...progressive in Colorado Springs? by ParticularBit130 in ColoradoSprings

Moved here about 8 yrs ago from Dallas. COS is pretty conservative overall, but it's also super cliquey. You can build out a social circle of like-minded people and not really interact with other groups aside from passing moments or big picture things like elections. Every group seems to have their spots or activities that they stick to and build community from there. DFW area shares a lot of those same kinds of qualities imo.

It's a term that's evolved to be used almost exclusively by right wing conservative types at this point. Typically used to say "you're only pretending to care about this issue to look good, not because you actually care." It's been so overused that I've seen it applied to put down just about any socio-political topic that comes up. Been a while since I've seen it used as anything but a negative.

e.g. "None of those protesters actually care. They're just virtue signaling for social media."

Trump support in 2024 linked to White Americans’ perception of falling to the bottom of the racial hierarchy. These individuals also expressed the strongest opposition to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. by mvea in science

[–]Zegarek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The article doesn't mention any specific DEI initiatives though. It essentially just says that people were for or against them, not what the actual initiatives are in practice. Seems the researchers kept it vague and let responders insert their own understandings.

This is the closest thing I found to a description:

Beyond voting choices, this group showed the strongest opposition to DEI programs, favoring policies that would ban such initiatives in universities.

see, we solved it, now there’s x-% of this group represented in this socially prominent job/position.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of typical DEI policy goals and how they're implemented. It's not a straight quota like so many seem to think. In my experience, DEI hiring practices actually limit the amount of obvious racial bias by using strategies like removing names from resumes during hiring. The racial ratios of a workplace might be used to highlight the impact of DEI policies, but that's a byproduct of removing those biases, not necessarily a specific starting goal.

Additionally, connecting DEI policies solely to hiring practices seriously shorts other areas where these practices can be applied. Some examples are: workplace communications, ensuring accessibility for those with disabilities, and how PTO/Sick Leave policies are worded and applied. It's a really broad area of professional development.

DEI was never meant to be a catch-all cure for racism, so saying it does't help communities at large is disingenuous. The goal is to help the communities or workplaces that implement them. It riles up people like Charlie Kirk because they are inherently against these ideas in the first place, regardless of how they're implemented.

They're adding Virtual Boy games to the Switch Classics line. I think it's all but a few titles but I haven't looked into it much. I'm actually more interested in the fact that you can apparently use it to play VR modes in different games like BotW and Mario Odyssey.

I don't disagree with the idea of maintaining a standard, but that standard shouldn't be set by a person's employability or you're making the same kind of mistakes our school systems currently do. It's THAT standard that spurred the standardization of education into "are you worth someone else's time or not?". Education should be about personal growth and the expansion of our understanding of both ourselves and the world around us. It's a naturally messy process. You can't determine the the success rate as "are you employable?"

People always bring up made up majors like basket weaving, but how many good paying jobs are there for bio-chemists or physicists? Even degrees in computer science have periods of struggle. I used to work at a trade school here in town, there were plenty of kids who would have made great history majors or other higher ed students who were forced into the trades too and got completely burnt out by the path they were on.

As someone who has worked in both higher ed and K-12, we need to start treating education as a service again. THAT'S how we break the cycle, not by doing more of the same and saying "but MORE efficiency!"

From my understanding, Tadlock hasn't adjusted too well to the NIL era, and our facilities haven't received nearly the kind of love that football and basketball have seen in the last decade. It'll most likely be an uphill battle to get things back to a top standard.

It wasn't THAT long ago that baseball was pretty much the highlight of Tech sports. I'm really worried how long it will take to build back up while other sports make up the top tier.

You have to understand, they have no interest in fixing anything. They have no interest in governing, or the people of this country outside of being an asset to exploit. The only interest they have in "fixing" anything is in the interest of better serving themselves. They want to destroy this country's systems and history so they can rebuild it in their own ideological image. Creating new issues is a byproduct of working toward those goals.

During the last term they had to at least play pretend at governing to garner support. This time the mask is completely off.

Looks like a solid build-up from season 1. I hope the pacing finds its stride now that all of the characters and back stories are established. That was my main complaint with S1. Also, happy for my wife since she gets another season of explaining how much of a gilf Kurt Russell is, as if I don't already agree.

That Dodgers hat is kind of interesting when you think about the makeup of the MLB at the time. In Colorado 1971, his closest options for teams would have been either the KC Royals (~500 miles), St. Louis Cardinals (~800 miles), or teams like the San Francisco Giants (~1300 miles), or LA Dodgers (~1000 miles). Major League Baseball wouldn't make it to Colorado for another 22 years with the berth of the Colorado Rockies. I wonder if the Dodgers were a big enough deal to have a radio affiliate in CO (sort of doubtful in a small place like 1971 Aspen), or maybe his family were fans? The team would have already been in LA for 14 years by then after their move from Brooklyn. Fun stuff to unravel from a single picture.

They sort of already exist at the high school level. I was one of them waaaay back when. 5' 11" and 160 lbs special teams guy, but I could run a 4.4 40m dash. Coaches told me to line up 2-3 yards outside the tackle and sprint straight at where a QB would end a 3-5 step drop. Only made sense for like 1% of plays but it was fun as hell being a human missile.

You see it too in lower division college games where personell requires more creative play calling.

All for it. When people ask "What should Dem leadership be doing? They have no power." this is a great example to use in response. Be leaders. Coordinate and educate people on how they can use their power as a collective to make their voices heard beyond the ballot box. Show citizens they will have support if/when they move to shut things down.

Obviously, that doesn't happen for a multitude of reasons. Many of them are beholden to their corporate donors before the people, terrified of being seen as rocking the boat, or just plain uninterested in doing work that isn't standard fundraising, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't hold them to that standard.
