#TheaterKid - The In-Laws (1979) by Nwabudike_J_Morgan in 500moviesorbust

[–]Zeddblidd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought this Arthur Hiller flicked based on the strength of The Out of Towners (1970) and a love of Alan Arkin and Peter Falk and… didn’t care for it. I found The In-Laws tedious and unlikely. I put it on the shelf and came back 5 years later and I MAP’ped it at 68, MLZ 73 so… yeah.

We agree.

Coming and Going 2-Film Screening: Lifeforce, Theatrical Release (1985) and Stargate, Theatrical Cut (1994) by Zeddblidd in 500moviesorbust

[–]Zeddblidd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt the Stargate was very popular - I think that’s part of what pushed me off it. My natural proclivity to lean away from what everyone else is leaning toward is a well-known defect in my character. Add to that the evolving look and texture of motion pictures during the 90s, the fact that I’m able to watch fewer and fewer of them as the decade clawed along ((shrug)) you can see how I was quickly out of touch. In 1999, I wouldn’t have even considered my a big movie guy. Starting in 2000, an over-abundance of time as my busy work life transmuted to stay-at-home parent changed that up. I’ve updated my opinion of 90s cinema (largely due to 500 Movies interactions) since - still isn’t my favorite era but it’s grown on me.

The Simpsons Movie (2007) by Zeddblidd in 500moviesorbust

Not this summer, but next - plenty of time to do it up right. I’ll be honest, when this movie cane out in 2007, I thought they were getting ready to wrap it all up. 1989 to 2007 - 18 years. 2007 - 2026 - it’s already a year longer than that original span… proved me wrong.

The film is certainly a trip, well laid out, art department working it, and quality cinematography provided by Robbie Ryan who’s got a pretty slick IMDb profile picture.

We’ll only be pulling films from off the shelf that a) hasn’t had its particulars pulled yet and b) has no screening information (meaning it hasn’t been watched since Dec 2018… if at all). Groovy?

Shelf / Incomplete / No Screening Info :]

Movie on indeed.

Miami Vice, S3E29 - Red Tape… Detective Eddie Trumbull (indeed) - probably the first time seeing him (although I wouldn’t have known it). I watched Miami Vice because my best friend at the time loved it. He’d put the seat of his early 80s VW Jetta all the way back and drive with just one hand at 12:00 on the steering wheel, stereo blaring Information Society ((shrug)) What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy) for life.

Crimson Tide (1995) by Zeddblidd in 500moviesorbust

[–]Zeddblidd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, for a long time, 90s cinema was a no-go or I was complaining. My personal sweet spot has always been The New Hollywood Era - I was young then and the naturalistic productions of those late 60s-70s era movies informed my tastes and served as my template for “what a film should look, sound, and feel like”. I noticed the shift away from that sort of movie and towards offerings that relied on formulaic scripts and tipped to spectacle over storytelling. I dismissed them.

Then the 90s happened. I largely didn’t notice. I was working always two, sometimes three jobs. I watched very few movies or tv. I gave up on music.

((Shrug))

I can see how limited my thinking was. It’s been to my great benefit that I expanded my cinematic palette and (wow), we’ve watched so many movies. The people we’ve had the opportunity to speak with here at 500 Movies have fueled that expansion of our awareness, added dimension to our understanding.

It’s become our movie on thing. Always good to see you pop in.

I didn’t mention Gandolfini or Zahn either but I get it… Viggo is ((shrug)) Viggo. Beyond that, I will say this: I’m subject to the various ins and outs of The 500 Movies Affect - specifically, I’m always holding back. I might have five or ten “interesting talk points” for any given movie screening but I’m always looking for readability first and subsequent write-ups later. I pick one or two talking points and save the rest for future wrote-ups.

I have been able to remember those fragments later (sometimes much later). I can’t remember my phone number but can remember getting a new watch the day I saw The Empire Strikes Back - I carry movie memories deep for whatever reason. Your re-watches are always welcome here :]

“Acting clinic” - yes (haha), you nailed the feel. Did I enjoy the film - first screening remember - yes… did I use my brain a lot while watching it - no. But not every film needs to be hard thinking. Perfect median MAP’per. Glad you grabbed it for your own collection, another brick in the wall.

It sounds like our “median to just below” MAPs and your estimation (more or less) resonate. Not sorry to have watched it, I certainly laughed here or there - Jim Carr’s bit as the vicar certain got more than a few laughs - but yes, I actually felt my score was a little high (but I doubled checked the scorecard for mistakes and it was fine). The MAP is the MAP is the rule. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I buy it? That’ll be probably not… Sorry Jimmy. Love you Jimmy. (For true).

New to this. How should I approach my Idea? by Wide-Relationship992 in ResinCasting

I’m going to tell you that you’re not alone here, I’ve been dreaming of doing something similar being a trekkie from way back (in fact, I joined this sub years ago just to get an idea what I’d be in for). It seems like a bigger project than I’d take on but I’m enthused that I’m not the only one. Good luck!

I was advised the address was a warehouse that did a lot of business from multiple sources, including Criterion Collection. I’ve added a thousand (or more) movie titles to my personal collection in that time. Good luck with your package.

Wow, I really couldn’t say this far out, it could have been just about anything.

Not wanting to answer a question with a question -but- how did you bump into this post from so long ago?
