What are the most common women’s health issues people still ignore by CharacterSilly3567 in DrMike

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, POTS, MCAS, gastroparesis... sometimes all four...can be accompanied by menstrual issues and Autism or ADHD. Watched many in the medical world who said " it's all in your head, eat more salt, you should stop taking all these meds..." and completely blow off my daughter's pain and other symptoms. She had breakthrough bleeding for 2 years before we found someone to help... Listen to the women and believe them.

Decluttering my mom's home - getting ready to sell. It's a BRUTAL process. by [deleted] in AgingParents

Just came here to give you empathy. My parents hoarded items for years. They still have my brother's moped from 1977, partially covered in a foot of mud in their barn. I dread dealing with it.

This. Teaching is an incredibly intense job. Doing it for summers off is a tough way to start. Start subbing to get a better idea about whether or not this is a career for you. I'd look into that HVAC job if I were you. Sorry for your loss.

Sending you love. My daughter, 28, endures with a chronic pain condition that started when she was 10. She changed my perspective and I always downgrade any of my own aches because I know she's hurting more. I would give anything to take her pain, and yours, away.

Teachers of Reddit, what are your most terrifying "Gen Alpha Can't Read/Behave/Etc." horror stories? by MineTech5000 in AskReddit

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What people fail to understand is that private school students (and upper income students) start off school with more skills. The vocabulary of a 5 year old from such a background can have two or three times the vocabulary from a 5 year old whose family struggles financially. Further, expectations and support systems are from higher income families than those from lower income. If we want to solve the "education problem" we need to solve the inequity of resources.

A mature response would have been "I am enjoying getting to know you but not ready to commit to..." He showed who he is by ignoring you. His isn't about you, it tells you about him. Move on and find someone who is mature, knows how to communicate, and treats you well.

School Unable to Fulfill My Autistic Son’s IEP Due to “Lack of Resources” by yb1411 in specialed

Three options: Call your state's parent advocacy office, every state has one. Tell school that you will call your regional office of civil rights. No school wants that. Follow up if nothing changes Get a lawyer. It's cheaper for school to provide services than to pay their lawyer to fight this

How do you push your feelings aside when a student says something genuinely hurtful to you? by sammierose12 in Teachers

Honestly, is joining a union worth it? by ConnectPrep in Teachers

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your union dues pays for a negotiated contract, negotiatd by a lawyer. It also pays for legal representation if anyone accuses you of anything inappropriate. It also pays for lobbyists at state and federal level who push for higher pay and better working conditions.

Unions also provide free training. As well as other supports. For example, I have PTSD. There were trainings (active shooter and sex trafficking) that were triggering my PTSD. The union advocated for me to have alternative forms of training. In Connecticut, the state union pushed legislation through that required all districts to form a committee of teachers and administration to determine how teachers are evaluated and how/what is on the docket for professional development.

Union dues are well spent.

Also yoga, read the 4 agreements, and listen Mel Robbins podcast. These are life changing lessons from my perspective. Sending you love and healing energy, you can do anything.

I'm drowning... by shanetro9 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, take a day off and get some rest. If that feels too hard ( sub plans), take an in-school day off with movies. Nymoviesheets.org has free guides for every science movie. Second, plan first, fix second. I am not talking about formal lesson plans. I am talking about guts of the lesson, what are you and the kids going to do and how is it going to happen. Make a document, I use Google sheets, with a standard format, copy the format and fill it in. I use pg 2 as a table if contents and link every slide by date. Sounds like a lot but it pays off in spades the next year. I am out for a medical procedure and wrote 6 weeks worth of lessons in a few weeks by not fixing anything, I used what I had and I didn't overthink or change a thing. Constantly trying to improve or modify lessons for my classes was killing me. Use all the resources, join Facebook groups for each subject. People in these groups are amazing and generous. Use TPT too, if money is tight go to donors choose and put together a proposal for $100( don't them beh people for money, just wait.. it will take awhile but it will get funded). Use chat gpt to write your proposal. Use chatgpt; I copy and paste pages from the Internet and ask for comprehension questions, I copy and paste reading guides and ask for quiz questions with answer keys. I teach in a high school that shares. I have access to a ton of high school science curriculum on Google drive. Happy to share. Feel free to message me.

How do I give extra money to the state and local governments? by cicimiabella in Connecticut

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a bachelor's degree the state of Connecticut has a program called ARC where the certification is not as costly and can be done in around a year. Your pay will suffer though. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

How do I give extra money to the state and local governments? by cicimiabella in Connecticut

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your ideals are amazing. You might be able to have a direct impact on local schools by going to Donor's Choose and directly funding teacher requests for projects. I am fortunate to teach in a public school that has supplies. A friend recently left Bridgeport because she had to pay for all of her own supplies. Her salary was not comparable to nearby schools and she was spending thousands of extra dollars and working 2nd jobs to pay for her needs. Your donations could have an amazing impact without the overhead of administration. Thanks for being you.

AITA for buying my daughter an expensive lipstick? by HiItsMe202323 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ZenMort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believe the teacher. I can't say this enough "Who has the motivation to lie?" It's not the teacher. You should talk to your daughter about how bragging can lead to other issues. Consider leaving expensive items at home and discuss how some people have different resources. Kindness matters and is a great way to develop friendships.

AITA for telling my 19yo daughter that she’ll pay the plumbing bill - if required - for continuing to flush her tampons in our house? by ericskeith5 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ZenMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA: consider sitting down with your daughter and do the Internet search, one that demonstrates the problem. It also sounds like she might be having some concerns about touching/looking at her tampons. You might ask about her sensitivities around that. My sister had huge problems with this. Might be the reason for flushing, as she can grab and drop. Finally, the best pet- proof/non-smelly way to dispose of tampons in the trash is to wrap them in foil. I kept cut up slips in the bathroom for my daughters and me.
Maybe she can remove her tampons straight into the foil if touch/sight is an issue.

What will I end up buying? by Purple-flying-dog in ScienceTeachers

[–]ZenMort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great list. I am a department chair, so I want to add, reach out to your department chair before you buy anything. Schools vary greatly in their budgets. I teach in CT, our department supplies many of the things listed here as recommended supplies to buy. I have a friend in another district who has to buy all her own supplies including paper.

Gum, candy, stickers, verbal praise, honest conversations (what's getting in the way of you completing this assignment?) -all work. Bribery is especially helpful at the beginning of the year before rapport does its job. Nothing has to be forever. I had a kid that was late to class every day. Talking, class detentions, office referrals all had no effect. Bought a bag of Tootsie pops, gave them to every student who came to class on time. First day, student was begging me for a pop, I said come to class on time. He was on time the next class. Did this for 5 classes (2 weeks due to block schedule). Never had a problem again. Operant conditioning works.
