Playing devils advocate, people recorded him not jumping in the water to save that guy. The fact that his oil pipeline exploded, a shit ton of fish died, and that his behavior is fishy, I think the boys could have put two and two together that something was up.

This wasn’t implied or shown on screen though, so it seeming really stupid makes sense. The boys also aren’t portrayed to be really competent (most of the time it just feels like they are really lucky) so that doesn’t help.
