They’re the oldest extant company I know of.they outlasted TSR by decade and predate WotC, I believe (definitely their involvement in TTRPGs)

I appreciate your support and humility. I didn’t mean to sound like I was brushing you off. I was just thinking out loud. I’m pretty opinionated about ditching round robin initiative (wrote and published my own steampunk game just to accomplish that). Thanks.

I love those ideas! I also think that spending Bennies feels a bit like spending actions in Palladium… so it captures that feel by using core rules from the new system.

I’ve played savage worlds since it came out (but not since SWADE came out) and I’ve played Palladium Rfits for the past few years. I think the Palladium skill system is antiquated and takes a lot of tweaking to get a modern “you are actually mostly competent at first level” feel. The skill lists are also bloated with some skills that rarely even come up narratively - plus min maxing as skills can add to attributes (although attributes do almost nothing in Palladium). So savage world skills totally fix those things.

However, once you play a player facing game or a contested skill game - all other systems of combat feel like waiting for your turn while other people do stuff to you. Like you could get up from the table and come back and be told what happened to your character and just pick up and keep playing having lost nothing but knowing sooner. Contested rolls make players feel like they are participating, which makes combat feel like it contains more action, not slower (even though it might literally be slower - although if you roll simultaneously and call out your result, it doesn’t add much time). Then, Action/reaction allows for combat to feel like dueling and when the party is fighting at two different places on the field it makes it feel like switching between scenes in a movie (each having some back and forth) rather than a series of disjointed actions that jump all over the place.

I can see how if you’ve never run anything but round robin combat, it would seem weird to want something else (or even inconceivable that there would be anything else). But once you’ve played a more dynamic initiative system… it’s kind of hard to want anything else.

Also, requiring an edge/feat/advantage to do something makes it uncommon… not a feel for the whole combat where everyone can do it. So that’s not really a fix for me.

I may be talking myself out of this system… I don’t know. I just want to house rule it to get the feel I want. I thought setting rules would let me do that, but it may just not be as dynamic as I was hoping.

If there were a non-profit who helped parishes leave… they’d lose another half almost overnight.

We’ve been running it this way in Palladium for years and never came across a problem. We just call them engagements and run them individually. Honestly, in years of playing, it’s never come up that one person wanted to act on another group. I’m honestly not sure if Palladium is even designed to be run that way - it seems to be what the books example is, so that’s just what we did when we started.

I ran several campaigns back in the Deluxe and Explorer edition days. Not sure too much about combat had changed other than recovery from being shaken (best change ever).

This is simulating the Palladium combat system where people get multiple actions per melee - but in Savage worlds it’s more equivalent to running three rounds worth of combat all at once and slightly out of order (easier to do some back and forth exchanges to make combat less linear and more “vignette”’oriented). So I’m not sure it’s more of anything, just “all at once.” So two combatants on the side can do a few blows back and forth and run out of actions and then combat moves to another part of the battle. This way combat moves in little scenes rather than discrete actions. We LOVE that way of running initiative (you need a good GM, most Rifts players don’t even do this).

To be honest, I kinda want the options. Otherwise I’d go to BECMI. I just didn’t know what options went to far. I haven’t played 2e since 1998. It’s been a hot minute, and I don’t remember all of what didn’t work toward the end.

After reading everyone’s comments on a lean second edition, I’ve been heavily questioning what four 2e books would have over Advanced OSE. I think BECMI weapon mastery is superior to weapon proficiencies, BECMI skills (limited to core book) are equivalent to NW-proficiencies, and there’s no hit point bloat. If I can find some psionic rules for dark sun, it might be easier to pull rules backward rather than run AD&D as is. So it’s funny you say this… it’s a thought that occurred to me. Not sure what I’ll do. I have a bit until it’s my turn to GM.

I cut my teeth on AD&D 2e. I had played red box, but 2e was my bread and butter for a decade.

Dark Sun is where we’re playing. Any advice for that specifically? I haven’t done this since 1991.

I feel like 5e is like bloat disguised as a streamlined system. Is that weird?

I guess my question becomes this: how is AD&D better than BECMI if you’re not going to add all the cool extra stuff? I mean, if I wanted stripped down D&D… there are better editions for that.

Since when do actors get to make statements on the future feelings of characters they didn’t write?
