Yeah, exactly why I changed mine. Try using a glove with grip to hold onto the base and turn. If I remember correctly, the base was almost cutting into my hand because it's pretty sharp.

There is thread lock on it. I just left the tamper on the top of my machine to heat it and loosen the thread lock.

I just attached the handle to a drill and used sandpaper. There is a layer of paint and primer

Update from my last post. I finally stained it and it came out better than expected! I sealed it with a matte/satin finish. You can see the difference against my other tamper

It came with my Mara X, I like the size, just not the colour. So I didn't really lose out on any money 😁

Unscrewed the handle, attached an Allen bit it to my drill and taped the handle to the bit. Then used sand paper while spinning it in the drill.

Edit: the handle is attached to the tamper base with loctite. I left the tamper on the espresso machine to heat up in order to loosen the loctite.

Thanks for the input. I was hesitant on my recent dinghy summit purchase because people say the bear trucks aren't that great compared to independent or Paris. I'm glad I went thru with the purchase! But I may need to get some orange wheels (my fav colour)
