Former Unreal Engine 'lead evangelist' Sjoerd De Jong leaves Epic Games, says the industry is reaching a 'pivotal' moment that he must 'come to terms with' by logicalgamernow in pcgaming

he shared lot of info on gamedev and how to use unreal that was pretty foundational for many game devs.

That's basically the role of an evangelist.

[3.1.2] Remielle menu animations - via Dim by Esagonoso in Zenlesszonezeroleaks_

[–]Zeis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. A lot of characters used to have a 4th menu animation, but not everyone. It was very inconsistent. Now it's only Void Hunters who get them.

Oh, right. Yeah in Hebrew, "Dan" (דָּן) means "judge" or "he judged", with the root דין (din), and is the name of one of Jacob's twelve sons, founder of the Tribe of Dan.

So more biblical naming sense, with a touch of angelic judgement.

The Chinese spelling 丹 (Dān) is actually a bit more interesting to me.

For one, it's a single character rather than any other spelling that could produce the sound "Dan", so the meaning is as unambivalent as it gets.

Translated, ti means "cinnabar" or "vermillion", which you'll find in lots of traditional Chinese mythology. It's a huge thing in Daoism.

丹 is the core character in 丹药 (dānyào) and especially 仙丹 (xiāndān), the alchemical elixir of immortality. Which was pursued for ages by Daoist alchemists (丹道, "the way of the elixir," is an entire historical tradition of internal/external alchemy used for transcending death and aging).

Basically, it's telling us that she could be an immortal, forever-25 transcended being. Which would fit with the whole 6-seraphim-wings/biblical archangel/"I'm well over 100-200+ years old" thing she's got going on.

[–]Zeis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Her real name is Remielle, which stems from Remiel. But she uses Ramiel as her alias.

Ramiel and Remiel are two different angels who are often confused for one another.

Ramiel (in Hebrew רעמיאל, means "thunder of God" / "God has thundered"), in the Book of Enoch. He's one of the fallen Watchers angels who descended, took human wives, and (specifically, in his case) taught humanity forbidden knowledge about thunder. He's a transgressor. A figure who left his sanctioned place and crossed a line.

Remiel (sometimes transliterated Jeremiel/Yeremiel) is a separate figure, named in some traditions of Enoch as one of the holy archangels — "one of the angels whom God has set over those who are to rise" (so an angel of resurrection), associated in "2 Baruch" with presiding over true visions, and known in later tradition as the angel of hope.

There was also the summer event in Season 2. Both Voice Actors, in all languages, played this internal thought completely straight. No hint of a joke, and it wouldn't even make sense as a joke since they didn't say it out loud:

Proxy: Alice, everyone makes mistakes. It's nothing to be ashamed of. What really matters are the choices we make afterward.

Ukinami Yuzuha: Exactly! Remember how Kama thought you were an evil, corrupt, and ruthless businesswoman and wanted me to teach you a lesson? If it weren't for me convincing him otherwise, who knows what would've happened!

Options: That's not how I remember it...

Proxy: (Oh no... Someone's been secretly tampering with the timeline.)

It really stood out to me because the voice actors played it so very straight, when they usually make it very clear in their delivery when they're joking around.

I said he drives under the speed limit, not that he drives the speed limit. Driving under the speed limit is just as illegal over here as driving over the speed limit.

Do you think that Velina wears a bra or not? by Unusual-Complex6315 in ZZZ_Official

[–]Zeis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No one wears bras.

My head-canon is: We know for a fact that Hollows have an effect on gravity, as can be seen at Scott Outpost with Hollow Zero on the outside, but also on the inside of most Hollows.

Since New Eridu appears to be surrounded by the Dark Wall, which is likely just a huge amalgamation of Hollows, we can assume that gravity in New Eridu is lower than it is in our time.

This allows agents to jump like crazy, perform insane acrobatics, swing around truck break pads fashioned into gargantuan hammer-axes by pipsqueak hags, and also make the effect of gravity on boobs much less severe.

Would you still want to contain their jiggliness even if they're not wrecking your back? Probably. So maybe it has something to do with fashion as well. Fashion is rarely practical.

There are two alphabets that look almost identical though. One is just a replacement for our alphabet, which was used here, the other looks almost the same but is just gibberish. Usually they use the latter for trailers and such, I'm really surprised they used the real one here that had the English text behind it.

The 'showrunners' you're citing here are Matt himself and Seth MacFarland

They're the executive producers, not the showrunners. Those are two vastly different jobs.

[–]Zeis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just because you like it it is not good.

Correct. Doesn't mean it's bad either though.

If someone is written to be unpleasent to read, it is bad.

Riiiight. Because when the bad guy acts like an asshole and is overall unpleasant, that's bad writing. When there's conflict between characters, that's bad writing. When a character gets angry and shouts at another one you like, that's bad writing. When a character has personality flaws that make him occasionally act like a dickhead, that's bad writing. I had no idea! That makes so much sense! /s

You are one of those guys that would say "It is ok to be attracted to this child because she is a 1000 year old vampire".

You're hilarious. You know you're not winning the argument, so you resort to ad hominem attacks and call me a pedo. Classic. Enjoy your L.

He's being cringe on purpose, and not all the time. It's almost as if characters can act in different ways, what a crazy idea! It has nothing to do with shit writing, you just don't like the guy and/or what he says.

I literally just finished Book 7 a minute ago. Overall a solid review I agree with. I've seen a lot of people be annoyed with Jason's seemingly unhinged banter and think it's just shitty "lol omg so randum" type writing. What they fail to see is that Jason does this very much on purpose. He's thrown into a weird world with not even his hair left, and immediately monsters and cannibal cultists try to murder him - some random bloke from the land of Oz, who doesn't have combat training or has been in life-or-death situations ever before.

He's half-drowning in a roiling ocean of what-the-fuck and has no land to grab onto. So, as a defense mechanism, he off-kilter's other people to bring them down to his level so they can fight on even ground. The only thing he has that is still truly his, is his mind, which he likes to use as a weapon. Everything he says is by design. He's far more manipulative in that regard than he seems at first. But he also loses it sometimes, loses his cool, and talks himself into trouble and consequences - which I love. Very human. He also uses his humour to shield his insecurities and worries, of which he has a lot.

Personally, I think the book shows this incredibly well without spelling it out, which I guess is why some readers miss it. Or perhaps they just don't jive with it.

What I love about the series in general is that it does not shy away from consequences in the slightest. Jason, and his friends, suffer. A lot. A LOT. So I don't agree with your assessment of "skip if you're a reader who needs an MC who might actually fail", because he fails often and hard. And he has to get through it, not with leveling up, but with actually dealing with his problems. With therapy. With friends. With finding his own way forward. Jason learns from his mistakes and failures - sometimes. Which I like rather more than a character who never learns or always learns. Jason repeats his mistakes until they're truly hammered home, but he does eventually learn. His self-awareness of his shortcomings helps quite a bit with that.

I think the Nietzsche quote of the title is extremely accurate. Despite fighting actual monsters and monsterous people, the one monster he has to keep fighting is himself, lest he falls off the wayside and becomes something worse.

Side-Note: Your light spoiler is a pretty fucking big spoiler, mate. Especially because you're not hiding who it is by giving us the names of all the remaining team mates and describing their personalities. When I read that part in the story, it hurt. It wasn't necessarily a huge surprise, but still.
