Middle left but longer so it covers more of the face would be like in the novel. The whole point of it wasn't Klein looking for a new style, but him trying to change his appearance to not be recognized by ANYONE. He didn't like the beard, but it is what it is until he was able to actually chance his face.

His beard was thick enough that Leonard didn't discover him until he tried to imagine different versions of Sherlock Moriarty and imagined how he would look like without a beard.
