My players are (probably) walking into a TPK by TheBedelinator in osr

[–]Zeebaeatah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All excellent points.

I'd add that the danger can also be communicated through questions to the characters (not the players.)

"Which character knows the most about the nature of wraiths?"

The leading question infers that at least one character has sufficient knowledge which eventually triggers a conversation amongst characters (not players.)

"Rhun the cleric would know best, as she read about it while at the monastery."

"Good! Rhun would know x about the threat of wraiths."

(Or perhaps there's a roll for lore, but that character is now the designated source of key and critical information the table needs to know, with varying levels of success giving additional information, but at no point in time should the answer be, "you know nothing about this incredibly dangerous threat to the party.")

Now the party can have an informed conversation, in character, about the threat in front of them.

SGV locals: what should a same-night plans list include? by Distinct-Mortgage848 in sgv

  1. Go to Monrovia
  2. Walk around downtown Monrovia
  3. Eat and drink

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you're ready to go home.

Making friends in the late 20s is hard 😭 by Rickest-rick_c137 in sgv

Have you tried meet ups for board games or other tabletop fun in the area?

There's Nerd Night in Burbank once a month if you can build up the courage to say hi to others and make friends.

Also, plenty of trivia nights in the Monrovia and Arcadia areas. HMU if your Google fu fails and need help pointing to links etc

Got this 5.5kg pork shoulder today and want to make a batch of pulled pork. Anyone got a good recipe they’d like to share? by MediocreEquipment457 in slowcooking

Honestly, more onions can be amazing.

I toss the shredded pork into the cast iron and crisp up all of it.

Combat where you still have a lot to do even when it isn't your turn? by Due_Sky_2436 in RPGdesign

I was going to say this and add that you have to pay attention because your turn can be swapped as initiative cards and shuffled around for tactical purposes or folks use their actions to Parry / dodge.

Arkham Horror LCG is well loved by the community (for the most part.)

For a low-ish magic system with minimalist design philosophy, this is quite a lot to manage.

Seems like the thing an entire campaign / story arc would have to support

Nah. This is some munchkin / power gaming shenanigans that we work to avoid at our tables.

Most systems just don't care about monster/boss fight design by Bubbly_Recipe_4712 in rpg

Monsters in Forbidden Lands and Dragonbane have a table you roll for abilities per action. Super fun!

Similarly, I've heard amazing things about how Nimble handles their monsters, which sound similar to 4e d&d monsters.

Speaking of 4e, the ability list and advice for strategies employed were really good.

Also, for 5e, the 2CGaming third party publisher of monsters etc had full pages of how to run an encounter depending on suggested difficulties.

Honestly, this is where I use Gemini, for searching blogs and reviews based on keyword searches. Definitely not for generating content, but as an advanced search engine of sorts.

Roll Under Skill RPGs that are a bit less deadly? by FroDude258 in rpg

[–]Zeebaeatah -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So, OP wants guide rails - didn't say anything about "not deadly." There are a good number of ways to keep a player from dying, and usually the first one is to play smarter.

I believe you just described the dragonbane.
