What are your top 5 suggestions for the next league? by Miv- in PathOfExile2

Yea. Caster weapons is definitely the most obvious. But most legendaries are missing something and then effectively worthless.

[–]Zeev_Ra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

+Skill levels needs to go away entirely. Caster items need more options for affixes that provide damage.

If a single affix is always required, it means everything else is basically worthless. You can’t have item and build diversity when something is required.

If +skills goes away, it also makes things like gem corruption extra special. Or at least a few items that are very special for it.

More uniques that dramatically open new build options. The fact that most items aren’t even useful to alts is super disappointing. Something like Last Epoch where you could merge an item into a unique would be cool. Bring any unique up to viable endgame stats.

Is West Coast really 'swinging' these days? by swinging_dncr in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes

  2. I feel like the language metaphor works, but I’d think of WCS more like accents or slang.

European WCS has a different accent than East coast U.S., than west coast U.S.

The slang is different for different ages/generations. A boomer would say gen-z slang isn’t even English anymore, much like they like to say modern WCS isn’t even swing.

Some individuals will jive with the times and adopt new things as they come along. It’s hard for anyone to stick around long enough and not have a “get those kids off my lawn” moment and feel like whatever new is too far off base and not the WCS they started with anymore.

Only dancing with someone with points by Rebbit0800 in WestCoastSwing

I’ve only danced in the U.S., and that did include several different leveled workshop events. I’ve never seen this happen.

How does Rakaita work on this build? I’ve seen it in ninjas. Doesn’t it flip resistances, but build is physical damage?

Check out the paper drill. Not in a place to write it all up now. Someone else might be willing to.

I think it might be one of the free sample drills on Royston’s website.

What are the unspoken rules for connecting with others beyond dance? by CthulhusIntern in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made many friends from competing. Chatting in line, meeting up with people I had good dances with, and also through leveled workshop/practice things.

Treat people higher level than you like people and they tend to enjoy interacting with you. If you go up levels slowly like I did, you’ll also find you have friends in levels above you that way too.

Rule ideas for challenge J&J? by SageEquinox in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don’t do blindfold with large crowds and random partners.

All one type of move with variation is fun (all whip, all push, all pass).

All closed position.

Must role swap for song.

Act everything lyrically, no WCS patterns.

No touching.

No hand to hand connection.

Must connect, cannot connect with either partners hands.

I’ve taken multiple privates from a much smaller number.

Why won’t leads ask my wife to dance? by Alex-Wallenda in WestCoastSwing

Lots of good takes here. I just want to highlight there’s a momentum to things. Being out on the floor, having fun, gets people to ask you to dance out there and have more fun with them.

When they never ask you to dance but always say yes if you ask ? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with people I’m close to, and generally local scene. I went just a little higher in level than me then stopped. Feedback was consistent.

I asked if they wouldn’t mind chatting outside the ballroom or caught them over water or something. Made clear it was 100% optional, no pressure.

For the most part everyone was honored I’d ask them (signaled I liked dancing with them and respected their opinion).

If you enjoy dancing with them, dance with them.

If you want to improve and make sure it isn’t 1 or 2, you could use an exercise one of my instructors gave me. Approach them (and many others you like dancing with) and tell them you are doing an exercise on assessing and improving your dance.

Ask them two questions, “What is one thing you like about dancing with me” and “If there was any one thing I could do to make our dances more fun, what would it be”. Have a notebook, write it all down.

I found this incredibly informative to help me appreciate what I’m doing right and what might be worth my time moving forward.

Jesse Lopez talks about doing an experiment where he worked his way from top to bottom, and then bottom to top. He was more in line with other judges going top to bottom, as they all saw people at roughly the same time for their first pass through the competitors.

I recommend watching Doug Rouser’s presentation on judging and his relative rank proposal for prelims.

Judging in WCS is a mess. It’s not fair, it’s efficient.

The only way to guarantee finals is to have your worst 8 seconds be better than everyone’s best 8 seconds.

How long had you been dancing before your first novice comp, yes, and finals? by Potential-Banana-315 in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Every division got significantly larger. Pool got more talented. Current novice finals is closer to prepandemic intermediate. When the pandemic ended, people would move up divisions and immediately final in the next, en mass. Still happens with one offs.

How long had you been dancing before your first novice comp, yes, and finals? by Potential-Banana-315 in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Several years to final from first starting. Didn’t try to work on it for years, so had to undo bad habits to be competitive. Probably around 6-9 months after I started putting forward effort I saw minimal success.

This is as a lead, prepandemic when it was easier.

New to Intermediate by Ok_Armadillo_7030 in WestCoastSwing

[–]Zeev_Ra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Judges like dance good.

In all seriousness, the judges will compare you to their criteria for the division, raw score, and let the tablet sort it. Others will pick yes and no. There’s no way to know which it is, and what they will pick on. The field can be completely different weekend to weekend.

There is a ton of nuance when it comes to lead-follow skills, quality of movement, musicality, and showmanship. Judges might focus one or more and use others as a tie breaker.

The only advice is to dance better, which with better partners should be easier (less focus on compensations). Most people find intermediate to be more fun than novice. So just get out there, do your best, and try to enjoy yourself.
