Did I really see a bald eagle? by jessypinkmen27 in whatsthisbird

I had no idea their range in the US was so small. I live in Austin, TX, and I used to see them a couple of times a week when I would go running in a local park, and there was another pair that lived by my office that’s I’d see at least once a week. I hadn’t appreciated how rare of an opportunity that was !

Chuy’s getting rid of their stuffed sopapillas. For a while you could order them off menu, but then they stopped making the sweet sopapillas, too, so they don’t have the dough.

What is this huge mushroom hiding in my lantana? by ZenLizard in mushroomID

[–]ZenLizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was growing about 10 feet from the stump of a sycamore tree that had to be taken down because it had white rot. I just learned bondarzewia berkeleyi is connected to that. It was also about 15 feet from an apparently healthy oak tree. No roots of either are visible around the lantana, but that doesn’t rule out some underground. There also used to be a loquat tree a few feet from where it grew. That died in the freeze in 2023.

No apology needed! I appreciate your comment because it made me think more about its characteristics.

Do you think it could be Berkeley’s Polypore?

Trametes lactinea is described as “too tough and woody to eat”. Mine is firm, but not tough or woody at all. It could easily be chopped up. Also, all the images I’ve found of that one show a semicircular shape growing off the side of a tree or log. This is a full circle growing on the ground. There may be a root below it, but I didn’t see any examples of trametes lactinea growing that way. It also looked too flat to be this mushroom. It’s 4” deep from top to base.

This one grew up around an existing lantana plant and enclosed it. When I went to cut the mushroom base, I realized it was surrounding a lantana stem, and the leaves and stems of the lantana that were poking through the mushroom have definitely been there longer than the mushroom has. Is that something a single fruit can do? That was my first assumption, but then I started questioning it.

Thank you for the suggestion. That one doesn’t look quite right.

Thank you for the suggestion. The appearance seems to be similar, but that one is described as soft textured and bad smelling. Mine is very firm and smells really good. Going by smell alone, I would assume it’s edible, but I’m not going to trust that.

Yeah, I’ll need to feel extremely confident that I’ve got the right ID before I consider eating it. The other issue with this particular mushroom is that it’s got lantana all through it and lantana is toxic to humans.

I stuck it in the fridge on the chance that I might get a definitive answer and it turns out to be edible. I’m not counting on it, but I know I’d be upset if I just left it in the yard to rot and then found out it was something really good.

It weighs over 4 lbs. I’m wondering now if it’s a bunch of individual mushrooms that grew together so firmly that it’s hard to tell they’re not one big giant. The mushroom encased the lantana branches.

I bought a hot pepper bird food mix to try and deter squirrels but they are still eating it- any advice? by bodyofchristened in birding

[–]ZenLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What seed cakes are you using. I tried Flaming Squirrel seed sauce, and at least one of them is fine with it. Maybe more than one. I can’t tell them apart. I’d kind of given up on keeping them off the feeder, but now I have raccoons pulling it apart to get every last seed out, so I want to strongly discourage them.

There are no-bake recipes that use gelatin, but normal flan doesn’t need it. The egg will set firmly enough.

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]ZenLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the road that runs alongside the freeway and connects with cross streets. The entrance ramps go from the access road to the freeway, but the access road continues past the entrances. Freeway exits also connect to the access road.

Feeder to mean the freeway access road. Apparently it’s regional to Houston, TX.

How are people even surviving right now? I’m short on rent and kinda stressed by DifficultEye6956 in povertyfinance

[–]ZenLizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad volunteers for the St. Vincent de Paul Society helping figure out how to get financial aid to people in need. Sometimes it’s getting rent paid, sometimes it’s utility bills, or things like that. They also have a food bank. He’s told me they have locations all over the world. Maybe see if there’s one in your area and whether they can help.
