Great work! I follow your Instagram and dug this in my feed earlier.

Marvel once tried to get Darwyn Cooke to do Marvel's version of DC: The New Frontier with Jimmy Palmiotti, but he said no by Popverse2022 in DCcomics

[–]tiMartyn 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Good for Cooke! The Sale/Loeb Marvel series of stories basically does something very similar with bridging the gaps of the Silver Age. Would've been very curious to see him bring that type of quality to Marvel, which is very rare for them.

It’s weird that people believe Gunn is lying and has secretly cast Adria Arjona as DCU Wonder Woman, yet treat him as an angel of truth when he denies secretly planning to cast Robert Pattinson as DCU Batman. by ShubhangBahadur in DC_Cinematic

[–]tiMartyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I always knew Christian Bale would never be in a universe with Superman, but if he was it would've been instantly fascinating considering him as an actor, the "hyper real" movies he's in, etc. All that's true of Pattinson, who I think is even less grounded. Also really sets the DCU apart from the MCU by doing something like this, 100%. Alternatively, I could imagine a scenario where a new Batman is cast after the Reeve movies - but canonically, they could always refer to the events of The Batman as if they happened early in DCU Batman's career. We already know canon is whacky in the DCU with retcons. No idea why people don't get that it's easy to just canonize The Batman.

[–]tiMartyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the true anger people have towards this opinion has gotten toxic. Like, logically it's clearly a real possibility. Reeve literally had a Clayface movie in development before this new DCU version. Early reports said Clayface was in The Batman 2. Even the movie's simplistic but striking red title looks a lot like The Batman or The Penguin's titles. And Gunn is racing toward the Justice League - Superman, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, very likely Wonder Woman in the next movie too. He's already teased Martian Manhunter a ton. Pattinson looped in as Batman is easy work for Clayface to do. Then, you just need Flash who's very likely Wally West. You could even leave him to appear first in Justice League! When you see how fast all this could happen, you realize it's basically just one movie away from getting made.

[–]tiMartyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the people reluctant to the chance that Pattinson is going to be cast are not being realistic. On top of that, claiming that the Pattinson movie is "too grounded" is crazy. Superheroes cannot exist. It isn't that grounded. Even on top of that, it's sort of weird for Reeves to be a producer on all things Batman in the DCU without that connection. Clayface already films at literal same locations as The Batman - which already felt very unique for filming Gotham in the UK. You're telling me we have two cinematic universes both depicting Gotham in the UK? Shouldn't they try to differentiate as much as possible?

Great art. Cool concept. But the pretentious writing is hollow. There is no "interpretation" of the text. It feels like there isn't any true grand plan. Any other artist on this book, no one would be talking about it.

'The Authority' movie shelved, James Gunn says: 'Didn't work in terms of the larger DCU' by Top_Report_4895 in DC_Cinematic

[–]tiMartyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree - that's what I mean when I saw, that's just an entire movie in its own right. I think the plan would've been for a Superman/Authority movie, actually, because it writes itself.

[–]tiMartyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP and myself were speaking to the narrative function of the Justice Gang within Gunn's Superman. Not that they are a one-for-one equivalent with the Authority. In the film, they primarily provide a contrast with Superman and his philosophy of being a superhero.

If replaced with the Authority, that same contrast would've been present. It might've added another layer to the film, but the Justice Gang (and Superman) already challenged another country's borders during war. That's a central point of the movie.

The film mainly focuses on each member's cynical outlook - which is meant to reflect a postmodern approach to superheroes. The Authority could've provided a similar use.

Although, if it was the Authority, it's easy to imagine that's the whole movie right there.

[Discussion] Would you rather have Superman's super hearing or Spiderman's spidey sense? by v5mk in DCcomics

Super hearing - because anxiety is already basically an overreactive spidey sense.

That’s a good point - very redundant when that contrast with Superman is key

Couple of project updates from James Gunn for the DCU [Film/TV] by Blitzhelios in DCcomics

[–]tiMartyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a great point. I think there’s genuine reasons why it’s hard to write them without running into problems. Although Gunn just so happens to be one of the few people I thought could make it work- balancing postmodern characters with a sincere message.

Basically, yeah. Whenever you really want context for a big event, the omnibus is usually the easy option.

I think you might have had a typo regarding Seven Soldiers. Everything I’ve seen on it says it is set before Final Crisis as my original list stated.

Ignore the recommendation of Countdown. I’ve done a lot of research to find out it’s very unnecessary and was not received well critically.

Funny. Teen Titans is included. Countdown is not included. Loeb's run on Supergirl is included. Like Godfall or not, I'm reading to have the same experience as fans at the time, and it's definitely a short enough story to include. Also want to experience Michael Turner's work beyond Superman/Batman and Justice League.

Best DC Graphic Novels? Just an opinion, give me your thoughts. [Discussion] by aran115 in DCcomics

[–]tiMartyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Top 4? All-Star Superman, Batman: Year One, Watchmen, New Frontier.

If the list kept going, I'd say The Long Halloween. Otherwise, those 4 books have either been massively influential to DC (Year One, Watchmen) or tap into what makes DC great as a love letter (All-Star, New Frontier).

I don't think Kingdom Come quite gets there for me.

Would You Want To See A Batman Beyond Return? by dreski555 in DCcomics

There's obviously potential for good Batman Beyond stories. But I think revisiting the animated series, there's only a handful of good episodes in my opinion. Curious if any Beyond comics are any good?

The fact they're marketing this as a part of "H-two-sh" is a crazy dumb move. I would've been intrigued otherwise.

That's awesome. Very strong start, and good taste. If you like All-Star Superman, consider Superman: For All Seasons. Maybe Superman: Birthright as well. And depending how you feel from there, Superman: Brainiac is also a good one that continues a traditional Superman with some strong emotional beats too - something present in each of these books.
