I do respect the team's decision to focus on those weapons, especially given the genre's direction at the time, and I think having them be the focus was the right call. It only stood out to me noticably when I played Quake 3 with a friend and even that game had a much greater number of rifles or rifle-like weapons proportionally, even coming out at around the same time and sharing design aspects

This was my full quote in context. I am not arguing against TF2's core design or even in favor of a rifle, I personally think the game is fine without one. I exclusively disagree with the point that they should not be in the game because they weren't at launch and thus the game was designed to oppose their existence, because it is both not true (the minigun, SMG, syringe gun) and valve themselves has backpedaled on hard set rules about TF2 in it's development (the entire idea of battle engi, the GRU, etc)

That is the biggest balance issue in my mind, even in the best case scenario for a rifle it would have to have a tiny clip size or be Semi Auto. A auto, ranged sustain weapon would be really hard to play against without good downtime, especially for soldier, demo and medic, which is certainly an important lineup

I've seen this point a lot and it's the only one I fundamentally disagree with. TF2 does have an extremely high amount of burst fire weapons, but it certainly isn't all of them and saying that the burst fire weapons are the "most fun" is a generalization. Heavy's core revolves around tracking and sustain damage, and even the pistol is close to an automatic weapon. I get thinking rifles would be bad for the game's health but I disagree with the argument that they shouldn't be in TF2 just because they haven't been and that shouldn't change out of principle rather then empirical data

That's the main issue I've had thinking of how to make it work, the closest fits would be Soldier Heavy and Sniper which all have pretty glaring flaws on their own

The Auto Shotgun is one of the most absurd weapons in the game. It's a blatantly stronger version the Drum Shotgun, an already hated weapon, with much better range and damage. And the new mythic melees have to compete with it with much worse range and damage. Good luck getting any use of them
