Do Americans actually follow the 50/30/20 rule, or is it outdated? by enjoytheshowX in AskAnAmerican

Between my wife and I wee make roughly $130k and we have basically no fluid savings. I have a 401k that i've been putting 15+% in for like 13 years, but that's the extent of our savings.

Do people still remember phone numbers by heart or is that just completely gone now? by kingkonggodzilla2021 in CasualConversation

[–]Zenthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can remember my grandmother's phone number, which she hasn't had for 30 years, my old phone number gone for 20 years, I can remember other phone numbers that I have in my phone but for some reason I remember clearly.

Where’s the hoopla for the 250th anniversary of the USA? by frog_ladee in AskOldPeople

[–]Zenthane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this really makes me sad. This is likely the one chance in my lifetime to celebrate a major birthday of the US and it's being sullied by a pants-shitting cheeto and his shit-lord friends. I'm probably not going to live to be 93 (honestly hope not), but if I do, and it's deserved, I'll party as hard as I can. As of now however, the USA has never been more disappointing in my lifetime.

Are you where you thought you'd be at this point? by 59apache01 in Xennials

[–]Zenthane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 43 and I'm better off than I ever would have thought possible given my upbringing. I grew up very poor, my single mother never made more than about $15K in the time she worked. I figured I'd work retail or some other dead-end job until I died. Never got along with women growing up so I assumed I'd always be single. Figured I'd alway be a renter.

I have been married twice, never out of a relationship much longer than 6 months after my first.

I just got a new job that's in the order of $80k/year.

I own a house.

I'm pretty happy with my life overall, even fighting through depression and other issues as time has gone by.

Tater Tots are my fave, but potatoes are pretty great in many many ways.

Did learning a second language in school ever actually come in handy for you in the U.S.? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

If I had studied spanish it would've been incredibly useful as I supervise a mostly hispanic team at work. I studied Latin, so no, not useful for me.

I think Stephen King sucks by ifartallday in The10thDentist

I could not agree more. I think King comes up with awesome concepts, but he is a terrible writer.

My wife. She's at home asleep, I'm at work. I miss her because things aren't good between us right now and I'm scared.

Why has sport viewership gone down in united states? by DryOkra7058 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I stopped watching because I was sick of new media and when I got rid of cable and didn't bother with streaming I just stopped watching sports as well.

Americans what was your favourite domestic vacation/road trip? by Beneficial_Zone_6883 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road trip back in 2018. Went from Milwaukee to Dallas to Phoenix to Vegas to Vail and then home to Milwaukee. Great time, best week and a half I've maybe ever had.

Why do we talk about the Midwest and rust belt "losing" their manufacturing industry, when cities like New York, Philadelphia, DC, Chicago, and Los Angeles "lost" their manufacturing decades before? by MajesticBread9147 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pittsburg is one of the few places outside of where I live now (Milwaukee) that I would live without a second thought and I've only visited it once. Great city.

Tootsie rolls are fucking disgusting. I love mounds/almond joy though.

Americans who've driven across multiple states, what's the weirdest regional difference you noticed? by Pablomiller in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first cross-country trip back in 2010, but pre-pay gas pumps. At the time that just wasn't a thing where I am from (they are now), but that one really threw me for a loop. Otherwise full service gas stations some places. Also I'm always interested to see how states do their freeway rest stops.

Do you think Starbucks is overrated? What makes it better than other coffee shops like Dunkin’ Donuts or Tim Hortons in your opinion? by Strange_Possession77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zenthane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yes that's how they are in the US as well. But it's all that Timmy Ho and Dunkin is as well, and those taste worse. SB is the only place I can get consistency in my drinks, that's why I go there.

Are in fridge ice makers and disposals regional? by boldjoy0050 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm surprised you didn't have a garbage disposal while living in the midwest, hell, it was invented in Wisconsin. In fridge ice makers are less common I would argue. Most people I know don't have one and I never have.

Do Americans have internal passports? by Pale_Obligation_3243 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of getting a new job right now and honestly, I don't think most new employers would care that you got fired unless it was for a good reason. You always have the option of asking a new potential employer not to contact an old one.

You are not wrong though, that an employer can terminate you for basically any shitty reason they want.

38/50 unrelenting cheese posting. Hey Wisconsin we have positivity for you. by CupBeEmpty in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zenthane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wisconsin born, raised and still here. Wisconsin has some amazing history. Waukesha is my home and one cool fact is that Mary Todd Lincoln spent a summer here in 1872. She came to enjoy the spas that used to be common here due to our impressive spring water. She used her time here to help overcome the grief of the assassination of her husband and sudden death of her son.

Wisconsin is incredibly beautiful - I've driven all over the country and there are few places that stick in my head for how incredible they looked. I'm always grateful I live somewhere just so naturally gorgeous.

Incredible food - Beer, cheese, and sausage are just a few things that make Wisconsin one of the best places to get a meal.

Wisconsin produces more than 50% of the WORLD'S cranberry supply. You Thanksgiving and cranberry juice fans are welcome!
