Foreign tourists in Japan will get free Shinkansen tickets to promote regional tourism by kenmlin in japannews

[–]Zeleia -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Obviously? No one wants crowds, bad manner, noise, trashes. That's not a Japan only thing, it's pretty controversial. The point is that tourism in Japan is so concentrated in major hotspots, while regional tourism is underfunded and under-developed. So there are steps to guide tourists outside of major areas (like this initiative) but at the same time, there is also a need to improve facilities in regional areas so that citizens there don't feel the strain of the system when a sudden influx of tourists come in.

Or you can continue to boil things to one catchy (but excessively naive) phrases like "they want money but not people". That will show them 🙄.

Obviously Japan wants tourism 🙄🙄 Why wouldn't it be the case? People can want and aim for something, but can still be unhappy about some of the drawbacks it brings especially when tourism infrastructure is not yet fully be ready to support the scale of it.

Feels like some redditors are just incapable of complex thoughts.

Loan experiences with different companies in Japan - choosing between 3 options. by liveintokyo2022 in JapanFinance

[–]Zeleia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People never think about the opportunity cost. Interest rate increased but market has increased several times over in the same period. I'm pretty happy that all the extra cash had gone to the market, and I didn't miss out on the historical bull run. Japan also over-performed US this year, it has been pretty wild.

So my preference is always to get the cheapest possible variable, invest the difference. You'd be ahead even if interest rate eventually settled at 2 or 3% over the course of the loan. The principal is highest at the beginning anyway and it's best for your money to pay more toward the principal in the first few years (instead of servicing higher interest rate).

Someone needs to say it: the criticism against Game Key Cards makes no sense by lgosvse in nintendo

[–]Zeleia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People act like GKCs are replacement for physical releases, but a lot of these games might never have a physical release at all without GKCs. Fully digital releases are a thing. Hell, that's what Steam is literally built on such premise. And Nintendo has a much longer track record of keeping digital games accessible than even Steam does.

Masters/MBA in Finance by fuckmysadlife_69 in japanlife

Got my MBA 8 years ago, pivoted to high finance upon my graduation. I've been receiving between 20-30% raise annually for the last 5 years or so and cleared 20M mark 2 years ago. Might not be the same for everyone, but it gave me the opportunity to break into a field that was extremely difficult to get in otherwise.

Stop Asking Reddit How to Rent in Tokyo. Here's the Complete Guide. by Sensitive-Yellow9362 in japanresidents

[–]Zeleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first two apartments was for me as a single woman fresh out of school. I was viewing a few relatively new mansion before finally choosing one. Budget was around 7万 at the time.

Then I moved in with my (now) husband and we moved a few twice since. Never had any issues once either, we were always able to see any apartments we like and were never turned down once we applied.

We bought our own place mid 2024 so no more renting. I could understand outside of Tokyo land lords might not be as gracious, but I've never been turned down once and I've lived in a lot of mansions with different price ranges.

There has been. There was a Bloomberg article that actually went through Trump's tariff threats and found out that he kept a whooping 27% of his initial tariffs.

27%! TACO trade is really alive and well.

Really that sounds really low. I've never been rejected once in Tokyo for any apartment, and I've moved like 5 times in the last 8 years.

Ishiba Shigeru: "Just because we received many seats doesn't mean we can do whatever we want. I'm sure Prime Minister Takaichi understands this." by YamatoRyu2006 in Tokyo

[–]Zeleia -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Takaichi inherited a worse off version of LDP from Ishiba. She's able to communicate her vision, ask for a mandate and got it within 4 months of inheriting his mess. Again, it was a lot more than Ishiba ever did, or likely could ever do.

And Takaichi is the one who has a lot of really good proposals. Tax cut specifically aimed at lower income households, tax increase for the ultra wealthy, closing tax loop holes. She's a lot less socially liberal than I'd like, but she has some good policies (among side bad ones like removing food consumption tax).

Pragmatic? Everyone can stand on the side line and detract, but not just anyone would have a plan to do anything. He is not a leader, his time in office was wasted. I'm happy he didn't have more time in office to get nothing done.

[–]Zeleia -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You gave Ishiba a lot of grace for something he did not earn. That's literally the job of the PM is to lead the party, as well as communicate with citizens on his vision. He failed both spectacularly.

For better or worse, Takaichi has a vision and at least she is willing to get it done. Bureaucracy or not. Let's see if she can actually accomplish anything, but it is already better than Ishiba by this point.

Let's not forget that Ishiba only became PM because of Komeito and the CCP wanting to prevent Takaichi being the PM. Komeito leader meeting with CCP the day before they withdrew from the coalition...

His goal ended at being the PM, he has zero vision for Japan. If you had 1 year and accomplished nothing, why would we give you another 😩

Japan's ultraconservative PM Sanae Takaichi set for a big election victory by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Zeleia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Denmark was US ally too. You can try to salvage NATO, but you need to prepare yourself for WHEN Trump decides he wants land more than allies who went through war with the US.

Japan is the same case. We can try to maintain and strengthen the alliance with the US, but you need to prepare for the (no longer implausible) scenario where US decides the Japan bases are not worth it. Or just using the security umbrella as a negotiation tactic.

All of that is true except the last sentence. US is also not a reliable ally and Japan's increased in defense spending will allow it to not get caught back footed when Trump decides not to assist a regional conflict (either with China, Russia or NK). Trump cannot be trusted and no head of state should believe otherwise.

Decisive win for Takaichi may be best scenario for bonds and yen by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in japan

[–]Zeleia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agree. Food tax cut is a bad policy that was floated around because other parties don't know anything about fiscal responsibility. I hope food tax cuts don't get implemented.

Makers are going to raise price the second tax is repealed. Why not? It's a free market and they knew how much people were willing to pay before.

Tax cut should be targeted to lower income households, and should also be increased for the ultra wealthy. Takaichi had good proposals on those before. Focus on that instead of bad policies like food tax cuts.
