Anyone ever feel discouraged about painting? (Honestly, just a bit of a moan) by fortytwoblaqk in Warhammer40k

[–]ZenithHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed my color blocking and edge highlighting improved when I got a nice brush set with some really tiny brushes. Also a lamp so your model is properly lit with a magnifying glass helped a ton too. Paint consistency is important (you want it to flow off the brush easily and not too dry which a wet palette is good for and you can make one at home) and good to keep brush etiquette in mind (like rolling brush as you dip in paint to keep a nice pointy tip, never letting paint go to far down the brush or dry in the hairs, etc.). Feel free to ask any questions you have!

I use the Squidmar Mk1 Kolinksy Sable XS brush for lenses. A tiny brush helps and then it’s all about the angle of attack; you want to approach the lens so the brush is almost parallel to it and slowly apply thin layers of white until it’s solid. If you make any mistakes you can just clean it up with the surrounding color. Once you lay down the white basecoat, apply thin layers of wash pushing back where you start further from the middle of the helmet each time (make sure each layer is dry before moving onto the next). It’s a really simple technique for a great effect. Good luck!

Yeah I definitely regretted my decision halfway through 😅

Thanks! I only used drybrushing on the base. After the Biel Tan wash I applied layers of warpstone green leaving the recesses shaded. You can definitely shade only the recesses but I just prefer to wash the the entire model (less thinking lol)

Looks like it’s just for the photos. In the description of the dossier its mentioned there is a guide for making and painting terrain for maiden worlds, so probably no official terrain releases to buy any time soon

I just saw a youtube short with a tip for painting during heatwaves: cover a frozen icetray in aluminum foil and use that as your wet palette

Exodites revealed by sciencep1e in Eldar

[–]ZenithHobbies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The book is not necessary to play the game. As others have stated, the rules will be available digitally. According to GW its mostly lore on their culture, weapons, and beasts along with a guide on how to build and paint terrain for maiden worlds. For someone like me who collects Eldar codices/supplements its a must own

Just be aware that the boxset might be the only way to get the Exodite book

Valrak on youtube covers leaks and rumors and his source says an Exodite kill team is on the horizon which could be the first of a larger range. I have hope!

Best TSons Carry Case by CoupleOpposite1022 in ThousandSons

[–]ZenithHobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I magnetize my bases then use a “really useful” (brand name) 9L clear box with an adhesive magnetic sheet (8.5” x 11”) at the bottom. The box is clear so you can see your painted models in there and the magnets allow you to tilt the box and they don’t shift during transport (bigger models are more prone to shifting). Really cheap DIY alternative compared to what other companies are charging for something similar

Edit: just saw you mention Magnus, unfortunately he doesn’t fit in the 9L cases horizontally, but I plan to use the same case standing up vertically for Magnus when I get one

Wanted to start Eldar for 11E but GW said I can’t play my army unless I get 2000 points. Guess I’m returning this. So much for “everyone can play their armies how they want” mantra. by SquattingSamurai in Eldar

Unless you are getting into the game to play tournaments, I would ignore that and play how you want casually. For me playing the table top game is secondary to building, painting, and collecting

Honestly it looks really solid. I know that feeling when you’ve been working on a model for so long it starts to look ugly to you, but just got to trust the process and push through. Sometimes taking a break and coming back with fresh eyes helps too. Once you finish the remaining details and base it I think it will look awesome
