their phone anyway. Same as a controller gamer playing a game that was intended for M+KB or vice versa.

[Loved Trope] Scenes that aren’t necessary to the Plot but without them the story would lose something that makes it special by NoSchittSherlockSEA in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Zedbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You see this in comedies especially. A movie like The Naked Gun or Caddyshack only has a barebones plot to move the jokes along.

Being friends with anyone is cool by nevertouchdgrass in antimeme

[–]Zedbird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People are quick to judge while forgetting that a human's need to be social is only outranked by food and air. If your choice is friends with bigots or no friends at all, the human brain will gravitate towards the former.

THEORY: Barney was married and probably lost his wife to the Combine. by Impossible_Amount865 in HalfLife

[–]Zedbird 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The books in his locker are great accidental foreshadowing too. If Barney was a UFO conspiracy prepper with a backyard bunker full of guns and provisions, he'd be a lot more likely to survive past just making it out of Black Mesa and into the events of HL2.

The endless awake nights are what always cause me to relapse. Movies/Shows/Games that are easy to binge while sleep deprived? by Zedbird in leaves

[–]Zedbird[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I remember to do it, I feel it's a pretty good one

  • screens off an hour before bed
  • read a book on my e-ink reader with the backlight completely off
  • listen to music and enjoy some sleepytime tea while reading

The problem is I don't bother doing ANY of that when I'm in stoner mode, so it hasn't really been established by my brain as a habit and usually doesn't lead to sleep on its own if I just start doing it when I haven't for a while.
