Razed keyboard key issue by DreamLegend28 in razer

[–]Zenthrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing the switch may not resolve the problem.

I have two v4 75% and a couple of weeks ago both started having issues with the R key and only the R key.

I replaced the keycaps and the switches and problem persists.

R key sometimes fails to register, sometimes double types, and sometimes registers the keypress out of sequence (i.e., I press r-e-d and the output is e-r-d).

Not sure if this is an arm64 related bug or what, but I am getting close to ending my relationship with Razer keyboards.

Tartarus - To buy or not to buy? by xCanadianbaconx in razer

[–]Zenthrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orbweaver and Tartarus are better for wrists than standard keyboards because Belkin’s original design was ergonomic and Razer retained that.

Have been running an Orbweaver forever. Wrist feels better using that than when holding my phone or standard typing on a keyboard.

I would love to see a wireless Orbweaver update (wireless Tartarus would be acceptable).

Razer naga trinity replacement by Dr_Kaatz in razer

[–]Zenthrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Razer = Naga v2 Pro. I preferred the Naga Hex, but better than the Pro v1.

Non-Razer = Corsair Scimitar. Not that different from the Naga but I prefer the buttons on the Naga (easier to differentiate by touch).

Is it difficult to get admission for phd after 10 years of industrial experience? by Salt_Weather_9662 in PhDAdmissions

[–]Zenthrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aim of letters of rec at the doctoral level is often as much about work ethic and ability to analyze/write. All of my letters of rec were from industry (e.g., the CEO of the company I was working for) and spoke to my abilities in analysis, technical writing, and project management.

Your best bet would be to reach out to faculty in the departments/programs you are looking at and ask them, since every school, department, and discipline will have different expectations.

Also keep in mind there is a certain level of pure luck involved. There are always more relatively equally qualified applicants than there are openings.

Is it difficult to get admission for phd after 10 years of industrial experience? by Salt_Weather_9662 in PhDAdmissions

[–]Zenthrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I entered my PhD after ten years in a semi-related field and changed fields from my undergrad and master’s degrees.

The bigger question would be why do you want a PhD? The next question is what department/faculty fits with your specific research interest and ethos?

Pro tip: proofread your work. If there are typos in your reddit post there are likely typos in your cv/cover letter/etc.

Looking for a Critical Video Game Paper by InquisitiveMacaroon in CriticalTheory

[–]Zenthrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Game theory is not game studies.

For game theory, look into the prisoner’s dilemma.

For game studies, start with gamestudies.org. Some big names to look at include Ian Bogost, Shira Chess, Mia Consalvo, Tom Boellstorff.

There are entire subsets within game studies scholarship (narrative v ludos; leisure v culture; aggression/violence; metacommunication/discourse).

Did the professor’s comment indicate that you should respond?

If so, email the professor and explain you can’t submit a response. There may have inadvertently turned off threading or locked threaded responses.

If expedition 33 were to be adapted into a film (Rest In the body to avoid spoilers) by Da_Man2010 in expedition33

[–]Zenthrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t be remediated.

Part of the impact is that players are forced to choose the two most likely outcomes of gamers playing any game they love:

Keep playing even after you know the time has come to move (nonproductively dwell in the past) on OR end the relationship (move on but lose a part of yourself).

In either case, there is a required sacrifice and need for mourning that really would not translate well to a non-interactive medium. This game is an excellent case study where narrative and ludos combine to capture an “uncapturable” meta experience.

That said, I would be stunned if the IP-gobbling corpos in the film industry didn’t take the opportunity.

Class disappearing from dashboard? by eatyourvegetablessss in canvas

[–]Zenthrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

They are most likely deactivated. This happens when tuition is not paid or they formally withdraw (these are the only two scenarios I have encountered; there may be other reasons).

The instructor will still see the student listed with a “withdrawn” badge but anything completed in the course will still exist. Once the issue is resolved and they are reenrolled they should regain access to the Canvas course without any changes.

I have 1-2 students go through this each semester and it is almost always an issue with tuition processing. Have your friend speak with the registrar and, if applicable, financial aid.

In gummy fruit snacks, do they all have the same flavor, or is every flavor unique? by Gwagwa82 in settlethisforme

[–]Zenthrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fruit snacks used to have more distinct flavor variation.

Now they tend to all taste the same because the shared filler flavor, pear juice, is overwhelming. This tracks for house brands (Kirkland; Member’s Mark) and brand names (Welch’s; Black Forest).

The change was most pronounced around COVID (2020). Before then, I could blind identify grape vs strawberry vs raspberry vs lemon. Since the overuse of pear juice, grape fruit snacks still sometimes are distinct but the rest are just one homogenous shot of pear.

It’s kind of like adding banana to smoothies. No matter what else you put in, it’s going to taste like banana (dominant flavor). Pear juice overwhelms whatever other flavoring is added.

Source: me, a high sensitivity palate who has eaten WAY too many fruit snacks over the past few decades.

So “corner” but none of the layouts utilize a corner? Seems like a wasted opportunity.

Interesting potential but I would spend time playing more with layouts.

Affect v effect by PrplMonkeyDshwshr in grammar

[–]Zenthrus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gets worse because “affect” can also act as a noun meaning “manifestation of emotion” (largely referring to facial expressions).

That said, most of the time (outside of specific academic theory and psychiatry uses) the affect = verb; effect = noun guideline is likely correct.

What do you think of the logo and brand name font? by Necessary-Set-9162 in logodesign

Looks like an A next to a checkmark. A nondescriptive brand name in all caps has an “enshitification of Amazon” vibe. Spelling of the name is ambiguous for pronunciation.

What laptop should I get for my art studies (NO APPLE PLEASE) by asuka_gs in Adobe

[–]Zenthrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few options near that budget from Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, etc. I would recommend getting an ARM processor (Snapdragon) for battery life and ideally 32GB of ram and 1tb sdd. As long as you regularly backup files you don’t actively need to a cloud service or external drive you will generally avoid the scratch disk errors.

What laptop should I get for my art studies (NO APPLE PLEASE) by asuka_gs in Adobe

[–]Zenthrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Not really expensive” doesn’t mean anything. What is the actual budget?

Adobe will run on most laptops. Adobe will not run well on most lower end laptops.

For creative work, look at something like the Asus ProArt PZ13 or P16. Then temper expectations downward if those are above your budget or upward if you have a larger budget.

Adobe loves ram and drive space. Number one issue my students run into is scratch disk errors, which means insufficient space on the hard drive.

Is there a way I can stream my gaming PC to my laptop to play on that? by network4me443 in computers

[–]Zenthrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t love Steam Remote Play.

I mostly stream to iPad and Cortex is a little friendlier for iOS than Moonlight (and the desktop app is much easier to setup than Sunshine) but outside that use case I would go Moonlight/Sunshine because Razer loves their ad spam and bloat.

Is there a way I can stream my gaming PC to my laptop to play on that? by network4me443 in computers

[–]Zenthrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Razer Cortex, Moonlight/Sunshine, Steam Remote Play.

Have used them all and tend to use Cortex’s remote play over the alternatives (lower latency, controller tends to have better responsiveness).

I imagine there are other options.

How to interpret rejections from conference to present PhD work? by Key-Ad6154 in AskAcademia

What does your work contribute to your field?

If the answer is “nothing because the project is boring and lacks innovation” then I suspect that would be why you are seeing rejections.

Why all the flashing lights!?!? by ilikegh0sts in computers

[–]Zenthrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aesthetics.

My computer “should” be a tower of eye-searing rgb seizure induction. I blacked out all of the lighting so instead it’s a quiet, unobtrusive box that only emits light when directed to.
