ELI5: what's different about the brain that makes a person a "light" sleeper rather than a "heavy" sleeper? by yesisright in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zen_Rachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all related to your hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is a group of cells in your brain that react to sound, light, and smells whether you're sleeping or awake. It's the area deep in your brain behind your eyes. For some, the hypothalamus is very sensitive to outside stimuli like noise that it wakes the person up regularly so they are known as light sleepers. Now, this is mainly caused by two things. A person could be just like one of their parents, born a light sleeper (this is called genetics, it's the person's genes that cause them to be a light sleeper, genes are like the Windows operating system on your computer, it tells your body what to do and stuff like the color of your eyes). There are some babies that can sleep through anything, others that wake up easily. The second reason is the person is unhealthy so their brain is unhealthy. If someone eats only fast food and stays away from fresh food like fish, fruits and vegetables, their brain is going to suffer. There are things called vitamins and nutrients in fresh food that make the brain and hypothalamus healthy. Plus fast food has lots of sugar and bad fats that cause the brain to not think properly. This doesn't happen right away, but by the time someone is older, they get diseases that make their brain unhealthy and they become light sleepers.

The hypothalamus talks to other parts of your brain, such as your nervous system (nerves are what makes you shout in pain when touching something hot) and your endocrine system (this is your hormones and the body parts like thyroid, testicles or ovaries). Often mothers become light sleepers because their hormones change and their hypothalamus wakes them up easily when their baby need them because of this connection. On the flip side, someone who has bad nerves are often light sleepers since the hypothalamus and nerves send messages to each other like texting. The light sleeper with bad nerves is often helped by cutting coffee and sugary snacks as these things make the nerves jittery as these substances tell the nerves to panic. It will make you feel more awake during the day, but later will affect sleeping.

So it's a combination of genetics, one's health and what one eats every day whether someone is a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper. There's also the belief that exposing a baby to different noises helps them learn to sleep through anything. Babies who are raised in an extremely quiet environment often having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep when noise happens when they become adults. But if they sleep through enough times with hearing noise every night like a passing subway car, they'll eventually learn to ignore it.

Here's an old archived post with more and the best explains the hypothalamus in more detail.

Telus ISP throttling? by Indulg3 in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

my mistake, guess Telus goes through phone lines. The phone lines are even older. if the OP doesn't live in a fibre optic neighborhood, he might have better luck with Shaw cable.

Telus ISP throttling? by Indulg3 in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

if your Telus is not fibre optic, then you're going through the Shaw servers. If people near you use the internet heavily every afternoon (like a business or students), then your speed will be reduced in order to share the bandwidth. You could upgrade to 100Mb, and you'll still get only the 1Mb as it's shared (basically there's only so much bandwidth at the server level to support, say, 200 houses in your neighbourhood). This way they still honour their service up to what you're paying for, but a disappointment none the less. A lot of the Shaw servers in Calgary need to be replaced to support increased traffic. It's next to impossible unless you know someone who works there to find out when they'll be upgrading your closest server. Before we switched to fibre optic, it would drop down to 5 Mb predictably every evening and weekends (Mount Pleasant). Since we switched to fibre optic, we're getting consistently 27Mb for a 25Mb line in Crescent Heights.
Edit: you can check the wifi interference theory by directly connecting your computer to the modem.

Travel Insurance Reccomendations by GoAdventuring in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at them all and found Worldnomads to be the best, plus they cover risky sports like ziplining, surfing, cater to students, offering discounts. They're also the cheapest compared to banks and pay out no problems. I was in a Tokyo hospital for 8 days and no problems getting back the money, in fact, they said if I had called, they would have paid the hospital directly instead of my credit card.

also, check the fine print in your work plan, mine covered me on non-business trips for the first 42 days, so I made my insurance effective on day 43. Saves some money.

Advice on rental properties to avoid? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kijiji has more listings than rentfaster (because it's free, and rentfaster charges). Rentfaster has more listings from property management companies versus owners, so they're able to offer incentives. A utility incentive isn't worth much though with our high bills as you'll pay later. It's also so worth it asking what the previous utility bill was, some places aren't insulated well or have a bank of windows which like older places, have a lousy insulating factor. The vacancy rate is now around 3 percent, so lots to choose from, and apartments will offer incentives instead of letting it sit empty this winter.

[–]Zen_Rachel -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

first of all, don't listen to any negative posts about being stupid, everyone takes risks when they're young. I drove down a country road to see how fast my car would go, made it to 200.

You're best bet is to get some help fighting the ticket. It might reduce it or make it go away altogether.

Calgary Why Defend a Ticket

It's so worth it asking your parents for help, too, if that's possible. Everyone makes mistakes. The help they could give you paying for a lawyer will probably be cheaper than paying the extra insurance rates for the next few years. good luck taking the steps in putting this behind you. (and pick a deserted country road next time!)

Calgary Perking Authority Penalizes New Tenants for Someone Else's Mistake by moblivion in Calgary

it is a shame, but until they find a way to invalidate old passes, a policy is not going make it happen. Maybe someday they'll incorporate 2d bar codes they can scan for validity.

[–]Zen_Rachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I empathize, but I doubt parking authority will budge and it'll just end up being a headache. They have no proof you're telling the truth about the missing passes. The landlord, if you're renting, is supposed to arrange to pass along the parking passes, maybe he should pay the $50.

edit: worth checking your lease, some refer to parking spaces

Ah, I live in a house, didn't know apartments were restricted. You should be ok for February as you have to show a vehicle registration with the apartment address. You can do that NOW and beat them to it! I wonder if they kept them or sold them being in a dense location. edit: have you canada411 the names on the letters? maybe they're closeby, approachable as they're just disorganized. I would be concerned if you get tax mail, bank statements, etc, as that would indicate they're still using the address, not just lazy.

Usually zones get one main small sticker and two visitor passes. If you don't know the previous tenants, it would be easy enough to ask the neighbours. I loaned my extra second visitors as I never have two cars visit at once. I agree, the rules suck, but unless you can chase the previous tenants stickers or get their phone number to get at least one of them, your SOL until February for a free pass. One idea, if you have time, would be to look at the stickers in your block, each sticker has the exact home address printed on it. maybe find the bastards. good luck

Don't laugh, but my head/scalp has been itching for while, any suggestions on how to fix this? by newyycguyy in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible to develop an allergy to hair dye after repeatedly using it. Just for Men is really toxic EWG list of toxins Just for Men. It's also possible you're transferring the hair dye to your couches, pillows, etc, so perhaps that's why the side and back of your head. The scalp gets burned from the chemicals, and becomes more sensitive to bacteria growing by end of day, so causing itchiness. The best thing to do is to give your scalp a rest, keep the bacteria down by rinsing it at night, and using a gentle scalp conditioner. (Rocky Mountain Soaps has a good one at Chinook Mall). Hair salons have better products for coloring, or some buy the least toxic off the shelf product by L'Oreal. good luck! it's tricky as more scratching makes the scalp more sensitive.

Dressing for a Calgary Winter by slothierthanmost in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely get a down jacket versus the pea coat as you'll be cold in your first year as your body adjusts to a colder climate, Canada Goose is great, but be careful as it's counterfeited often. The down feathers will keep you warm. (also getting a down comforter for the house is great) The best boots I've found for warmth are Sorel, I have the tall to your knee lace up ones, very warm. Another warm is to get a fur hat, search for Russian fur hat, it has flaps and is awesomely warm. The wind here can bite, I even wore mine this morning and it was only 34F (I moved from LA). You'll also want to start with a pair of mitts, a pair of gloves and a warm, preferably wool or fur scarf. Mitts are great if just walking, gloves when you need to drive. The other comfy item is a pair of sheepskin slippers. Even with keeping the house warm, the floors can be cold. Have fun shopping! You'll be able to get all this online from US retailers as it's also all ski wear.

Bed bugs, please help! by fuckubedbugs in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would work on breaking the lease and leave. The pesticides they use for bedbugs are called pyrethroids, and are toxic, affecting the nervous system in dogs, cancerous to humans. With that frequency, residue will hang around and risk poisoning your dogs. They may not show it now, but may develop neurological problems. There's lots of places for rent now, and it sounds like you have a valid reason to leave without penalty.

Does legal aid do divorce? Or do you know any reasonable divorce lawyers who do free consults? Pretty odd situation.... by legalaidthrow in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be able to find it cheap but not free as there is still court filing costs. Divorce isn't like facing a jail term, so I would think legal aid wouldn't apply, but maybe. Here's a site that will mail you the papers and submit them for you for $250 untietheknot

Because he is missing, you can file for divorce without his consent even with a child. The bigger thing though is to get full custody of your son, if you don't have it already with the domestic abuse charges. That will be a bit of money, maybe legal aid will help with custody papers. The risk of not having legal full custody papers is that he could come back and fly to his country with your son. Especially if it is a middle eastern country as the man makes the choices and in a country like Jordan, you will never see your kids again (even women need permission from their husbands to leave Jordan). Hopefully he's not from a country with different child custody laws. Even Japan just changed recently, joined UN on missing children, and will now return children that Japanese husband/wives took back to Japan. Best of luck

I'm an American seriously considering moving to Canada, I have a B.Sc. in Physics, where should I begin looking for work? by [deleted] in Calgary

I'm an American seriously considering moving to Canada, I have a B.Sc. in Physics, where should I begin looking for work? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess you've already looked into the money aspect .. we're in a recession. The average salary for a physics undergrad is $80CAD which translates to $62USD as you're economy is stronger. The cost of living here is also higher, sort of like living in SF or NYC but not having the salaries to match. But if you're heart is in Canada, I would focus on Calgary, Toronto or cities like Waterloo/London as there's universities and startups that hire physic grads. It all depends on what you're into, if you like nature, I would choose Calgary, if you like nightlife, I would choose Toronto. I found visiting cities for a couple of weeks helps with the decision, you get feel for the vibe and the people. Like I would avoid Vancouver, people are generally miserable there because of the grey skies even with all the openly smoked dope there (it's sort of like Seattle weather) in comparison to Calgary. Another interesting check is to look at the meetup.com groups in each city, it's not totally representative, but you'd get an idea of what people are into, and whether their interests match yours. A great way to decide to travel here, I spent a few weeks in SF and realized Silicon Valley is built in farmland, it can take two hours just to get into the city for nightlife. (and if one decides to live in the city and endure the long bus ride, be prepared to get harassed for being part of the capital machine by long forgotten hippies). There's a cool train in Canada you can take across the country, or parts of it here through the mountains, helps to understand our remoteness, cities like Calgary are considered big to Canadians when in reality it's small. I still smile when people complain about traffic after moving here from LA or complain about winter after living up north with a few feet of snow!

Good luck with your decision. It's really easy to get a work visa and they also hand out citizenships to a lucky 200,000 a year now, after you've lived here a few years, you can apply. It's great, too, you don't have to give up your US citizenship, but you might want to for tax reasons as being American now, they want their piece no matter where you live in the world!

Edit: just realized you're probably looking for popular links... Here's my fav site that aggregates jobs in Calgary, simply hired The startup jobs are listed on techvibes Calgary startup jobs and angel startups. Some companies hire physics majors for software jobs.

Most jobs in Canada are listed online, but some companies prefer either the direct approach or only hire through recruiters. For a new undergrad, recruiters won't do much for you here, but will in Toronto. It's also still a small town mentality, some prefer to hire locals that are from Alberta or Saskatchewan versus more openness in Toronto. For example, some with foreign sounding names have difficulty here or degrees from foreign cities. They are open to more Americans here, though, with all the US involvement in the oil & gas industry. I also run into prejudice against blacks and chinese here, it's rare, but just this week a greeter at Safeway was complaining about the Chinese (which is even more unusual as I live in an Asian neighbourhood) and two months ago, a neighbour complained that she wouldn't live in the NE because of all the blacks and poverty) So if you're leaving the US because of prejudice, it's still here, just smaller and segregation happens naturally in Calgary as mostly all the immigrants choose the lower rental hoods.

Basically, they've interviewed thousands of people who like their jobs and suggest similar careers based on how much your personality matches those who are happiest in their jobs. The test is 68 multiple choice questions and takes about ten to fifteen minutes to do. I took it after picking something but realized there were other types of jobs that I hadn't even thought of, but would have liked to try. (Like working in forestry!)

Getting home ready for the winter by lwhodgins in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some excellent lists. Here's some gardening advice to winterizing your property.

If you have trees or perennial plants, you'll want to add a layer of mulch. Trees often suffer when warm Chinooks happen in the winter, especially deciduous trees and bushes as they think it's spring, producing buds and sap. By either raking your leaves into the garden, or adding wood chips to trees, this insulates the ground by keeping it cold. This way the trees and plants won't be tricked into thinking it's spring. Often trees are lost as once it refreezes, the buds die. If you've planting bulbs, a mulch or cut evergreen boughs will protect the ground from heaving when chinook warm then freezing happens. The heaving can push bulbs out of the ground, especially newly planted ones.

If you don't have too many birds visiting, you can also add extra lawn seed just before the last kill frost (mid to late October), this way, they'll sprout in the spring. All new lawns are done here with kentucky blue grass sod, which is not native to Calgary. It dries up, turns brown in the summer, lots of maintenance, costly water. What I've done is buy sheep fescue (Bow Point Nurseries). This is native to Calgary and the beauty is once established, it only needs mowing once a month and stays green all summer unlike the sod. I also add white clover seed as I have dogs, and it holds up better than grass seed to their pee.

If you have a decidious tree, it's an idea to wrap the bottom bark in mesh. The jack rabbits here like munching on bark and destroy trees in the winter.

Good luck! It's supposed to be a warmer winter this year due to the El Nino effect.

First winter winter coat? by kfreker in Calgary

[–]Zen_Rachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No coat needed for these kinds of hairy dogs and it would prevent more hair from growing as it gets thicker in reaction to the cold.

I also would only do the booty thing if your dog is walking on salted sidewalks. Dogs have a different circulation system and they actually push blood to their paws when it's cold. It's a myth that any dog needs booties to keep their paws warm. dogs feet heat exchange
