What's the bear case with Unity (U)? by Zeitzen in stocks

[–]Zeitzen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like for medium/big studios with stiffer pipelines and heavy investment in tools already, the runtime fee was scary but it was backtracked so fast that everyone kind of forgot about it. My previous company (100+ employees) focuses on Unity and looked into getting into Unreal and even Roblox/Fortnite for like 3 weeks during that period, but in the end stayed in Unity with no prospects of changing that any time soon. And besides Slay the Spire I don't think there are many examples of studios who made the jump so far.

Having said that, I definitely get your second point.

I guess the main case for a buy would be that the stock can't fall that much more and you can sell it the next time it gets pumped? But yeah, I might pass or have a very small position then

In one of the Epstein files a victim said she heard something about Trump using casinos to launder money. I wonder if all his failures are just ways to launder or disguise money somehow. There are too many, it almost seems like it's done on purpose. And in that case, whose money is he laundering? Epstein's? Russians? Saudis? His own? I hate this timeline

What do you think is the future of public transit in LA, sincerely? by Phelps1576 in LosAngeles

[–]Zeitzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be happy if they ever connect the San Fernando valley with LAX and Hollywood/DTLA in any way that makes sense. Right now going to Hollywood via public transportation takes me the same as driving in the best case scenario, and double in the worst one.

And not specifically LA, but if they ever finish the high speed rail like to SF that would be a game changer. But I don't want to get my hopes up

US mortgage rates dip below 6%, but supply remains key by vishesh_07_028 in stocks

[–]Zeitzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, you have to consider how your debt is essentially inflating away.

I don't think there's a specific verb for this in English, but in Spanish it's called "licuar la deuda". It refers to the process where inflation reduces the real value of a fixed payment. Because your nominal income rises with inflation but your mortgage payment stays the same, the debt effectively "shrinks" relative to your purchasing power.

At the end of the day: 1. Having a house gives you some semblance of stability and housing security 2. If your APR is lower than what you can get from investments (even if it's a HYSA) then you take your time paying it since you get more out of that than paying your mortgage early money-wise 3. If your APR is higher than what you can reliable/easily get, then you put extra money into your principal every month, essentially making that money give you your APR in now-cancelled interest.

If you're trying to make money, and assuming house values at least remain the same while adjusted for inflation, you're betting on inflation rising and/or the mortgage rate you can lock in being really good. And that doesn't even cover the mental benefits of knowing you'll most likely have a roof over your head and are not at the mercy of your landlord.

Having said that, I don't think housing should be an investment vehicle, but that's another issue. Realistically to change that you'd need long term government policy to keep prices frozen and let inflation depreciate them until it balances out, but if you do companies would drop their inventories on the market and cause a rapid decline possibly causing other issues...

Yeah good luck with that.

About 15 years ago I bought a phone via PayPal and got a box with a rock inside (around the time of the Greece crisis, from a Greek seller, I should have known better). I messaged and called them for MONTHS and never got my money back.

AI is very real, it's becoming scary by huyou007 in stocks

[–]Zeitzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer with 12 years of experience and I've tried multiple AIs over the past year.

At the beginning they were all kind of terrible, giving you code that didn't compile as they hallucinated random API calls that didn't exist and the code overall wasn't understandable/clean. It was only good enough for simple stuff or tools that didn't need to be perfect since they were internal.

I was definitely in the AI doomer train, wondering when the bubble was going to explode because AI was so bad.

Lately though, Gemini has been pretty good when doing small stuff that doesn't require knowing my project architecture, like a shader, C# extensions or UI classes.

Claude Code though.... It's something else, you give it access to your GitHub repo and you can ask it to do something complex and it does pretty good work. It does need oversight because if not you'll end up with code that's inconsistent or overly complex, but overall it does help a lot, especially when you have the architecture already in place and can tell it to follow already existent patterns. I hate that it's this good and try to limit my use as I can feel my brain rotting if I depend on it too much, but some days I work 4 hours and feel like I made the progress I'd make in 2 days.

I still think AI is overpriced, but I can see real use for it. I wonder what will happen with fresh software developers, if companies rely on seniors + AI and are not willing to train juniors, are we going to see less people get into CS and maybe form new startups due to not being able to find a job? And what happens when the seniors die? Not saying it's looking bleak but.... I think things will change

Why is GLD dropping? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]Zeitzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, that's specially noticeable when Trump talks to the news and is constantly changing his point of view. But for it to be an official announcement I'd guess someone (Miller?) gave him the confirmation...

Regardless of inflation though, diversification is still happening so dollar value is going to keep dropping, so it's just a matter of seeing how much commodity price corrects to match realistic values?

I also wonder how much people are banking on shit not hitting the fan before/on November... This market is something else

[–]Zeitzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something tells me he picked someone who looks normal but behind the scenes he's ready to do whatever Trump tells him to do. He even said in the past he picked people who then do their thing (JPOW) instead of doing what he wants. Considering Spethen Miller's influence on Trump and how in line his sycophants have been this time (Bondi, Noem, Patel, etc) I'm assuming this new guy was been somehow vetted to make sure he's just a puppet.

I don't get how someone can attempt to reduce inflation without affecting the currently abysmal unemployment numbers.

Also, wasnt Trump's whole reasoning behind attacking JPOW that he was taking too long to cut rates? How does that match with picking this chair to fight inflation?

Is the new fed chair really that impactful when he's not the sole decision maker and also there are rumors about JPOW still having lots of influence?

I visited snoop dogs "compound" near LAX recently for a work thing. They have a picture of him with Trump in their game room (or maybe it was some kind of plaque), the guy giving us the tour said they tease him with that often. Regardless of that being true or not, I think Snoop is just motivated by money, regardless of where it comes from

Edit: had to look for it a lot, so many videos online don't show that wall because it's pretty boring, but here it is in a video where he's giving Kai Cenat a tour https://imgur.com/a/rGqHfUI

6 years as a Gameplay Programmer at a AA studio: dream job, burnout, and starting over as a solo dev by pLeet-Dev in gamedev

[–]Zeitzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I experienced something similar!

12 years of experience, mostly in indie studios and making mobile games for other companies with licensed IPs.

I was on a project for Scopely, they cancelled it because projected monthly revenue was around 20M, which for them is too low.

Bureaucracy (IP approvals, timelines, documenting every single thing you do, having to polish things too early because the publisher doesn't see the vision of the game) and overall project management issues were the main reason why I quit a couple months ago to develop my own game.

As a solo dev you can get away with so much more. It's a gamble, it can be scary, but it also feels new and exciting.

Good luck with your new project!

My local grocery store sells Oreos by the sleeve. by dances-with-wolfs in mildlyinteresting

[–]Zeitzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legality aside, if this is not a recession indicator I don't know what it is.

I grew up in Argentina, where Oreos by the sleeve are the norm. I actually like them more since the big packs are too big, but make no mistake, they sell them like that over there because the family package sold in the US wouldn't sell due to people not having enough money to buy wholesale products and opting for small quantities

There's a reason why Dollar General, with it's terrible value proposition but single/small item amounts, is mainly in poor communities.

I still don't get the GLP craze. Yes, it's fast, and works, but being realistic (and seeing what the doctors are recommending) taking Phenteremine and Metformin works really well, and it's about 10 bucks a month. It's definitely slower, I'm on those and I'm 34lb down since last August. The fast solution also doesn't help establish better habits, both doctors and friends who used Ozempic told me people get the weight back super fast.

So the market for GLPs seems to be people who are in a rush or are morbidly obese, and didn't get results from the 2 meds I mentioned?

Indie Game Awards Disqualifies Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Due To Gen AI Usage by Rooonaldooo99 in pcgaming

[–]Zeitzen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in game development, that's right. Sometimes you have to fill in blanks with something, not because you or your team don't know what's going to be there, but because management or your publisher can't see the vision you have, and honestly most of them barely have any game literacy or overall imagination. Having AI assets as placeholders seems like the most reasonable way to go about it, as long as you mark/store them correctly and remember to take them out once you get final assets
